So I've decided to once again attempt to make my fat, lazy, out of shape butt start doing something about being a fat, lazy, out of shape butt.
With that in mind I started to think about what to do. I have P90x and Insanity and I've done a round of P90x before. The problem was that I skipped quite a few workouts during the 90 days and struggled on many other because the program is so much more advanced that it's very tough for a guy like myself whose so far out of shape to keep myself motivated to do it properly.
Don't get me wrong they're fantastic programs and two programs I look to hopefully get into and do properly, and get the most out of it, by years in.
So with that said I decided to go out and get the lower version, the first version, of P90 and give it a go. I'm looking, right now, at doing a couple rounds of it (6 months) and see where I can get and then decide rather I'm ready to move onto P90x.
Has anyone else ever used the P90 program? If so did you like it? Was it difficult to stay motivated? How exactly did you go about picking which work outs to do when?
I'm starting on Monday. This weekend I'm going to go out and get the right types of food for the house to go with the workouts and get my vitamin supplements and stuff that I need. Hopefully in the next 6 months I can stay motivated like I need to, eat right and workout hard and like I'm supposed to, and try to lose about 60 pounds in that time. It's a lofty goal but I'm definately wanting to make the attempt.
Anyone else interested in starting a workout system on Monday and having some sort of topic here on the forums where we can post each day and be accountable to one another? I'd love to have something here where we all motivate one another and give each other advice and help.

I've done p90x and Insanity. Not p90. The p90x workouts were very solid, I thought, but the time commitment was a PITA. Insanity was more manageable, b/c I could complete a workout in the time it took to watch a Netflix hour-long show (with the commercials removed).
I'd be up for some sort of accountability topic. Right now, I'm just running intervals 3-4 times/week and doing an hour of kickboxing with my oldest. I'm looking for a remote partner to help me train for a light 10k run or two or maybe a half-century this summer. Not looking to do anything crazy, but really to find 5-6 guys in my situation to help keep me motivated.

I've done P90x. I liked it, but it was hard to stay motivated after 2 months. I have had better luck by joining a gym with a friend & holding each other accountable. My gym offers lots of free classes for members, so I go to Pilates on Mondays, Yoga on Tuesdays, strength/core circuit on Wednesday, spin on Thursday, and lift heavy & core with my friend on Fridays. In a couple of months I will change it up again to keep it from getting stale.
workout with Friends = accountability
regular class = accountability
accountability = better chance of success
Also, find an activity you enjoy (tennis, soccer, cycling, jogging, softball, etc) and join a team that has regular practices and games/matches/races/etc. It will keep you motivated & provide you with a fun way to stay in shape. There are groups for all levels, and you will meet new people as well.

I did P90 a couple of years ago. You won't need to do two rounds. You will be bored out of your skull after 90 days. When I completed it, I went straight to P90X and wished I had done so after 2 months with P90. It is a great program to get you going. A good mix of strength and cardio exercises.
I like the Ab Ripper that comes with P90 MUCH better than Ab Ripper X.

I'm doing a mixture of a few workouts from Insanity. I have a somewhat screwed up lower back so a lot of the jumping stuff I have to cut out. I went through a few of the DVD's and wrote out my own mix and match workouts that all fit in place of one of the regular DVD's. Depending on the day, I switch out different exercises and keep up with what's going on the TV.
I've been hitting the Upper Body Weight Training 3 times a week as well.

Excellent information here folks.
Thanks for the tip on the P90. I'll keep that in mind as I go through it this first time. I think it will all depend on how well it works and if I feel good about the move up. I just don't want to move myself back up to the much harder one if I know I'm not ready and won't give it the full effort it needs to get the best results out of it.
I'll try to keep this up to date with what I do each day, starting on Monday, so hopefully this thread doesn't get lost in the shuffle and will hopefully keep some of us coming back and staying accountable.

My best advice is to get a gym membership. Planet fitness has a black card (so you can bring a friend) and lots of machine weights, which I like to use because of my tendons/joints at 35. But they have free weights and they have good deals. I recommend doing high repetition of low weights to start out and definitely do cardio mixed with weight training.
Good luck!

