Head coach Jason Garrett says teams always would like to narrow their needs list by the draft in late April.
"In a perfect world, what you want to try to do is go into the draft without needs," Garrett said in a Year-End Special TV interview with Brad Sham. "I think you tend to draft worse when you say, "I think we need to draft this position or that position. And regardless of how objective you want to make that process, you invariably say, 'OK, we have a need here, so maybe we bump a player up ahead of this guy when they're really probably pretty similar."
"In an ideal situation you want to address your needs prior to the draft. Hard to do that, but you're trying to do that so you can draft as purely as possible. Couldn't do that last year."

The lockout was the lockness monster to us Cowboys last season. It left the team unable to maneuver creatively and responsibly at the same time.
Age, production, and cap became so co-mingled, that the team was kept captive by having to waive old expensive players, and open up tender areas with undeveloped players.
A strong necleus of skilled players was shown, but at the same time, the defensive secondary, pass rush, and blocking dwindled.
A note upon need at free agency, is good to see coming from the mouth of Jason Garrett.
He's talking team directions now, and I'm listening...and I hope that Stephen and Jerry both are as well.
This is one season that Dallas needs to be keenly involved in less than a month from now. At the tune of about five veteran players added to roster, from outside.

a great post CC but i would also like to add how happy i am the cowboys are already tackling the offseason and pin pointing where best to put their energy and time. This offseason already seems to be more productive than last year and im hoping Garrett can keep it up knowing this is a grueling schedule for him when for most it seems a downtime.

I keep hearing how the lockout hurt us.
From what I remember every team in the league had to deal with the lockout.
Almost every team had somewhat of a coaching and player personnel change and a good portion had scheme changes to deal with also.
The lockout impacted the whole league just about the same.
