Hi kristie. ;)

Probably because it's still the #1 show on Network TV. I saw something a few months that talked about how 70%+ of every episode of AI that has ever aired has been the number 1 rated show in its time slot. Whether you like it or not is completely irrelevant, clearly the country gets a kick out of it.

For the record, I watch but mostly because the little lady watches it. Starts the same every season, I don't care one bit about it, I'm messing around on my computer while it's on, but as the seasons drags on, I get more and more interested as I find the ones I really like. It's a disease!!

Is it the fact that it takes no talent ones self to enjoy it? That couldn't be it. Is it that all television is mindless garbage? That can't be it either -- or if it is, it's a terrible argument.

I'm curious if there's actually some logic behind the statement, because it's not apparent on its face.

It's simply my opinion. I understand that it is a minority one. I simply put no value to singing or music for that matter. Everyone I have observed talking about it have demonstrated themselves in the past to be near witless morons. People who can't answer even the most simple question about what should be common knowledge, can spout off endlessly about this trash.

My opinion is a little different than that of Cliffs. American Idol is the kind of show that requires ratings to do well and come back each and every year. I generally don't watch much TV anyway and have a special kind of hatred for shows like American Idol. Each and every year, they've got to do things just a little bit differently to keep your attention. I can't be bothered with shows that play up to the crowd for ratings. First of all, the show is scripted. You'd have to be completely stupid to not realize that. It tries to pass itself off as not being scripted when it is.

It's just not a pure show. For me, personally, that makes it mindless garbage.

Also, the show is produced, but not necessarily scripted. There is a clear distinction between the two terms, and the distinction does not mean there are not parts that are scripted. Also, all of Shakespeare's plays were scripted. Being scripted does not make it "mindless garbage."

I'm running into a common problem I have when I try to get people to explain their "hatred" for the show -- that being they typically don't have any logical reason for it. What I think is often the case is that people don't actually hate the show -- they just think it makes them appear more discerning or intelligent if they dislike something that is popular. It does not do such a thing -- rather, it only makes them look like a poser or psuedo-intellectual.

I like popular bands, so that can't be the case. American Idol isn't some special exception to this, because I dislike other shows for the same reasons. The WWE I dislike for the same reason, though it's obviously scripted and doesn't really try to hide it. I can't get in to the cheesy aspect of it. To me, that kind of thing is mindless garbage. But it's mindless garbage for me. If other people like the show I don't mean to imply they're mindless.

It's just not my kind of show. <- Probably should have said that instead.

Oh and I can think of another reason, the actual music. I can't recall much I've heard that fits my musical tastes really. If you're wondering how I would know, it's because I have to suffer through this when my GF watches it.

If you're wondering how I would know, it's because I have to suffer through this when my GF watches it.I don't think liking certain things that are popular rules out the "faux discerning listener" theory, but that doesn't really matter (I'm not being accusatory). I agree that saying "I don't like the show" would have made more sense than saying it's "mindless garbage" or expressing some sort of hatred for it.

There's some fluff to the show, but the vast majority of what airs is just a pure singing competition. And that in itself is not mindless, nor can I see a valid argument for it being "garbage." As for personal taste, I don't like the cheesy aspects of the show either, but they're not enough to ruin the show for me. And I don't always like the genre's they choose, but I have broad enough tastes that it doesn't generally bother me.

I admit I have to watch the show with my finger on the fast-forward button, though, because there's enough of the show that's vapid, mindless television to warrant the fast-forward button. Also, I never watch the results shows because it is 99.9% mindless fluff.

I don't regularly watch until after the auditions are over. Can't stand the train wrecks.

I think the show has about run its course. The Giants-49ers game drew over a 50 share of the audience, which is great. Fox tried to get ratings for Idol by running an episode after the game, but it only managed a 19 rating. However, it was repeated last night.

Speaking of Madonna, I heard this morning on a local radio station that she's been rude and obnoxious while rehearsing for the Super Bowl halftime show. She's been so difficult, that two sound guys got fed up with her, and walked off.

Speaking of Madonna, I heard this morning on a local radio station that she's been rude and obnoxious while rehearsing for the Super Bowl halftime show. She's been so difficult, that two sound guys got fed up with her, and walked off.

well i stopped being a fan of hers years ago so i'm not surprised by that.

The sadistic make-them-squirm-before-you-tell-them-whether-they-did-or-didn't-make-it thing, is not entertaining. It is overdone, stale and mean ... passive aggressive and tiresome, not at all suspenseful.

Lauren Grey is real good but she wasn't ready yet. She will be though. But the "Little Country Girl", I call her "Little Reba" is really good and is much more marketable right now. Got to remember Idol is about the entire package, not just the chops. With that said, I think unless America gets a brain cramp or one of them self implodes, two of the top five is going to be Reed Grim and Jen Hersch. They are both great vocalists and can entertain as well.

