View Full Version : Uniform question
When did we switch from the thinner, navy blue numbers to the thicker ones in royal blue? I really wish we'd switch back. One of the posters on here has a signature with Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith side by side, and it's obvious to me how much worse the uniforms look now than in the '70s and early '80s.

I've been saying for years that we need to go back to the uni's from the 70's. I LOVE the greyer helmet and bluish/grey pants.
But I do like the bigger numbers.

I like the Silver looking pants and the Silver helmets over the duller Silver-grey helmets and pants. I also like the thinker numbers but I would rather see them in Navy rather than Royal. But I like the Navy jerseys that we use now over the old Royal jerseys.

Ditto. Why the hell do we have royal blue numbers when our dark jerseys and the stars on our helmets are navy?

OK. I might be wrong on this but I seem to remember reading something about the color pallates the teams use. The are supposed to have exclusive use of those color combinations and they must continue to use them in some form or they lse the exclusivity on them. Like if we didn't use the navy blue at some point in combination with the silver, the Cowboys could lose that color combination to another team. I know it doesn't seem like it's much but I think the teams are somewhat protective of these color schemes.

I made some similar arguments in a diff forum:

I believe it was the 91-92 season when the Cowboys went to the royal blue, thicker looking numbers.
I too thought it was strange, but over the seasons, it has grown on me. We have won big in those thicker numbers that exude the royal blue ... and we shall win again in that color scheme.

No way. I think they are sharp looking. But they should stay for special occasion-use only. I really like our present day uniforms. They are sharp looking.
The royal blue and the navy blue really make each other stand out in a good way. Works well together. Anyway, we just need to win games and get back to playoff form year in and year out.

Actually, it was around 1986-87.
Below is a picture of Herschel Walker and he had the thick royal blue numbered jersey. He joined the team in '86 and I seem to remember the thick royal blue numbers starting to be worn around that time.

I always liked the older dark navy blue serif styled numbers we wore in the late 70's to early 80's. I recall hearing after the change was made that the new manufucaturer didn't have a serif styled template like we had used in the past so the team opted for the thicker bold numbers. But, I don't know why they went with the royal blue instead of the dark navy. It definitely doesn't look as good or match the blue star on the helmets.

Plus, the numbers look like they're stitched-on fabric, instead of ironed-on plastic.

Thanks for the correction Bach. You are very right. Pic and all. :D

I remember seeing an old video of Gil Brandt or Tex Schramm explaining how the 'Boys picked the new uniforms. One of the most important factors was how well the color combinations and numbers could be seen in the shadows etc., and how well they were picked up by the cameras.
That video might have been done in the 80's before JJ bought the team.

I guess I'm the only one who likes the royal blue...
I even liked our old blue royal jerseys... Except for their being unlucky. :(

But remember our striped socks? We got rid of them after our second Super Bowl in '94. Began the new '94-'95 season with the royal blue and white sock.

Lab, I like our Royal Blue as well. Actually, since having our royal blue color scheme, we have won big in that color. All 3 Super Bowls in the early to mid 90's.
We just have to gird up our loins and gitter done. :D

My favorite blue jersey's were the ones we started wearing in '81. I never did like the royal blue ones we wore in the 70's. I think the last time we wore them was in the '80 championship game at Philly. I remember the week leading up to that game a big deal was made out of the Eagles choosing to wear their white jersey's at home and forcing Dallas to wear their "jinx" blue ones.
The very next year we had brand new dark blue road jerseys.
