IRVING, Texas -- As we continue our Fixing the Cowboys series (http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/category/_/name/2012-fixing-the-cowboys) this week, plenty of free-agent options are dancing in fans’ heads as they dream and scheme of ways to spend Jerry Jones’ money.

As executive vice president Stephen Jones said late last season, the Cowboys will be able to do whatever it is they want to do when free agency begins in March.

According to league figures, the Cowboys have $12.6 million in salary-cap room based off the 2011 cap of $120.375 million, and that includes the $28 million (or so) in dead money related to guys like Roy Williams (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5532/roy-williams), Leonard Davis (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2550/leonard-davis), Marc Colombo (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/3557/marc-colombo), Marion Barber (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8523/marion-barber), Andre Gurode (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/3565/andre-gurode) and Igor Olshansky (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5560/igor-olshansky) who were cut in 2011.

It wouldn't matter if we could spend as much as we wanted, there is a moron in charge of personnel.

We could have had Brian Waters at a bargain and that imbecile was fine with a bunch of rookies that couldn't play, Montrae Holland, and a broken down Kyle Kosier at OG.

And Waters made some ALL PRO teams this year.

PT Barnum strikes again.

Ding, ding. We have a winner.

I'm expecting no splash in FA. Couple of folks similar to Elam last year.

And Steven Jones didnt't fall far from the Jerry tree. His comment that we can do anything we need to do in free agency was a statement to deflect any discussion about the $28 mill in dead money and how that could limit us. We sure could $28 mill to fix this secondary and Oline huh Steven ?

Salary cap always has been and always will be a joke. It teams want a player they can get around the cap. Redskins have done it for years, they haven't won, but they have signed a ton of free agents.

Cowboys have become cheap when it comes to FA's. Why spend money, when you can put an 8-8 or 6-10 team on the field and still be one of the if not the highest grossing team.

Jerry cares about money....then winning.

I agree to a certain extent but the amount of dead cap space is really only relevant when one considers how much dead space other teams have. All teams have it, the question is just how much more do we have than they do.

Whats nice is that we're going to have some 20 mill this year, not counting Newman (assuming he's released) then free up 28 mill when those guys come off the books next year. We're really in a spot to add a bunch of nice pieces if we so choose.

30 other teams had a shot at Waters and failed to sign him.

Real easy to look at it now and rue.

We currently have 17 million in cap room if Austin restructures his contract like Romo did we'll have well over 20 million in cap room.

Most of the teams in the league had 2 starting Guards that couldn't possibly be upgraded from?

I'm not buying that.
