Mobile, Alabama - Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has often said he enjoys coming to the Senior Bowl as much as any postseason activity. More than anything, it's an official start to the offseason as his coaches, scouts and front-office personnel gather here in Mobile, Ala., to get the first glimpse of the players participating in Saturday's annual all-star game.

But as excited as Jones was on Monday, it came on the heels of what he calls one of the toughest days of the year - watching the conference championship games. And for the last 17 seasons now, Jones hasn't been included in the NFC Championship Game. More than anything, watching the Giants outlast the 49ers didn't sit well with the Cowboys' owner, especially knowing his team was so close to knocking off the Giants and likely eliminating them from postseason contention.
"That's tough to take, watching those team play yesterday," Jones said. "We were glued watching both games. Really great ballgames. Always not a fun day from my perspective, watching those games."

Sounds like they'll be looking at either a C or G in free agency as well as secondary help.

That is a much better article than the others that have been posted.

The article should have said something along this lines.....

So how do the Cowboys improve and get to that level once again? Jones said "I have no clue"

I normally don't listen to the audio stuff, but this was the first time I did and I finally heard all the smacking that Jerry's known for doing.

One of these days, I might count up how much he does in an interview. lol

Maybe you can create a new drinking game. Take a shot for every Jerry smack!

The Cowboys are extremely top heavy at WR, because they have not seriously addressed the position in the draft, except for Dez Bryant. Consequently, Bryant is their most talented, best WR. Moreover, let's not forget where Robinson came from. The Cowboys were extremely lucky. I don't see how the Cowboys can justify drafting Josh Thomas (CB Buffalo) over Denarius Moore (WR Tennessee). Moore in the 5th round was nothing short of a ringer and big bargain.

The Giants, Saints, and Packers are loaded with quality depth at WR, because they draft them. The Eagles draft them. Those organizations get very good value and talent and depth at WR, because they are not afraid to use premium draft picks on them. WR has become the new CB. You can never have enough of them. The Cowboys really messed up with Roy Williams, and that one move has produced a barrage of significant negative consequences for the Cowboys.

If Robinson walks, the Cowboys should pursue the player that they should have drafted in 2007, Robert Meachem. This is a deep WR draft, so perhaps, they look to draft one.

A lot of scary quotes in there.

"Personnel won't be an issue next year. We like our base."

"No, we like Costa."

"Our front (seven) is one of the strengths of our team."

In relation to the salary cap, Jones said he's excited where his team stands heading into the offseason, especially since it was initially thought this would be a year in which the team would have to eat so much "dead money," which would handicap them in signing new players. Jones said that isn't the case.

"We've done an outstanding job. I give Stephen (Jones) a lot of credit," Jerry said of his son, the team's director of player personnel. "This is a year we thought it would be Armageddon for us - this year. But we were able to do some things with the cap that gives us a chance to have some room to improve this team this year. And we will use it."

What a joke. We were hamstrung with a bunch of dead money, signing old players to long contracts we shouldn't have but Stephen is doing a great job?

FWIW, Darren Woodson is on 103.3 right now and they're playing bits of the Jerry audio and then talking about it. Woody is always good, but he's usually on for one little segment. Today he's already been on for 15 minutes or so with more coming up.

What are his thoughts?

Cowboys headed in right direction or should we expect more of the same??

Among other things, he thought we were about a 7-9 team. Says we lack talent and as much as anything, we lack "dogs". Says players don't get leadership from coaches as much as fans think, they get it from veteran players on the team. Talked about how he learned how to study from Thomas Everett and he learned attitude from James Washington. Also said Tony Tolbert and Moose were two players who taught him how to be a pro. Doesn't think we have players like that on this team.

Also talked about how the Niners safeties aren't anything special, but they will hit you when you come across the middle. Our guys aren't bad players, but they don't do that.

This quote's telling.

And it sounds like we're looking at at least two new members in the secondary. And my guess is that we're evaluating Centers in FA.

I think we get a new CB via FA, but as for Safety, don't be shocked if Elam is brought back. I think Henderson likes his game.

I do also think we get 1 veteran for the OL. I can't make it whether it's a C or OG, however. (Costa comments not withstanding.)

That's what I was expecting, too. But I should have pulled the actual quote for my reference there:

"In the secondary, I think we'll get better. We'll very likely have new faces over there," Jones said. "How many, I can't tell you. But I know we'll have some new faces."

That sounds like at least two players. I'm assuming it's at 3rd CB and either Elam's safety spot or Ball's dime spot. I guess it could also be Frank Walker's spot, too.
