This was taken from the new Scout's.con mock draft.
<<One rumor that is picking up speed has the 49ers dealing this pick in exchange for Chargers QB Philip Rivers. It might not come to fruition, but it certainly makes sense for both sides. The Chargers would then have three first-round picks and their starting quarterback of the future in Drew Brees. The 49ers, on the other hand, would get a better quarterback prospect than they could find in this draft, as Rivers grades out considerably higher than Rodgers and Alex Smith (Utah). >>
If that happens, our opening day game just got alittle tougher. 3 #1's!!!

I just heard that on the sporting news radio update. I wouldn't blame SF for doing that trade.

That would be a win win for both teams.

But the #1 pick, I think SF get the #12 or give them their 2nd. The #1 pick for drew Brees, lol, going to SF with no targets would be a disaster for SF... then SD would grab MW first if it did happen....

They have the cap space to do it...then they would draft Spears...two starters to an already good young team. Scary...

Man, I wonder what kind of reaction it would have on the draft board?

that would be a coup for both teams IMO, Rivers is way better than either of the QBs in this draft. San Diego would rule this draft.
I don't think the 69ers will get a better offer for their #1, not in this draft.
The biggest problem for the Bolts will be when Brees goes back to sucking after they trade Rivers.

I'm with ya on the Brees thing...he will go back to being average this year IMO...with now excuses either. Imagine if you had Edwards, Gates, LT...there are no excuses in the world for him.

I'll throw in with you here as well, they should watch Brees for 1 more year,,, make sure it's not a trick!

Still, the #1 overall for Rivers seems like too much. Where is SD's actual 1st rd pick?

Trading Rivers is probably one hell of a cap hit.

they have the Giant's pick right behind us at #12 and then I think they are in the 20s with their own pick.
Imagine though if this trade goes through how many extra players San Diego will get in exchange for two guys who never played a down for them....Rivers and Manning. (I don't think Rivers got any snaps during the regular season anyway) That's what I call making the most of your picks.

SD will not trade Rivers....Because Brees had one real good year I think they have to wait if he has another year like last season then I think you gotta trade one of them but which one. Rivers has a long term deal and Brees doesn't

this trade makes too much sense to happen- the cap hit on san diego would be huge but they do have the room this year to absorb it-
Chargers could come away with Edwards, Barron and rogers in the first round- wow

This would be great for San Fran. To think they wouldnt have to dish out any signing bonus. So in the future in Rivers were to stink up the place they could cut him with no acceleratted cap hit.

The Chargers were around 11.1mil under the cap on march 4 if they trade Rivers they will have a cap hit of around 9mil (according to scout.com) I think it would be around 11mil
He signed a 7yr contract with a signing bonus of 14.2mil because the CBA I don't know if it was prorated over the entire 7yrs is so the hit would be around 12mil but if they did it over 5 it would be closer to 11mil granted some of the 14.2 is prob. roster bonuses so the 9-10mil would be correct, but I still don't think thats a cap hit they would want to take on the other hand trading Brees would free up over 7mil in cap space which I think is more of an option......

I actually like Alex Smith better as a prospect. Rivers doesn't have the strongest arm and his funky side arm delivery might concern me a bit if I were a 9'er fan. But I guess he doesn't need to have the strongest arm running the WC offense.
If this trade happens, SD could be bad *** in a year or two...

I like this trade for both teams... although if I was the niners I'd try to get a day-one pick in the transaction as well.
I don't know why everyone thinks Brees is going to get worse next year.
That's crazy. All evidence points to him improving.
Especially if they can add a guy like Edwards or Williams for him to throw to. He'd have arguably the best RB and TE in the league... and would be adding an immediate impact WR. They have Mccardell, who is a solid #2. That offense would be stacked! Plus if they can add a OL with the twelve pick.

I'm not so sure about the trade myself. The cap hit is one thing but I'm not convinced Rivers is better than Smith or Rogers.
I still think the Niners are fishing for a trade to move down, still secure one of the QB's and gain a few picks.

Trading Rivers is probably one hell of a cap hit.Precisely why this is probably nothing more than a rumor.