Oh and I think they bring back the Luther Vandross Clone.

I agree Lauren needs more seasning but I thought she was better than "Little Reba". I for one don't think she sounds like Reba but you are probably right that she's more marketable. She has a twang in her voice but isn't a good singer. She just yelled her way through the final song. I don't see her lasting very long.

I agree with Reed Grim and Jen Hersch. They are terrific. I also think they bring back the big guy but they may bring back the cowboy for the drama.

Meh, she wasn't going to make it very far anyway.

I was really hoping Deandre would get voted out but I believe the judges would have saved him. I don't understand all the love he gets. I can't stand to listen to him. Heejun could have easily gone too and I wouldn't have cared. I thought the bottom three were correct.

IMO - Colton, DeAndre, Erica, Elise, Heejun, and Phillip are/were the bottom 6.

All of them will end up going home before the final show ... the only "suspense" left is the order in which they go home.

i know. i didn't think it was fair. i thought hollie's version of this song was better then the one danny gokey did during season 8. even carrie underwood herself tweeted hollie last night, praising her on what a great job she did with the song.

So Heejun is gone. That's fine. But having Skylar in the bottom three is insane. Deandre needs to get the heck off my TV. His voice is annoying and his hair flips are getting very old, very fast.

I think Colton is one of the best singers. Of the ones left I think the top three would be Colton, Skylar and Jessica. I like Phillip Phillips as well but don't know how long he can go with the audience who votes.

I don't get the love for Skylar and her onstage seizures. I think she's terrible.

I agree with you about Deandre. I can't stand his voice but I think if he does get voted off soon the judges would use their save on him. For some reason they love him.

She has incredible range and can do things in in those ranges that no one else in this competition can. In addition she is not just a great signer but she is a fantastic performer. I have been to concerts where the artist just stood in one place and sang the songs. No feeling, no emotion and no interaction. For her young age she has everything to be the next big star.

I know the family of Colton Dixon (loosely) and have heard him sign live in the past. He has talent that he hasn't even tapped yet on the show. If he pushes himself to his talent level he will be amazing. His heart however is in doing worship music (Which is what I heard him do live) and he is totally into what he is doing. Jimmy Iovene last night was completely off his rocker when he said he shouldn't have gotten emotional.

Sometimes the so called "experts" aren't so expert on these things. Tommy Hilfiger got Erika Van Pelt voted off for changing her complete style while P2 basically gave Hilfiger the Hilfinger and went through with no issues.

Too much falsetto is off putting, IMO. Deandre needs to go.

Jessica still remains my favorite, but I hope she doesnt go the Hollie route and just sings ballads.

Okay, this will sound really weird but If Patsy Cline and Reba McIntyre had a kid, it would be Skylar from American Idol. She is fantastic. She really does have the whole package.

Tonight I liked Colton, Jessica and Skylar. Hollie was good as well.

Deandre needs to get off of my TV screen. He can take his hair flippin' act back to wherever it was he came from.

Elise can rock but I didn't think she did a GREAT job with the Foreigner song.

Joshua is okay but for me he is just so-so. He has great range in his voice but the tonality of his voice isn't my cup of tea.

P2 has some great performances then sometimes he has some very average ones. Tonight was average. Liked that he had his brother on stage but it was just okay.

If the World is a just place then the bottom three will be...

Elise
Deandre
Joshua

And Deandre finally goes home.

A lot of the AI voting is based on momentum, and not solely on the one performance. that may be the only thing that save Elise. She totally screwed up with her song selection, and her second choice (Hallelujah) was not a good one, either. She should have done something like "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benetar, "Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks, or maybe something by Heart. She is a rocker, and should not try to match ballads against Jessica, or even Hollie for that matter.

Bottom 3: DeAndre, Hollie, and Elise.

Elise absolutely killed it last week, and that may save her. I think Deandre goes home. He is not in the same league with Joshua, and Colton seems to be riding the swell of 12 year old girl votes.

Philip (probably the only CD I would buy when this is over) and Jessica are my top two overall (not just for the night).

here's the one thing i wish idol would do. you know how one of the voting methods on the voice is downloading your favorite contestant's songs & the sales from that go towards the contestants' vote total? i think idol should do that. what do you all think?

Phillip and Elise are two of the best singers. Jousha and Jessica are great but I don't get into cookie cutter singers. I have seen what they do 1000 times before. Hollie has been bad that is why the judges are hard on her. Colton and the rest aren't anything special. It is four person race, Phillip, Elise Joshua, and Jessica are the best.

Skyar has more range, better tonality and is more commercial ready than Elise or Joshua. Jessica needs A LOT of work on her stage presence and simply performing. She is a very good signer but there is much more to it than just standing there signing. And the BB Chez thing for someone in a signing competition is just so lame. She hasn't even developed her own persona as a performer yet and she is trying the (failed) Beyonce thing.