I did P90X about 6 months ago. I loved it. Here are my few tips........
1.Set a time every night to do it (or morning, but night is better for me). And flat out DO IT. No exceptions. Even if you don't want to do it, tell yourself you are only going to do 15 minutes of it. You will find that once you get to the 15 minute mark, you will push yourself to finish it.
2. Watch what you eat. If you eat the same old crap, you won't see the pounds come off, hence you won't be as motivated to keep doing it. Once you see the lbs come off, that is all the motivation you need to keep doing it, so eat well.
3. Forget the chin up bar. It is hard, especially if you are really out of shape. Just do some push ups instead, or some free weights and lift them when he is doing the chin ups.
My wife and I were doing it for a couple months, and were really enjoying it. Then we went on vacation and when we came back, we found it very hard to restart it. So, and I can't stress this enough, DON"T STOP. If you stop for even a week, you won't want to start again.
No doubt about it though, the program works. Especially if you eat right. I wouldn't focus on the meals they tell you to eat. Just eat sensibly. No fast food, eat more veggies than normal, and eat leaner foods like turkey and chiceken. The lbs will start falling off of you.
Also, if you find yourself losing motivation, I found it helpful and go to youtube and watch the before and after videos of P90X. It can help get you over the hump somedays.

That is a pretty good idea. In fact, why not put it out for everyone, kind a P90X challenge. Everyone who wants to participate can say so on the thread. All of us start on a specific day and we put our weight in. Every week, we update with our new weights.
Might keep many of us motivated, and accountable like another poster said.
I tore my ACL about 6 weeks ago, so I can't do too many things, but I would still start it with everyone else, I just wouldn't be able to do some of the things the video has you do.

Not a nut...but it's pretty hard to top it. I can't afford the 100+ a week to join a gym (without incurring the wrath of my wife), but I have some of the basic equipment (med. ball, rope, kettles) and incorporate it into my workouts along with P90x. Haven't done Insanity, but it looks like a good program.
I will, however be joining a CF box as soon as I leave Florida. I miss burpees (not).

Good to know what the gym fees are, more or less. There's one on the way home from work. I've been toying with the idea of stopping in, but was expecting it to be ~$200/month or so. I'll still probably check it out. I'm dreading that level of commitment to a workout, but felling like I really need to kickstart things again.

I started the P90x workout for a month, and stopped doing it. i regret it. i once again have restarted, but im focusin more on my 'upper body' so im juss doing my 'Chest n back' + 'Arms n shoulders'.
Im no model, but i certainly aint 'fat'. im 150 lbs 5'8. im juss really looking to tone my body, more than lose any type of fat. im not obsessed with abs, since i think im not committed enough for a diet.
good luck tho', keep at it.

CF fees range from box to box, but most are typically within $100-175/mo, with most offering discounts for military, police, firefighters, etc.
I highly recommend joining, even if it's only twice a week. You'll learn (or re-learn) some of the most explosive movements you can do for your body. Getting in there and mixing things up with deadlifts, cleans, front squats, burpees, sprints, and all sorts of explosion exercises.....you'll find yourself constantly interested and motivated. Also constantly sore. CF is hard as hell, but it's fun and challenging....and you usually have other CFer's pushing you harder than you would by yourself. Mix it up with your other routines...I run, do P90x, and my own WODs at home.

Yep. It's damn expensive.
...but comparing CF to a normal gym is like comparing a F-22 to a Smartcar. You get what you pay for.
If all you're going for is big biceps and a 400lb bench, a "gym" is all you need. If you want to be in better shape, be able to run faster, jump higher, and outperform everyone you know (at any age)...then go with CF.

Anything would help. Just something to keep people coming back and posting.
As of today, day 1 for me, I weighed this morning and I'm 280.6 pounds. Extremely fat and out of shape, obviously, and that's where I start. I got up this morning had my breakfast, and got my multivitamins in like i'm supposed to. I'm prepared with my snacks and such as well.
So it begins today. Good luck to anyone else whose attempting to get started as well.

I think we're going to get one at our local Simmons Center where I will do some of the resistance workouts there due to them having the better range of equipment.
The membership is more though for the swimming pool, wall ball court, basketball court, and the track though.
But I'll definately mix some actual gym time in, for the resistance workouts, to keep things spiced up and working.
I appreciate all the quality advice folks. It really does mean a lot.

