Rob Ryan: "I’m only looking at DBs. Nothing else. DBs."

One of the challenges of keeping up with the draft these days is that there are so many sources of information, it's hard to keep track of what's going on.
And some of the most interesting nuggets of information reach us via sources that are a little outside of the established media mainstream: our friend JimmyK from BloggingTheBEast alerted us (exclusively) to three prospects the Cowboys had talked to at the Senior Bowl and we found out via a video posted on YouTube by ********* that Jerry Jones thinks the "defensive front is one of the strengths of our team".
And today we add another source: Alex Dunlap writes a weekly column for the Austin Chronicle and also attended the Senior Bowl practices, from where he filed a lengthy report, with this little nugget buried somewhere in the middle:
We spoke with Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan about their needs in the 2012 draft, and his sentiment was very clear. "I’m only looking at DBs. Nothing else. DBs." It is evident that the Cowboys’ defensive backfield has become a major liability. We will not be seeing a repeat of the 2011 season in 2012, when 10 of 11 defensive starters returned for the Cowboys...

I know he's touted Spencer before, something like this suggests they're going to resign him. I just hope they don't reach for a player in the first if Clai and Dre (heh) are both gone.

I dunno....but I'd be looking at pass rushers, nothing but pass rushers.

Well if we get you and Ryan together we might just solve 2 issues on defense. :laugh2:

I think the problem with our pass rush is that opposing QB's don't have to hold onto the ball for any length of time. All their WR's are open. Fix that and we'll probably see a better pass rush.

I think both units need to help each other. I agree that there were times where guys were open after just a real quick drop, but there were also instances where QBs had ALL DAY to throw.

How many times this season did we see the opposing QB (especially Eli) just about to be sacked with our guy wrapping him up and they just fling it up there and still complete the pass? Our pass rushers were getting there pretty quick and they were still completing passes thrown up as prayers left and right. Ware would have had 5 sacks on Eli if he hadn't just flicked it away in the last second knowing he would complete it.

I saw times where there was ZERO pass rush, and the QB had all day... I would like a better pass rusher than Spencer. Give me a 10 sack a year guy to help out Ware...

On the nosey.
And his dog would be well trained too.
THe way I see it, the Giants draft Dlinemen constantly and those guys cover a LOT of holes in that defense.
That's all they brought to the super bowl the last time...the d line...rest of the team was mediocre.

The pass rush, straight up without blitzing like crazy, is pitiful.

Lots and lots of pass rushers.

Name the last team that rode a great secondary to the SB.
Cause I can name more than a few who rode a great front 7.

I you notice....
The giants weren't exactly making Romo's life miserable....
He had to hold onto the ball long than he would have wanted. Therefore allowing an already good pass rush to get to him.
So i feel both go hand in hand.
How may times have we seen a QB in desperation mode, about to be sacked just heave it up for grabs? Only to see our DB's not named Jenkins looks like complete tools?

Agree with the latter, and don't disagree about the Gints secondary, but Romo had 0 time to throw in the last game. None at all. You don't get 6 sacks on an elusive QB without getting ridiculous pressure.
Their pass rush combined with the fact that we don't have any receivers who get open quickly, or a passing game designed to counteract quick pressure (quick slants, comebacks, etc.) meant that Romo had no chance to be succesful

Packers last year.
Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Charles Woodson.
They were STUDS.
Granted their pass rush wasn't all that bad but their secondary was brilliant in the playoffs.

from all accounts the Boys have not contacted his agent at all in the last year. That is not the sign of a team anxious to resign anyone.

May be but it can be done. He asked to name one team and it was actually the last team that one the super bowl.

I agree their secondary was very good. But they could have won with a lesser one, its not like that was their key to winning. (plus you are under-rating the GB pass rush last year - they had 47 sacks during the season, 5th in the league).
Again I asked for teams that specifically rode their secondary to a SB. Teams like the Steelers, Tampa Bay and Ravens have done it with their front 7 pretty much alone. No one has done it because they had great CBs with a mediocre pass rush.

ONLY proven starters and then you have Carter and maybe scandrick: every other player is a JAG....period. ONLY looking at DB's? God what a complete moron. Hopefully he's just jacking them around like his billionaire bumpkin boss likes to try to do: yeah, I know never does any good for him either.
