Special Cases

Montrae Holland - I like him as long as he can recover from his injury. Obviously signing Carl Nicks would be a dream, but I don't see it happening with the possibility of drafting DeCastro. Alternatives in free agency could be: Evan Mathis or Jake Scott. With the possibility of Arkin cracking the line, I don't see guard as a high priority in free agency.

Anthony Spencer - I've said that I don't think there is a better replacement through free agency or the draft. However, if he gets a big contract offer from somewhere else then we have to let him walk and we'll address the void in the draft.

Bradie James - Bring him back for a 1 year deal. He's a leader on defense, but with younger legs improving behind him, his time in Dallas is running out fast.

Mat McBriar - His injury is freaky, but he is one of the best punters in the league when healthy. If he can make a comeback, you have to re-sign him.

Abram Elam - Familiarity with Rob Ryan's scheme (and cost) will probably be the reason he comes back to another short term deal. Barry Church will probably see more snaps next year regardless. If they let him walk, I would like them to sign Michael Griffin, Mike Adams, Reggie Nelson, Brodney Pool, Chris Harris or Reggie Smith could be alternatives. Safety is definitely a position that has to be upgraded within the next year.

Martellus Bennett - I don't know what to think of him. They tried late in the season to implement him more into the offense with those TE screens, and it was mildly successful. We all know his knucklehead status and he's still 25 and really talented. If he could ever put it together, I hope it's with the Cowboys. One area I think we could improve with our tight ends is blocking. An option would be Joel Dreesen out of Houston.

Free Agents

Brandon Carr (CB, Chiefs) - Jerry makes up for missing on Nnamdi last year and signs the best unrestricted corner (I have Lardarius Webb as the highest rated). Carr would increase Jenkins effectiveness on #2 receivers and his presence would be felt across all aspects of the defense.

Dan Connor (ILB, Panthers) - It'd be nice to get some competition for the ILB job. I know Carolina doesn't run a 3-4, but he is good in coverage and might come on the cheap. Stephen Tulloch would be a dream come true as he's one of the best cover linebackers in the league, and our linebackers were picked on in pass coverage throughout the year.

William Gay (CB, Steelers) - When in slot coverage, he gave up 0 touchdowns during the regular season and a QB rating of 60.4. For comparison's sake, Orlando Scandrick gave up a 103.5 QB rating when covering the slot receiver. Coming from the Steelers is also a plus here. Richard Marshall would be ideal, but I think he'll get better offers elsewhere. Dimitri Patterson could be another guy the Cowboys target coming from the Browns.

Sione Pouha (NT, Jets) - The Cowboys need a condo in the middle of that 3-4. Cullen Jenkins was linked to us in the offseason and our defense up the middle could have used him this year. Pouha would allow Ratliff to go out to end on some snaps and would give him some rest during the game. Ideal would be Dontari Poe slipping to us, but it's not going to happen.

Michael Griffin (FS, Titans) - I said earlier that they might re-sign Elam, but if they don't, he would be a nice upgrade at safety. As a former lottery pick, I think he's got a lot left in the tank. Mike Adams would be another option (Cleveland guy), but at 31 years old, his best years are probably behind him.

Byron Leftwich (QB, Steelers) - Need a replacement for Kitna, and I have always liked the replacement job he does for Roethlisberger. Cowboys will give McGee one more year before they draft another QB project to replace Romo.

Draft

1st round (14) - David DeCastro, 6'4 313(OG, Stanford). I have been advocating this, and I don't think my opinion will waiver from this, barring injury of course. Doubling up after Smith last year would give us two great anchors on the offensive line for years to come and turn a weakness into a strength for the Cowboys.

2nd round (45) - Brandon Boykin, 5'9 181 (CB, Georgia). There's a lot of value at cornerback in this draft. I know Minnifield has been the popular pick here, so I wanted to go somewhere different. Played in the SEC, and shows great speed. Doesn't have ideal size, but he would be valuable in nickel and dime situations. Could also see him as a gunner on special teams.

3rd round (83) - Chandler Jones, 6'5 264 (DE, Syracuse). Physical freak in the mold of Jason Pierre Paul. Giants have made a living on rotating the defensive front, and Dallas could increase their effectiveness by doing the same. There's a good chance he shoots up the draft board after the combine, but at 83, this would be a great find! Was hurt most of the year.

4th round (113) - Tank Carder, 6'2 224 (LB, TCU). This guy can play. I saw him multiple times throughout the year, including once in person against Colorado State (his best game). He's seems to be around the ball every single play. High character guy that would fit right in with what Garret is trying to do with the team. I'm pulling for this guy no matter where he goes.

5th round (144) - Philip Blake, 6'2 320 (C, Baylor). In the middle of one of the best offenses in the country and the center position needs some in camp competition to get the best out of everyone.

6th round (175) - Bryce Harris, 6'6 300 (OT, Fresno State). Was on the offensive line when Ryan Matthews was there. Need depth on the offensive line, just trying to find gems late in the draft, lots of options here obviously.

7th round (206) - Jerrell Young, 6'0 210 (FS, South Florida). The Bulls seem to churn out great defensive talent. Safety depth is still a need for the Cowboys and it's time tha we start hitting on some of these late round picks. Blocked a field goal in the Shrine Game today as well.