That Simmons Center is amazing...
I'd be hitting that up if I were you.
The biggest thing is planning your diet. If you plan what your going to eat then all is well.
I eat the same thing for breakfast and dinner 5 times a week. I don't have to do that to lose weight but for me it makes dieting a million times easier because I don't have to think about it and I can eat 1400 calories at lunch.

And yeah the eating right is the biggest step for anyone, especially us lazy folks who just love to eat.
I've got the whole family agreeing to do the better eating so that's going to make it much, much, much easier for dinner time and stuff. All I've really gotta do is focus on my breakfast, lunch, and couple small snacks. So I've got it a lot easier than some have it with a wife whose being committed to the same thing.

Heh, I know what it is and have done many workouts like that myself. My gym owner, who I've known for over 20 years, was one of the (sort of) founders of it -- even used to go around the country teaching proper clean, jerk, snatch, deadlift, squat technique at various CF gyms. He got out of it years ago because he didn't like the direction it was going.
It's definitely a much better workout than most of the crap people do. I'm just surprised it costs so much because other than the bumper plates and good bars, it mainly uses everyday props you can buy or make for cheap like boxes, ropes, medicine balls, all that stuff.

That's what I mean. You can get "in pretty good shape" doing just about anything, if you're motivated. Gyms are fine if you're into that sort of thing.
CF is another level.
...and CL is right...you don't need to pay 100-150 a month to do Crossfit. You can easily spend 200-300 bucks and create a home gym with most of the essential crossfit tools. That's what I'm doing.
I would, however, suggest that anyone wanting to try Crossfit first spend the initial money to learn proper technique. There are numerous ways to hurt yourself doing CF. I myself had lower back issues that left my writhing in pain every time we had a burpee workout. It was the weirdest thing.
There are too many exercises to master them all, but proper technique for the basics can be learned in a few months, and can save your body years of damage. After you get an idea what you're doing...I'd just do it at home. I'll take an intense home workout with medicine balls and a pull-up bar over any workout you would need a traditional gym for.

P90 Day 1 in the books and I really enjoyed the workout. Since I'm in absolutely horrible shape, worse than I even realised, that workout was harder than it will be once I've got my body more ready, and willing, to workout.
When it comes to workouts I've always been more about push ups and presses, and things like that and I love that this workout brings a lot of that. I noticed, very quickly, that quite a few of the moves are the exact same ones from P90x, minus the pull ups and the more advanced push ups and such. Which is great because those were the things I absolutely couldn't do much with, and having a smaller house there isn't anywhere particularly good for me to use the bands to simulate a pull up.
I feel, just from seeing this first workout, that this one is going to work very well to get me into better shape so that I can move onto P90x in the future and have a lot more success with it.
Some find these workouts boring, and that's fine, but I enjoyed it very much and it gives me the belief that with some hard work in this program I'll definately be ready to tackle P90x in the future.
Measurements, for those interested:
Chest - 47"
R. Arm - 15"
L. Arm - 14.5"
Waist - 50" (YIKES!!!!!!)
Hips - 47"
Thighs - 24"
Weight- 280.6 pounds
Body Fat% - 35%
Terrible numbers huh? Pretty eye opening. lol

Look at it as opportunity... your body fat numbers indicate that you have 98 pounds of fat you can lose. Lots of opportunity there! :)
Without reading through this whole thread... are you going to change your diet as well? I have a friend that drank 8 cans of coke per day. THat's about 1400 calories of coke per day! He switched to water & lost a ton of weight very quickly. Sometimes it is just that easy.
Good luck!

Yep. Changing my eating habits and eating much more sensibly, and smarter, and healthier.
Cutting out sodas and junk food entirely.
I'm not going to be a big time hardcore nut calorie counter but even the guy who runs the program, Tony Horton, isn't a calorie counter. It's about sensible, smart, food choices.

