Tight end Martellus Bennett ready to test free agent market
Clarence Hill
Tight end Martellus Bennett is among 20 Cowboys who will be free agents in the offseason.
It’s safe to say he can’t wait to test the market in hopes of finding an opportunity to be a starter in NFL. He has been a disappointing backup for Pro Bowler Jason Witten since being picked in the second round of the 2008 draft out of Texas A&M.
“I feel I want to see what is available on the market,” Bennett said. “I feel like I am a guy that can start for a lot of teams in the NFL. That’s what I want to do. I don't want to be behind a Hall of Famer all of my career.”

Hall of Famer---Thanks for the chuckle Bennet
He said he doesn't want to be behind one his whole career. You really don't think Witten is a future Hall of Famer?

Another prime example of Dallas trimming the fat. He needs to go, he has the wrong mentality and is not what Dallas needs if this thing is going to get turned around.

On draft day when the Cowboys were discussing Bennett and their second round pick, Jerry was told the coaches would have to keep their "foot on his throat" and Jerry still picked him. You knew things were going to go downhill from there.
Throw in Pac Man, Tank, Owens, RW and you can start to see why things eroded so quickly. We're in deeper trouble than people realize.

What a waste of resources.
Draft a guy in the 2nd, turn around and trade him for a sack of used enema kits and then draft a guy in the 2nd round to replace the guy you just traded.
And then.......turning down a 1st rounder to keep a guy who is basically going to bail to the highest bidder and never did a thing while in town.
Just a series of ridiculously stupid moves for a #2 TE.

Might as well line up an extra offensive tackle as an eligible tight end, and ditch the entitlement, mental lapses and attitude.

I'm ready to see him gone. He thinks that it's the Cowboys fault that he's not a football star. His brother is always on Twitter complaining that the Cowboys have wasted 4 years of his life. Don't let the door hit ya Martellus.

And he complained that it was all Texas A&M's fault when he underperformed there as well. I've followed Bennett ever since played high school in Texas ... you begin to see reoccurring patterns.

If Bennett is let go, the team will need to replace him. Two TE sets are a big part of the Dallas offense.
Witten isn't getting any younger.
No one wants to think about it now, given all of the other team needs, but it would make sense to draft Witten's eventual replacement this year.

I appreciate his blocking but since that's pretty much all he brings I do have faith that they can find a run blocking TE to replace him. It's not exactly as if Bennett was the leagues best ever blocking TE or anything.

Good freakin bye and don't come back.
Pretty soon, this will be a position of need too. Witten's skills will surely start to diminish, and let's face it..... he doesn't have the same athleticism that the new breed of TE has now. We're going to need to adjust within 3 years IMO. Maybe even sooner.

Yes, a lot of people defended this move because Bennett was the second coming "Antonio Gates".

He thinks he is Antonio Gates. He blames the Cowboys for holding him back. When he is not the breakout star with another team, he will start the blame game all over again. His brother came right out and said that his bro is as good as Finley and many others. He said in Dallas, there's only room for one TE.

Actually, his attitude and effort has been great this year.
His exection was not, as evidence by his drops (into defender's hands).
Any prospective team that judges his effort and attitude by his contract year is going to be as big of a sucker as Jerry when he fell in love with him during the draft process.

I know I shouldn't put stock into a photo in which I have no context, but the DMN had 10 photos of Cowboys getting off the plane and one had a player laughing.
Guess who it was.
He's one of those athletes that drives me nuts in that he's had the world handed to him through Jr. High, High School, College and now the Pros simply because he was blessed with great genetics.
To me, I see a guy who won't pay the price to live up to the privilege of being a pro athlete.
And I'm still sick that the Cowboys "brain trust" deemed him to be better than Jermichael Finley. As always, Packers find a stud and we find a dud.

Not surprised. He doesn't want to be here. He couldn't wait to tell reporters that he's ready to hit the market. I think he's happy. He doesn't care that the Cowboys lost.

And there's the rub.
Had he been as devoted to getting better as he was to social media, Cowboys fans would've loved him.
As it is, he's another wasted, high draft pick.

He does give a ****.
He's looking for a paycheck and that's it.
He still thinks he can dominate by showing up because that's all he's ever known.
I honestly cannot wait until he's gone. The only thing that made him tolerable this year was that he shut his mouth in terms of the media, or at least I didn't see nearly as much of it.

I hope we can retain him. He is a valued starter because he is great at what he does. If he leaves that is just one more player to replace. We will already be challenged to replace so many why create another?
Yes Marty is a knucklehead and likely won't ever be a big part of the passing game (too far down the target list) but we would be better served if he remained a Cowboy.

Blocking TE's aren't that hard to find. Most teams find them in the late rounds and don't to spend 2nd round picks on them. Many teams find some that don't let balls clank off their hands into defenders arms when they do get pass targets.
I would be much more interested in finding a 2nd TE who could contribute in the passing game than I would be as a blocker. The offenses in the NFL that I admire don't employe a strict 2nd one dimensional blocking TE unless they're in goalline packages and then they just use an extra offensive linemen.

Dominate? At no point in his career has Bennett dominated anything.
The fact that we were in a rush to draft the dude doesn't mean he was dominant, he barely did a thing in college. A&M's offense was trash, and because Bennett can dunk a basketball and Antonio Gates exists, the scouts thought he was a diamond amongst the trash.
You guys want to act like Bennett was some superstar coming out of college and then never lived up to the hype but there was no hype and there was no superstar.
Just an athletic player with size and hips, there are a handfull of those every year. You want to be mad at someone? Look no further than the people that drafted him.

4 years in the league and in a contract year with "great attitude and effort" he has been less than underwhelming
so then, this is his ceiling pretty much

Cowboys better make damn sure they get another one who can block like him. People around this parts forgot how long it took the Cowboys, and how many back ups they went through, before Bennett was drafted to find that type of TE.
I'm not suggesting that the Cowboys should overpay him, and it's correct from his part to try to find a better situation, but the little slide remarks are just signs of ignorance.

2002: Raiders - Doug Jolley
2003: Texans - Bennie Joppru, Raiders - Teyo Johnson
2004: Titans - Ben Troupe, Chiefs - Kris Wilson
2006: Rams - Joe Klopfenstein, Broncos - Tony Scheffler
2008: Redskins - Fred Davis
2009: Broncos - Richard Quinn
2011: Rams - Lance Kendricks
Even without the Cowboys' picks, that still averages roughly 1 per year.
and before anybody points at Fred Davis stats, know this: he would still be a blocking TE today had Chris Cooley not gone down with his plethora of injuries. Good thing for the Deadskins that Davis was available to take over without missing much of a beat, which was the same, exact, thinking that the Cowboys used when they drafted first Anthony Fasano and then when he didn't worked out, Marty Bennett. Had Jason gone down a long period of time for whatever reason, there wouldn't have been anybody who could have come close to him without Bennett.
