View Full Version : our success hinges on #21

when you think about it (and even if you didn't) the largest single factor for THIS team having success has got to be the running game. we all know how bledsoe and co. in buffalo started out 0-4 last year. i at least believed the pick we would be receiving from them this year would be top 10. when their running game was able to get their job done, they took a serious run at a playoff spot, in a dog-eat-dog division and conference. and so much for a top 10 pick...
more to the point, if we lost Julius Jones to injury it could mean the season. we're pretty much locked in to who the starting QB will be, but a lot of folks think henson could step in and do as good a job. not so with julius' replacement. and i am pretty sure jerry and bill are as acutely aware of that as anyone.
we each have our own ideas what the biggest needs are for this team. i'm just saying i would much rather have a backup RB i feel somewhat comfortable with than some other positions i could name.
we all have to admit to believing bill parcells can find RBs. do not be shocked if we take kj harris in the 4th, or cedric houston or brandon jacobs in the 5th. whoever it is, we will draft a RB. no doubt in my mind. as insurance, it would be foolish not to. can we agree?
p.s. here's hoping julius stays healthy and puts up 1400!!!!!

I agree with you 100%. But I think a healthy Julius puts up 1600, if he doesn't miss any time.
yes sir, if julius stays healthy , katy bar the door!! 2000 yards is not out of the question. we do need a backup for insurance, but we can get one with those two number 6 picks we got.

I agree. If healthy the entire season, 1,600 yards is definitely attainable for Julius Jones. I love the kid.
But let's not forget about ReShard Lee as a backup. Very likely. But I also agree that somewhere in the draft we take a flyer on a RB.

How do you figure? So ReShard is off the team? ReShard will be given every opportunity to be the change of pace RB (backup).

When JJ went out early in the year, it was Eddie, Richie, and ReShard who were left to carry the load. Even with Old & Older in front of him, ReShard only had 27 carries all season. 27 carries all season!!! Let me put that into perspective for you. Vinny Testaverde, who from all accounts can be outrun by a turtle on ritalin, had only 6 carries less than Lee. ReShard wasn't good enough in Parcells eyes to even see 30 carries while Eddie "lightning bolt" George was burning down Texas Stadium with his 3.3 ypc average.
Now personally I would have no problem with Lee being given the chance to hold the position of JJ's primary backup. But it's not my call and Parcells hasn't exactly shown a whole lot of faith in the man yet.

I see the point of this thread for sure... but i think the real subject is... WE NEED TO GET A QUALITY #2... depth is everything... We need to go into the season with a viable #2 option that can still get the job done if called upon. especially since we still don't know how Julius will hold up over 16 games as the feature guy.

What makes you say this? They didn't give him that opportunity last year despite some decent runs.
Have they indicated they were going to rely on him more next yr?
I'll believe it when I see it.

JJ had a very good rookie year. But alot of his yardage came on delay/ draw plays. He had a little more trouble when teams started playing the draw and stacking the line.
Which is what you would expect, so I think having a passing game that make D's pay for stacking the line is just as important.
With Glenn back, KJ healthy and hopefully a improved line with Rivera (let's hope Adams & Allen come in shape and ready to play) hopefully we can be a lot more balanced.
I hope I am proved wrong, but I do not think JJ can with stand being a 25 - 30 carry back for a whole season.
Hopefully we can take the pressure off with a balanced attack and a number 2 runner who can be productive 5 -8 carries a game.

If they go into the season with Reshard lee as primary backup to Julius...then sorry to say but they are flat out stupid in that area.
Isn't there some oline sized rb who ran a 4.5 forty? I saw it on extremeskins, Id like to have him...

JJ had a very good rookie year. But alot of his yardage came on delay/ draw plays. He had a little more trouble when teams started playing the draw and stacking the line.I agree with this. The seahawks and bears games were mostly on draws. The saints took it away, and jj started having a clinton portisesque year (without denver). The giants game he seemed to really start to overcome our inept passing attack as we were running more conventional running plays.
With Glenn back, KJ healthy and hopefully a improved line with Rivera (let's hope Adams & Allen come in shape and ready to play) hopefully we can be a lot more balanced. I hope so.
I hope I am proved wrong, but I do not think JJ can with stand being a 25 - 30 carry back for a whole season. He did do it for half a season. But he is more of a 20-25 carry guy rather than a 25-30 carry guy.

Do you think they will?
Nope.
He may be on the team as a 3rd stringer, but I just can not see him being the primary backup.
I still contend that if not for Julius getting hurt at the beginning of last year, if not for Bickerstaff being hurt prior to the season...lee would have been on the practice squad at best.
The guy is a dime a dozen type player IMO.

Well to be fair I don't know if Bickerstaff is any better of a player, but it seemed like the staff were higher on him.
And morning back at you....uggghh...thanks for luring me into being part of the morning crew...I owe you one. ;)

No to Barron @ 11, if Brown is there at #20- maybe. I said in a thread over on the draft board - 4th or 5th rounders like eric shelton or kj haris might be good value- does any one know much about them?
BP...What are you doing with that thing under your username? "the cooler king". ?
Everytime I confront you about this you go hiding.

I think there may be a few backs worth having in round 4 or 5...couple names I like.
~ Marion Barber...he should be gone by then, BUT you never know with RB's
~ JJ Arrington
~Cedric Houston...this is a kid that could be very good...even a starter for many teams.
~ Kay-Jay Harris
~ T.A. McLendon
~ Anthony Davis....he may be small, but I really like him...always a threat.

Besides the obvious names like Shelton and so on....the Barber Kid interests me as well.
Must be noted about Kay Jay Harris...he has size and he has skills, but I do NOT think he has the toughness to be a Bill player as it seemed there were rumors around WVU that the coaches questioned his toughness and the idea that maybe he would milk an injury a little before finally getting back...Just a heads up to those who like him.
But when he is healthy, and in it to win it, then he is a monster.

Ideally if Barber last until our 4th rnd pic...wow...what a nice one two punch that would make. I watched this kid in a couple games over the past two years...each time his running ability stood out big time.
Don't know much about Shelton...other then we have shown some interest and he has great size...wonder if BP is thinking of him in a Ritchie roll, that can take some carries if JJ went down....

There were a couple of very big guys with good straight line speed but they couldn't cut worth a flip.

julius needs to stay healthy. but, while he is integral to team success, i'd rate protecting bledsoe and generating a good passrush slightly ahead of a big year from jones.
julius tearing it up will go a long way towards keeping the heat off of drew.