Good luck BHF....it's challenging, so set yourself up with some motivational tools ahead of time (before you have any urges to quit), so they're in place when the time comes.
You're going one up on me...I can't muster the fortitude to watch my diet. I still eat way too much junk, and eat in volumes that make most people ill. I've made some baby steps, but I have a long way to go. For now, I'll just continue to work my body to the point of complete exhaustion to make up for my diet.
Anyone know anything about HCG? A friend of mine that was special forces just put up a post on Facebook swearing by it...thought it seemed odd coming from someone so committed to demanding physical fitness. Said he's lost 18 pounds (down to 175)...but I'm not sure where it came from, seeing as how he was pretty damn fit to begin with. He must be down around 5% body fat by now.

Yep the eating right is by far the hardest part. It's tough to make yourself eat healthier when you've never really done it before. So I definately know where that challenge is.
I also have taken the advice of the workout program and put some motivations on my refrigerator to keep it in my mind and help keep me motivated.

If your friend was in good shape already and "used" HCG to get down to 5% then he's juicing his *** off. The whole idea behind the HCG diet is stupid and most of the weight loss comes from eating 500 calories a day and at that point you're just stripping as much muscle mass as fat so it's pointless. It would be great though if you want to feel completely terrible for a month or two.
Getting in shape is 60% diet and 40% exercise. There is no magic cure, it's hard and that's why most people aren't in shape, because it actually requires putting forth effort. If you eat sensibly and bust your *** 4x a week you'll see results in no time at your bf level.

Day 2 went down real well. I got all the way through that workout. It was hard, being so dang out of shape, but I was glad that I didn't quit and I didn't pause it one time.
The Ab Ripper 100 was really nice too. I've done AB Ripper X before and while I always liked it there were a few moves in that one that I simply couldn't do in any way. They were just far to advanced for a guy whose simply never been a workout guy.
Ab ripper 100 I was able to do all 10 moves to at least some degree and feel it working. That was a fantastic feeling.

Yesterday I finished day 3. I was very proud of it, most proud I've been in the early going, because its the workout I did Monday and wasn't able to finish. Last night I finished the entire workout and was able to do at least a few reps of every last set. I was very pleased with that.
I'm only on day 4 of this but I can tell you that sleeping better, eating better, and getting these workouts in I already feel noticably better. I'm in a better mood all day long, I don't feel as tired or cranky. Just 4 days and it's made a world of difference in my attitude. That's something I think we all over look when it comes to doing these things. Those little extras like how your attitude is because you just feel better.
Another positive that I've had that I was expecting. I've been a HUGE soda drinker. Always have been. Usually when I'd get into working out in the past, and cut the sodas out, I'd have a week long caffeine headache that just sucked so bad. I really wasn't looking forward to that this time.
But...I haven't had a single soda since Saturday and I've not had one headache. I don't know if it's the multivitamins I am actually taking this time around, which I've never taken before. So that's been a major plus as well.

Stay off the sodas. Drink water or tea, like green tea (which is supposed to speed up your metabolism). It sounds like you're definitely on the right track. The hard part is going to be consistency. But don't make excuses. Go.

Oh yeah that's the hardest part for sure but I'm liking how it's going so we'll see if I can keep my positive attitude on it.
Sodas are definately out now. I only drink water and tea and I'll occassionally have a small glass of milk or something but not very often. In fact I've had nothing but water and tea since Sunday.

I do have a question on multivitamins though. I have ones I'm taking now that I got at GNC. I know they're doing their job but man you have to take like 8 pills every morning. That's what 1 package of pills is each day. Plus their 1 month supply is like 60 bucks!
I've been looking at the Activit Multivitamin on Beachbody (has anyone here ever taken it) and I believe I'll switch to that one after this first month if for no other reason than it's much, much, much cheaper.
A 2 month supply of their multivitamin is 30 dollars. 30 dollars for 2 months as opposed to 120 at GNC!!!! Crazy.

I was just reading reviews and looking things up and Nature Made Multi Complete, a once a day capsule, gives me all the vitamins in one soft gell, rather than multiple pills, and at Walmart is less than 10 bucks. As opposed to the 60 I spent on the GNC stuff.
So, yeah, I'll be switching to this for sure. It's much more cost effective and much easier to take. That's a winning combination for me.

