Jones feels weight of April NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is three weeks away, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is losing sleep.
Jones took enough time from his professional football concerns Thursday to speak at a fundraiser for local Boy Scouts at the Albert Pike Masonic Temple in downtown Little Rock.
The luncheon lasted until 2 p.m. As 200 businessmen hurried back to their jobs, after they donated $192,500, Jones stood behind his table and said "almost everything" is considered before NFL prospects are drafted.
Dallas has two first-round selections in the 2005 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 23-24. "I worry more about the draft than anything," Jones said. "I have trouble sleeping. It is such an important thing for your team. In today’s NFL, players you draft have to make an immediate impact. There’s so much money involved, the days when you could stockpile players is over. You have to draft people who can play right away."
Dallas finished 6-10 last season. Jones said the team hopes to draft players who can contribute on defense.
Jones said that did not mean there is a lack of interest in former Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones.
Matt Jones’ value has risen since his postseason performances during Senior Bowl week and in drills and sprints in front of NFL coaches and scouts. "Matt Jones is so talented," Jerry Jones said. "There would probably be a position change for him, but even if he’s not a starter, I think he could be an outstanding player on special teams. That’s 30 to 35 plays a game right there. And then if he’s on the field for five or six plays in special situations on offense, that’s 40 plays a game."
Jones said he is confident Dallas can return to Super Bowl contention this season. "In today’s NFL, teams can go from not making the playoffs to the Super Bowl in one season," Jones said. "We clearly had a disappointing season last year. But we’ve made some nice additions, and we fully expect to have an outstanding draft. If we do, we will be right back where we want to be."
Jones said background checks are an important part of draft preparation. "You can only measure so many factors," Jones said. "One thing that is difficult to measure is whether these players will have the discipline to handle having, for the first time for many of them, a lot of money and lot of freedom they didn’t have in college.
" That’s why I like it when I see on a resume that a player has had several years active in the Boy Scouts. That makes a difference. When I see that, I can feel confident that they’ve had solid guidance. "

I hope BP locks JJ in a closet without a cell phone on draft day. The guy needs to stay as far away from our drafts as possible!!!

Poor Jerry. He genuinely does love his team, and you can tell that he desperately wants them to improve. I think it's going to happen. I don't think the Super Bowl is going to happen immediately, but I sure like hearing that's the goal.

"uhh... umm... *lip smack* I uhh... um.. will not ... ahh *lip smack* trade um... the Dallas Cowboys draft picks for... um... players,... *lip smack*... uhhh... scout's honor."
The thought of JJ drafting Matt Jones in the first round would SERIOUSLY scare me. With Parcells running player decisions/draft board that just isn't happening.

I think Matt Jones is a real option in the second, assuming he's there.

I hope everyone realizes that Jerry Jones is a asset to the Cowboys organization. True, he should not be the primary decision maker on draft day. His past selections has to be rated poor at best. However, if there is a trade or FA signing to be had, I want Mr. Jones at the head of the table. He makes things happen. Be sure that he has learned his lessen from the Galloway trade.

i'm so tired of hearing Matt Jones talk. the guy is a QB trying to play WR, and it will take him a couple of years to get adjusted to the WR position if he ever does get adjusted.

It did not take Crayton very long. I would not consider Matt Jones early in the draft but if in later picks he is around I would have no problem with him based on the scouting reports as well as seeing his athletic ability at Arkansas

I think too much is being made about all this transition stuff. If I thought him getting open depended on crisp route running and perfect technique, I would worry. But I think this is the sort of guy who will out-jump people in the redzone for touchdowns. He's someone you can put the ball in his hands and let him do something with it. In short, he's a playmaker and a weapon. I think the team needs more of that.
In the meantime, the other young receivers here could be developing, and this doesn't exclude Dallas from picking up someone else later.

Tell me what you think Jerry Jones has to do to redeem himself for trading two First Round Picks for Joey Galloway?

It didn't take Hines Ward very long to become one of the best in the game.
The thing about Matt Jones is a QB knows how to read defenses, find the holes in a zone, and run routes...they've seen it from the other side, so wr is not a difficult transition unless they have bad hands or no speed.
This kid has both, and he has been a star/stud in the SEC with long long td plays and huge impact. They aren't just looking at a workout warrior but a guy who changed the face of every game he was in, considered the MVP by many of the SEC...but a guy who isn't a QB.

Generally this is right on. There are always those guys who create press every year before the draft then often fall off the map later.
You had to have seen this kid in college the past four years. Then seen him at the combine.
He is a freak of nature and I think he actually will be a great player at WR/TE ala Novaceck. A bigger faster Novaceck. That's just speculation but I'd bet money on it.
If he's around 42 or near a trade down I wouldn't be surprised to see him. Remember Parcells fascination with TEs. And this kid has plenty of frame to grow another twenty pounds and still be fast.
This draft has to be causing people to lose sleep. It's just so deep in the first three rounds outside the top 20 or so.

from what i read, jerry has already speculated how many plays he can get out of jones. interesting statements, in the context of desiring players who can contribute from Day One. everyone must see the writing on the wall - we aren't giving up that second round pick.
in fact, i'm speculating now that trading out of 11 into the last 10 spots is likely. 20 will be spent on a DE and jerry will jump on this kid late in the first round, just to make sure...
bledsoe would love this pick - payton too with the options and formations he could use. we sorely miss an explosive threat downfield. now that we have julius totin the rock, lets find the next micheal irvin!!!

You're going to fool around and make some sense ;) It does sound like Jerry, in particular, has given this a lot of thought. It also sounded like Parcells loved the kid at the combine, and we all know how Bill feels about his favorites.
Personally, I think he would be a fantastic pick for both the present and the future. I think you have to keep in mind what role he will be playing though. He's not being drafted by anyone to be a number one receiver. He'll be a specialty type player who can do a lot of things to help a team win. I think he would be a great addition here.

If we somehow acquired a 3rd round pick, I wouldn't mind spending it on Jones. I think he could eventually be quite a weapon.
I just wouldn't feel comfortable spending one of our first 3 picks on a player who's going to have to make such a drastic position change.
He said that he *really* doesn't want to play TE, so I think WR is where he'll play.
I'd like this if we go 3-4:
Trade down from 11 to say, 15 and take Pollack (3-4 OLB).
Take Spears at 20 (3-4 DE).
Take Josh Bullocks at 42.
Then take Jones with the thirs acquired from going 11 to 15.
Having said all that; Jones very well may not last until the 3rd.
Or, if we stay 4-3:
Take E. James at 11 (4-3 DE).
Trade down from 20 to say, 26 and take Burnett (4-3 OLB).
Take Josh Bullocks at 42.
Then take Jones with the third acquired from going 20 to 26.

LMAO. Jerry looks like Mini Me in that photoshop.
Matt Jones in the first round might be one of the most ill advised draft picks EVER.
Please stop the madness, With Parcells in charge I am confident we don't draft a total project on Offense when DEFENSE is our problem.....
JJ and Lacewell would draft Jones - I am SURE of that!

I missed this the first time I read it. Apparently, the Cowboys will be going after a lot of Oklahoma and Ohio State players, since they already have experience handling money from their time in college. :D
