They have just about everything else needed to win it all. You put a Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson on that team and they win it all. Midgets are lucky they were stuck with Smith.
Love how they pounded on Manning. Its what we need to do.
They held the Giants to 17 points in regulation; more than good enough to win.

And watch out for us if we get a few players on D and the OL, and watch out for the Saints if they get a D, and watch out for the Jets if they get a QB and watch out for....whatever. Niners need WRs too actually. Plenty of teams are a few players away and QB is probably the hardest position to fill in the NFL. BTW, I don't mean to be a jerk here, I am just disgusted. We gave this division away with the AZ and first Giants loss (and numerous other blown 4th quarter leads). I am sitting here in NJ feeling sick after watching some punt returner single-handedly give the game away to the vagiants.
Who knows....they may improve...or they might regress .
Even if they draft another QB....it will be years before he makes his mark....and the 49er's will probably lose a bunch of players to FA
The teams that stick as contenders IMHO are the ones with Franchise QB's playing for them.
I hope the 49er's sign Alex Smith to a long 10 yr extention and then fall flat on their face.
I have no love for that organization or the team...or its fans.....I hate the Giants...but im glad they won yesterday.

What if Peyton manning goes there....Alex Smith free agent. Would they lose a game with manning and that d?

Watch out if we get an improved secondary, defensive line, Oline, QB, Coaches, GM...... Ah, nevermind.

can always count on at least one idiot to prove himself one.
Peyton Manning to the 49rs would be very interesting

Their front 7 makes their secondary look so much better than it is.
Bowman and Willis are probably the best pair of 3-4 ILBs in the game, and they can cover. The Smith Brothers are both great players with a high motor.
They can consistently get pressure and stop the run without walking extra men up in the box.
Allows them to drop guys and makes it difficult for you to stretch them vertically.
Eli got very lucky yesterday, he made some great throws and has played the best football of his career as of late, but he should've had at least 3-4 balls intercepted.
That defense constantly gave Alex Smith and co a chance, but outside of his great throws to Davis and a few scrambles, I thought he played very poor football, missed tons of throws, easy checkdowns that turned 3rd and 5 into 3rd and 10 on almost every drive late in the game.
Was a great game to wach, and hopefully Jerry doesn't think that because the Giants were 9-7 and we were 8-8, that we are in the same class at them, we aren't even in the same school. That team is built for the playoffs, we're built for November.

IF B Carter can live up to his billing, he along with S Lee and D Ware would form 3 very good LBs.
The problem is that we need talent on the DL (1 dominant DL) and we need 1 more good cover corner.
Not that we'll be a top 3 defense, but that could get us to a top 10 type defense. (We were ranked around 14 end of this season.) But who knows how this off-season will turn out.
But one thing is for sure. We can't trot out there with the exact same players and expect anything significantly different, imo.
Guys like Brooking and Newman, for example, are past their prime. As is B James. Coleman doesn't really offer much more than a run plugger at this stage. That's 4 guys right there. And we're not even getting into our depth issues on defense.

I posted a couple of times after the game last night that if Romo had the SF defense, we would still be playing.

By the time they get a good QB, some of the players will be gone.
Davis
Smith
Willis
Crabtree
I think were all top 10 picks, count the 3 OL they have drafted in the 1st round. That's a lot of 1st round talent that will be looking for pay days.
Each year is different. Next year, they could be 6-10.
Give Romo a defense and let's see what he can do. Hopefully they do it before he turns 35.

Smith plays exactly the way he should. They had 10 turnovers for the season. Smith is careful with the ball and they get good defense and special teams. Not saying Romo should play that way but he needs to manage the games better.
In fact if it wasn't for poor special teams yesterday they beat the Giants.

I think getting a legit WR is what the 9ers need. I think They will stick with Smith at QB but outside of TE Vernon Davis and Crabtree they do not have the weapons on the outside. I look for them to sure their WR core up before thinking about changing QB

They can get a WR in FA this year.
I think it would be awesome to see then 9ers find a way to get Luck. See if Harbaugh and him can continue what they had at Stanford. It would be very unlikely but would make for a hell of a movie if it all worked out.