Don't buy anything at GNC. Ever. They literally mark up random things about 200% or have a store employee tell you a type of creatine will "get you huge" so you pay more. It's stupid. No vitamin is worth 60$ a month and there is no difference in creatine as long as it's a good quality and you take enough of it.
If you need protein/vitamins get them on the internet. Bodybuilding.com and Nutraplanet.com are reasonably priced and i've bought tons of stuff from both places. If you browse the forums occasionally you can usually find some good deals on protein too.
I take a vitamin called Orange Triad. Search for it. It's got good forms of most vitamins, an actual quality joint/flex formula, a digestion complex, and various forms of antioxidants. AOR Ortho Core is widely regarded as the best multi along with Life Extension but they're pricy. Orange Triad is 30$ for 45 days, but all you really need is half a dose, unless you have joint problems. So 30$ for 90 days. The joint complex alone was worth it for squat day.

Yeah, don't get duped into paying a lot for a multivitamin. Ideally, you eat well enough so that you don't need a MV. However, most of us don't eat that well, so taking a MV is like a safety net to make sure you get what you need. Your body ends up peeing out most of it (which is why your pee is extra yellow after taking vitamins... it's the excess B vitamins being cleared out.)
Definitely take one, but save your money... There is no magic to expensive stuff. Buy a name you recognize & can get cheaply (like Centrum) and you will be fine. Sure, there may be better vitamins out there. However, the additional benefit over your basic Centrum is negligible. Remember - you are already getting most of your nutrients through the food you eat. This is just a safety net to prevent you from becoming deficient in one area.

Yeah I've actually bought that before(have a Sam's club membership, love that place). It's not bad. Protein is protein for the most part unless you're having digestive problems or something. I've been lifting for a few years and need a lot of cals/proteins for my metabolism so I usually go with better tasting stuff since I drink about 3-4 scoops a day(breakfast/post workout). Just a preference.
An example of a deal I got online around New Years was three 5 pound jugs of a good protein brand for about 26$ each. That'd normally run me about 120$ so it's worth checking for deals before you buy imo.

Weighing yourself daily is basically meaningless if you're looking to measure exact weight loss for a specific day. If you are going to do it, the only time it's even worth doing in the AM as soon as you get up. (before eating or drinking anything) Your body's weight shifts up and down based on food and drink intake and recent exercise level.
This is why you don't weigh yourself every day. If you do it every few days or once a week, you get a general idea (trending) of the direction your weight is going.
Actually, the best thing you can do is track yourself in a mirror. Scales lie about how fat you are. (water / food weight vs actual fat) Using a mirror does not.

A Probiotic is for stomach health which leads to better overall health.
If I could only take 2 things it would be fish oil and probiotic.
If you ever take antibiotics then you really need them.
It replenishes the good bacteria in your stomach, fights off all kinds of stuff, helps breakdown your food better and also helps you get more nutrients from your food.

Very true for me. I have to have a probiotic. I was being prescribed them, but I've found I can do better with various strains at different ones for different times. Most times, I just buy the packets at the health store for $1.35... The ones with greens and super foods mixed in are the best for me.
The "Green Vibrance" is by far the most potent, per independent tests, but the others do just fine. The GV is also more expensive and so I only get it on the really bad days. Or when I'm feeling adventurous about my health.
I like it all mixed in one, but mostly I buy that stuff for the probiotics inside of it.

A workout plan I like, that I've had really good results with is a basic 5x5 alternating workout. You aren't in the gym slaving away because it's more focused workout and less free weights that focus on a few muscles.
If you want to try it out, here is the basics: *You can google search 5x5 workout plan and there are several different ones you can use. This is the one in particular I use.*
Basically 3 days a week, 45 minute workout and 15 min cardio each day.
Workout A:
5x5 Workout A
Squat 5x5
Bench Press 5x5
Barbell Rows 5x5
5x5 Workout B
Squat 5x5
Overhead Press 5x5
Deadlift 1x5
Week 1, Find a weight you can comfortably lift for these increments.
Week 2, Try to bump that up 5-10 lbs. If not, bump it up 2.5 lbs or whatever you can.
Week 3, Same
Week 4, Same
Week 5 & 6 you lift much more are more peak weeks. You lift a lot heavier weights but lighter increments 3x3 instead.
Week 7 and 8 return to the 5x5 schedule.
I am using this to bulk up and add more muscle. It works well for losing weight and toning up as well.

