Anyone follow this so far? She has had major backlash from the medical community first for not saying anything for three years, but especially for the turning a profit from it by pharmaceutical company.
I think she deserves any hate she gets now.

The way the medical community and her peers even see it, she was being irresponsible by continuing without that disclosure. Even I am shocked that this many professionals abhor her now.

lol, that is a controversy? Weight Watcher can't very well hire a Anorexic spokes person. Why wouldn't a pharmaceutical company selling a diabetes drug hire a diabetic spokes person? Sounds obvious to me.
As for her not disclosing the type 2 diabetes. That's because it would have destroyed her career. Better her being a spokes person for a diabetic drug than keep selling those books full of death recipes.
Hopefully she will stop doing that now that she has another gig.

I think there are celebrities that did not make the death recipes that had diabetes, aside from Wilford Brimley. It is because she promoted the unhealthy lifestyle that it is under scrutiny.

That may be the way some people in the South eat but we grew up on a lot healthier food. I'm not saying we didn't eat fried pork chops once a week but we also ate a lot of beans and rice, fresh vegetables, chicken, etc...
So Paula may call what she makes Southern food but it doesn't represent what a lot of the cooking in the South is.

The term "death recipe" refers to the path it can lead too. Paula now has diabetes. 4 million people a year die from diabetes related causes and is the 7th leading cause of death in the US.
Her books are books of death recipes like it or not. They can lead to diabetes and diabetes kills a lot of people.
You want to eat it eat it. You want to smoke, smoke. A cigarette is still a cancer stick even if you don't like to call it that because you're a smoker.
My wife doesn't like to talk about "serious issues" that could happen do to someone's actions. It scares her, but I on the other hand do not beat around the bush about it. You can't mask death when it comes and there is no point is ignoring it or how it can come.

So what is the cry? Honesty in advertising or promotion? We have a better chance of passing gold bricks than that happening; all advertising contains a good measure of dishonesty and we're in no position anymore to complain about someone making a mint from being anything but completely honest. We've given it our blessings for years by remaining customers no matter who's selling what.

Oh I agree about moderation. I am a Texan and love lots of southern cooking. Chicken Fried Steak is one of my all time favorites. (of course, you really can't get that here in NY and that is good for me) Even in moderation though, it's still not good for you. You just won't get diabetes from eating a single bad thing a week. The problem is, most people don't just eat a single bad thing a week. Especially the people who actually buy Paula's cookbook.

Agreed. My mother is from Mississippi & is a great Southern cook... but she never made Krispy-Kreme burgers or deep fried lasagna or any of the other extreme things that Paula comes up with.
Type 2 diabetes primarily comes from carrying excess body fat (obesity), which her food is guilty of causing. So does other foods, of course, but her recipes are generally over the top.
I read that she hid her diabetes for over 3 years. The only reason it came out was that the drug/treatment company she now is a spokesman for approached her about altering some of her recipes to be 'diabetic friendly'. She responded, "how did you know I was diabetic?" And that is how the story got out. She didn't volunteer it, it just slipped out. Now, some in the media are demonizing her for hiding it while others are saying she is courageous for talking about it. Truth is, she is neither courageous nor is she a demon.
While I think it would have been responsible and admirable of her to have been forthcoming about her diagnosis & used her celebrity status to help others prevent themselves from falling into the same trap... I don't think its fair to be disappointed or shocked that she did not do this. Not everyone fits in the Superman outfit... (especially Paula ;) )

Actually, if a non-compliant diabetic ate this type of food everyday, then yes, it would kill you. I changed my entire eating habit in March 2011 when I was diagnosed. I became educated on what diabetes is, how it affects you and how to manage it without having to be on insulin, which I've thankfully avoided.
I think Dean missed a golden opportunity to capture a new audience by changing the show from a fat and lard based menu to one that teaches people how to eat responsibly and why they should do so.
We did some research about 7 months ago for our 3-county area in Texas, and 47% of the population was either overweight or obese. That, and heredity, are leading causes for people to get Type II diabetes.
Don't get me wrong about this. I enjoy eating. I've just learned how to do it responsibly and in a manner that will allow me to stick around a while longer.

I am diabetic. Sometimes, of a Saturday morning, on the rare occasion that my wife and I have the time, we sit in bed and watch Paula Dean on the cooking channel. I know and understand what I can eat and how certain foods and or styles of cooking effect me. I don't honestly need anybody to tell me that the Paula Dean show is an example of what I can not do in my life. I have a full understanding of that. Any Diabetic should. It is not as if the information is not out there for anybody to learn and understand.
Paula Dean owes nothing to me or any Diabetic. She also owes nothing to anybody else out there. You don't want to watch her show, don't watch. Paula Dean should be able to keep her health issues private . There is no debating that . I am sick of these people minding other people's business . Being from Mississippi , I am well aware that some of our cooking is unhealthy . I don't care . I eat fried foods daily . I drink Coke like there is no tomorrow . I smoke like a freight train . I salt all my food . IT'S MY BUSINESS .

If you use crushed raw garlic to season your food as it is cooking, it will put healthful compounds in your food that help fight diabetes and also slicken the blood so that blood clots don't form and so minimizing the possibility of a heart attack or stroke. Adds great flavor, and makes you feel good, too.
Lard is only unhealthy because of the way the hogs it comes from are raised in confinement farms where they never get outside. Diseases are rampant and have to be kept under control with heavy applications of antibiotics and they are given growth hormones to put on weight rapidly. All this and their diet results in their fat being high in omega-6 fatty acids and that leads to the health consequences associated with it.
However if the lard is made from pigs who live their live out in nature eating their natural diet and are not given any growth hormones then crowding diseases do not develop and the fat from those pigs is high in omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial and prevent the formation of the things that have given pork a bad name. Pastured pork is beneficial instead of harmful, as is the lard made from it.
Same with the butter made from milk from cows raised similarly and fed a straight diet of grains and they never get to eat grass, their natural food. I believe their milk is not healthy nor is the butter made from it while butter from pastured grass-fed dairy cows is beneficial because of the omega-33 and other things.
It is not so much the food that is making people sick but the ways it is raised and finished and processed. You can't get grass-fed or pastured pork or chicken in most stores and you have to Google to see if there are any sources near you.
Going back to the old ways of raising food will cure a lot of ills but not everyone can find it or afford it. The corporate food supply is the only option for most these days and that has dreadful long term consequences for individuals and society as well.
People just have to do the best they can these days.

Hey I love to eat. As though I need to cut down on my sugar and eat more veggies and fruits. But I love to cook though!
