Cowboys backup quarterback Jon Kitna has informed club officials that he intends to retire.
The 39-year-old Kitna, who has been Tony Romo's backup the last three seasons, was placed on injured reserve Dec. 14 because of a lingering back injury. He had been inactive for the previous four games with the back injury before being placed on injured reserve.
When approached late in the season about the status of his injury and what it would mean to his career, Kitna politely declined to comment.
Kitna retiring leaves a roster position open at quarterback for the Cowboys. Third-string quarterback Stephen McGee served as the team's backup when Kitna was sidelined because of his back injury. McGee will be entering the last year of his contract in 2012. The Cowboys will have to decide between letting McGee back up Romo next season or perhaps adding a veteran free agent who could handle the job. The Cowboys also could use April's draft to select a quarterback to develop for the future.

McGee is not a reliable backup. We need a veteran QB.

McGee is about as reliable as any other backup QB. What exactly are you expecting to get out of a second string QB. The days of Steve Young, etc are over in the NFL. You're backup Qb's are going to be serviceable at best and McGee is that and maybe a little more with time. In the two games he has had significant playing time he hasn't been bad at all. That's all you can ask for as a back up.

I agree with you. Keep McGee give him the additional reps in camp that the backup gets. If they feel the need to grab a QB late in the draft or an UDFA fine but Cowboys need to focus on some other areas this season.

I had never really liked Kitna before last season, but the man came through for this team when they needed him. Hope he has a great life post-football

I appreciate Jon Kitna making me eat crow. I was so hard on the guy when Romo went down, and instead he was all I could have asked for in a backup QB.

why would he have any impact on salary cap this from the article
Kitna was in the last year of his contract. With his family remaining in Washington most of the season, he had been contemplating retiring.

No he didn't. The entire team pretty much turned it off after finding out the Giants won earlier that day. McGee was thrown into an unusual situation with no practice time under his belt. He didn't turn the ball over, he completed 24 passes and a TD pass. I don't know what signals he looked bad from that.

Kitna officially notified the team he is retiring.

All in all I thought he did a good job both on the field and off. He still had enough skill set yet without the ego and I believe Tony is better off for us having him on the team when he was out.
The question begs...now what?
Enjoy your retirement John.

McGee is not a reliable backup. We need a veteran QB.
We suddenly happen to have about $2.7 million in the budget for that.

Not everyone can be a Staubach or Aikman.
For a nonStaubach or nonAikman kind of QB, Kitna certainly did alright for himself. He had an interesting and long career. And he was pretty darn good.

GB QB2 Flynn
Flynn wants a chance to start for someone and he won't be cheap. In terms of Ktna, his leadership will be missed and he gave his all for this team. 2010 showed us that a quality individual could step in, lead and have some success with this team. Good luck, Mr Kitna.
