Until 1992 my answer was a tie between Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Harvey Martin. But, Charles Haley was the missing piece to the Cowboys team in the 90's that paved the way for us to win 3 championships. That is why he is my favorite Cowboy DE of all time.

dallas native, "the beautiful" harvey martin - otherwise known as "too mean". unofficially 113/114 career sacks (they weren't an official stat when harvey started playing) with a single season high of 20 (wonder what he'd make in todays market - $$$$$). 4-time Pro Bowl starter, 1977 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and a Superbowl co-MVP (harvey the 1st SB MVP to pass away).
why too tall and harvey are not in the hall of fame makes me sick. those two were something else!

being born in 80 I missed most of the greats in Dallas history, so I think I have to go with Charles Haley. I do have a strong like for Ellis though, I'm a sucker for solid hard working consistant players who never take a play off and have no weaknesses in their game.

holds more Super Bowl rings than any other player.

Gotta go with Harvey Martin. 1...Martin . A dominater in his day. 2...Ed Too Tall Jones. Did everything well. 3...Charles Haley. A game changer, wish he would have been a Cowboy longer. 4...Jim Jeffcoat. Mr reliable, always played hard, solid in all areas. 5...Tony Tolbert. So underated its pathetic. Rushed the passer and made more tackles out on the edges against r.b's than any D.E iv'e ever seen. 6...Greg Ellis. Very simalar to Jeffcoat. True lunchpail guy. Hard worker. Better against the run than Jeffcoat, but not quite the passrusher Jeffcoat was. In fairness, never had the supporting cast like Jim did. Dayum!...we've had some nice ends!

How could you not love Harvey Martin after this famous quote....
"Orange Crush is a soda watr, baby. Not a defense."

2. Charles Haley aka the Prince of Darkness
3. Ed "Too Tall" Jones
4. Jim Jeffcoat

Harvey "Too Mean" Martin. I remember him absolutely dismantling the Giants offense one game after they attempted a chop block at his knees. He went ballistic and got a 15 yard penalty for it. He then proceeded to Sack their QB on 3 consecutive plays with a straight up bull rush that planted the offensive lineman in the QB's lap on one play and left him looking like a speed bump on the next two. The rest of the game went pretty much that way as well with him living in the Giants backfield.

I agree! Martin was an unstoppable force in his day and I don't believe I have ever seen one player have as much of an impact as Haley did with our defense. Both players had to be foremost in the opposing offenseive coordinators gameplanning. Both players made the seconday's of their time a whole lot better. It makes a cornerback look awfully good when he only has to cover for a few seconds. If we would of had a pash rusher anywhere close to one of these guys Newman would of probably made the Probowl last year. ;)

Cole played more at DT later on in his career... after Jones and Martin assumed the DE spots.Cole played all over the D-Line. He played whatever they needed him to play and played it fairly well. He was replaced at several positions by some very good players I think Martin, White and Jones all replaced him at their positions but he could play anywhere. He is actually one of my all time favorite Cowboys...much like Bill Bates he was no superstar but he was no slouch and he gave you all he had.

Larry Cole played DE:1971,72 73,74, & 1980
Played DE/DT:1975 and 78 & 79
Played DT: 1976
He played DE more than DT.

I usually side with the 1970s era players, but I can't in this case.
Jones was very steady, durable and reliable (except for ditching the team to try boxing for a year).
Martin was a great pass-rusher, but he sometimes ran hot and cold and really tailed off late in his career.
Ellis and Tolbert are similar and Cole should have a special place in the heart of all Cowboy fans. Andrie was underrated.
I think possibly the best DE I ever saw was Haley. He may have been unpredictable and strange off the field, but on the field, he was brilliant. Extremely smart and had natural instincts to play the game. He made so many game-changing plays.

"The Beautiful" Harvey Martin was my favorite... I had a photo of an action pic where Joe Theesman was standing in the pocket ready to launch a pass and Martin was closing in from his blind side ready to run over the pompous Redskink QB... Pure art! SNIFF!!
It is an absolute travesty and an unsolved mystery as to why Harvey Martin has never even had a sniff at the HOF... It ought to be called the Hall of Injustice.

It ought to be called the Hall of Injustice.I agree, but don't blame the Hall of Fame. It's a place where the greatest players of the sport are supposed to be enshrined. The ones to blame are the people who make the decisions. It's the Selection Committee who is truly to blame.

I'd agree with that except I can't vote him all-time Cowboys DE like I cant vote Deion all-time Cowboys CB.
He was only here for a minute and had a bad back the majority of that time.
Martin was maybe the last guy willing to admit he hated guys on the other team simply because they were the other team. He was a Dallasite and absolutely hated the Redskins with a passion.

I love Greg Ellis as a player... he's valuable to the team and personally I think he was the best player on the D last year... but, there is no way I can see picking him ahead of Too Tall, Harvey Martin or Jeffcoat... I would add Haley to that list but he was just here a few years... but had a HUGE impact... my choice would be Too Tall...

In all seriousness, my favorite is easily Haley. He was someone who would just intimidate the hell out of the opposing team, and I read where that's a big reason why Johnson traded for him. You need at least one "enforcer" on both sides of the ball.

Most consistent performer- Ed too tall Jones
then there are good ones in Harvey, Ellis, Tolbert

Too Tall would be #1 but a close 2nd would be George Andrie. Our D-Line back in the late 60s- early 70s was incredible and we routinely led the league in sacks.
Harvey Martin, Tony Tolbert, Larry Cole, and Greg Ellis would round out my favorites. Haley was a great player but not a guy I really liked.

My favourite DE is Ed "Too Tall" Jones. For some odd reason I really liked the way he was so relaxed but so dominant. I loved the nickname and the way he played the game. To this day I'd still say he's one of the main reasons I became a Cowboys fan. Of course THE main reason was the dodger. But that's another topic.
Haley +1 How many QB pressures did that guy register? That guy made Kevin Smith and Larry Brown look good.