Man, is their D ever impressive! They are fast, relentless and can tackle.
I really hope Carter is who we want him to be. Because we have a chance in this draft to get an ILB next to Lee and really shore up our D, but we most likely won't because we got Carter last year.

This is why you cant have such an optimistic person as your GM. He can be your owner but an optimistic GM looks at what is right and fails to see what is wrong. A GM needs to be like a doctor. A doctor has to identify the problem not necessarily look at all the organs in the body that are functioning properly. So what if your eyes are great if you have a diseased heart and liver. The bad heart and liver will kill you.
This is the reason we need a negative/realistic head coach to help see what Jerry wont. Jimmy Johnson was like that and so was Bill Parcells. A positive head coach like Switzer, Campo and Phillips just will not work with Jerry's eternal optimism. I just hope Garrett is realistic enough to see the disease that is taking over the body of this team.

......but remember: 10 of those 17 pts. came on a VERY short field due to a muffed punt and a fumble punt: doubt WIlliams of SF gets out of bed today: kinda feel sorry for the kid. ( yeah, I'm softening in my middle age)

49ers WRs had 1 reception for 3 yards in the game against the Giants.
They did lose the game, however, I think it provides an interesting counter-point that having WR rich offenses in the only way to win the NFL.

True. It isn't just the QB, though that is a big part of their problem. Alex Smith is just flat terrible at throwing the ball. I can't believe how non anything WR Crabtree is. It's like he is completely not on the field in any game.

Its embarrassing watching our D and then watching the Niners/Gints D. They are out of this world and we aren't even off the ground.
Pretty saddening and something I just don't understand. Blame JJ all you want but it goes way beyong Jones. The guys on this team are just not good enough to compete. Not all....but most. :(

They're actually my front runners for most disappointing team next year. They'll face a much harder schedule, they have a lot of UFAs this offseason that played critical roles on the team (Tramaine Brock, Ahmad Brooks, Blake Costanzo, Ted Ginn, Dashon Goldson, Tavares Gooden, Larry Grant, Joshua Morgan, Carlos Rogers, Alex Smith, C.J. Spillman, Adam Snyder.) and I think Alex Smith is fool's gold.

Has Smith ever had any success throwing to a WR in his 7 years in the NFL? Braylon Edwards was completely ineffective all year, and he had a 900 yard/7 TD season last year in NYJ with Sanchez throwing to him. I realize he's not working with Taylor and Rice, but you have quarterbacks like Brees and Romo and undrafted free agents and guys off the street just come in and produce for them as WRs.
Smith seems like a classic between the hash lines QB who can't (or won't) throw the sideline routes to his WRs. I guess it works when you have a defense as good as the 49ers were this year and run the ball as good as they have, but I question if that's going to cut it over the long haul.

A number of those players could help the Cowboys. Better your team, while weakening one of your chief opponents. I'd like to see them express interests in the bolded players here.

I'll never forget the fuss he made over not getting drafted even higher than he was. And then he held out in protest, wanting top 5 money!
The 49ers have drafted very lately, that was a horredous pick though.
Still, I do see him having an okay career before its over, just not relative to his draft slot.

Eli's a bumb. He played that game the same as he did the Washington game the only difference is that every time a 9er went to make the INT he got leveled by his own teammate :bang2:

I'm probably in the minority here, but I firmly believe they can win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith. He didn't play well yesterday, but neither did Eli. Really the difference was those two crucial fumbles by Williams. Overall Alex Smith had a terrific season and should definitely be the starter. One thing the 49ers need to do is upgrade their receiving core. You can't expect to win a SB with one legit receiving threat in Vernon Davis.

Will HArbaugh stick with a QB that cant throw an out route? Harbaugh knows its severly limiting his offense. But Kaepernick couldnt break into the lineup.

You are a dummie if you think Niners lost because of Smith. He had no one to throw the ball to except Vernon who was double teamed after his second TD.
Crabtree, Kyle Williams, Brett Swain? give me a freakenbreak
Rodgers didn't do **** against the Giants either. 260 yards 2 TDs 1 pick 1 fumble lost. Smith 200 yards 2 TDs 0 turnover.
Giants D also tore Romo a new one the two times that they played.
