One of the world's largest file-sharing sites was shut down Thursday, and its founder and several company executives were charged with violating piracy laws, federal prosecutors said.

An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart online piracy.

The Justice Department said in a statement said that Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and three other executives were arrested Thursday in New Zealand at the request of U.S. officials. Two other defendants are at large.

Megaupload was unique not only because of its massive size and the volume of downloaded content, but also because it had high-profile support from celebrities, musicians and other content producers who are most often the victims of copyright infringement and piracy. Before the website was taken down, it contained endorsements from Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Kanye West, among others.

Why is the govt doing private companies' bidding? Let them sue copyright violators in civil court.

Because lobbyists pays an ROI of 10 to 1 over other avenues of attack. Besides, why not pay someone in government to do something illegally for you since if you do it, you go to jail.

Because piracy is a crime, and the government prosecutes federal crimes.

No offense Otero but supporting this is outlandish. You have no idea the damage this group has done to legit businesses around the world the past 5 years or so.

This one cool thing doesn't excuse the consistent blatant violations this group is responsible for, nor the loss of millions and millions of regular joe's CC#'s and money around the world.

I think you need to do a bit more reading about Anon before pumping sunshine because you happen to agree with them in this one instance.

I think it's more about UMI taking down a MegaUpload video on YouTube that it didn't own the copyright to and basically saying they didn't care if they didn't own the copyright.

I've done a lot of research on Anonymous, and most of the research points to them being government funded and trained.

Just another False Flag by the elite's that run the world.

Probably because the nature of the "theft" crosses state lines and other boundaries. The curious thing is that copyright holders used to sue individual users on Napster and other P2P sites in civil court, winning big settlements to boot. Now the Feds do their dirty work for them.

the entire SOPA act to me is nothing more than power and control of the internet and very little to do with stopping piracy.

Validating the need for more oversight and control
Pretty much. Create wars with yourself so that others finally become convinced that there needs to be better protections in place. Oh how ever can we stop Anonymous from DDoS'ing us? Well, we need more control and better 'safeguards'.

Illuminati, New World Order, globalist-elitists, CFR, Bilderberg, call them what you want, but yes, they are the ones behind this... I'm glad to see so many of you here already recognize that our government has been overrun by a shadow government... Over the past decade plus, our government has basically declared war on the freedom and liberties of the American citizen, I personally find this very alarming...

This is the same group of people that were giving the orders to slander and/or marginalize Ron Paul on the major news networks, because Ron Paul is a danger to the status quo of this elitist oligarchy... Despite their best efforts, Ron Paul's campaign is still alive and kicking, and there's one reason why, the internet... But if we lived in a world where SOPA and PIPA are in full effect, then they would have been successful in killing Paul's campaign, because the web is the last place where information can be exchanged freely and unadulterated...

As for megaupload, that sucks... I really like megaupload! They were by far the most friendly for non-premium members to use....

If you dont want SOPA, I suggest you get smart and vote Ron Paul... Others may claim they're against it, but Ron Paul is one of the few that can actually be trusted...

RON PAUL IN 2012!

You know not what you speak of. Illuminati? lol. I'm not sure you even know the history of the Illuminati. Someone probably just *told you* it was them. (let me guess. A Ron Paul supporter told you this?) The original Illuminati does not exist anymore. (between current governments attempt to squash them and in-fighting, they destroyed themselves) Not only that, they didn't ever have much controlling influence. The groups that claim to be Illuminati today are just attempted copycats that have practically no influence more than you or I have. (just like the original Illuminati)

The closest thing to the Illuminati today would be the Bohemian Club. The sheer distaste that the Democrats and Republicans have for each other says that a "shadow government" of immense power is not possible. At some point, one would rat out another and the shadow would not longer exist.

Your Ron Paul commit (which I snipped out of quote above) is not allowed on this board.