Day 4 of week 2 was knocked out last night. Yesterday wasn't quite as good a day as the previous days had been. I ate one bad meal yesterday, first one since I started eating right almost 2 weeks ago, and that sort of slowed yesterday down.
But I still feel really good about it all so far.
Also I have come across a couple questions in the last couple days I thought I'd throw out there to the more experienced workout folks here.
Yesterday after I ate lunch, the bad meal I mentioned, I got the worst headache. Is that coincidence or is that something that does happen from time to time when you eat a poor choice after trying to eat clean?
And the argument of weights vs. bands. Where do you come down on it? Do you feel that the bands are better for resistance workouts or not as good overall? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Resistance band training is good. It actually gives you more ways to work your muscles without getting in weird positions. (weights are lifted up, resistance bands can go any direction) Honestly, you don't even need weights (or bands for that matter) to work out. You can workout almost any muscle in your body without either of them.
There was this ex-military trainer that worked at our gym as a trainer. He was huge, but he said he never uses weights. (even though he trains people on them, because it's a gym) He will use medicine balls, ropes, bars (for pull ups), etc, but doesn't use any weights. (including dumbbells)

Yeah I know there are lots of ways. I went on Youtube one time and watched a series of workouts from folks who simply go out to a local park and use the park equipment as a gym for pull ups, push ups, dips, and such.
There are all kinds of ways to workout without equipment. I'm a guy who likes the old Dumbells and such but I've found that I love using the bands as well. You seem to get a really nice resistance at the peak of a move, giving more burn, and what I've found is the nicest thing about the bands, other than they're light, small, and easy to take anywhere, is that you don't seem to get the same wear and tear on your joints and stuff that you might with free weight use.
All the moves you do with the bands just seem really smooth and fluid. Now there are a few moves I still really prefer free weights on. Tricep Kick backs and military or swimmers presses. Anything that you press the weight over your head but that's only because I don't like the way the bands rub up against the back of your arms and such. I just don't like that.
But for flys and curls? Oh man. Nothing beats the bands for those. They're sweet for those moves.
Also I got my workout in beautifully last night. Strongest I've felt in the first two weeks and I was able to increase almost every exercise by 2 reps this workout. I felt stronger than ever on my push ups. This is really working well because the first workout on the 27th I struggled to get 4 or 5 push ups on each push up type.
Now I'm knocking out 8-10 on all of them. In just two weeks! It's amazing how well this works if you simply follow it and go hard. I'm loving it so much that it's actually making me not only enjoy working out but enjoy the thought of improving enough to step up to P90x next and improve even more.
I'm enjoying it and that's the key thing. I haven't missed a single workout so far for nearly two weeks and I can honestly say that's the first time that has ever happened for me.

It's an intense cardio workout. I have it. Another one of those things I got thinking I could do more than I physically could do. But now I've got it for when I work up to that. Once I do...man. That'll be a good day. :)

Yeah I'm working my butt off so that in the near future I can do the P90x workout and actually do it somewhat like it should be done.
I'm enjoying getting there though. It's been good.
This weekend I got my workouts in like I was supposed to, yesterday was the rest day actually, but my eating was a little hit or miss this weekend. It wasn't anything awful, no junk food or bs like that, but just a little off from what I'd like. Back to doing it right today. :)
Thanks again to all who've been supportive and continue to provide information and conversation in this topic. It's greatly appreciated.

Got the work out in yesterday and even added a little run/walk in afterwards. My 10 year old son loves to go for a run (We've done it twice this week now). He's 10 so of course he loves running. I'm not a fan of it unless it's for a sport but hey it's needed exercise. So I feel pretty good today about yesterdays work. I'm more sore in my legs today after doing the cardio workout and then running. Most of it has to do with the shoes i have to wear. I've got to find a better pair for working out and running. My left ankle and shins are just sore today.

My fiance and I recently ordered the P90-X (Or P90 not sure gotta double check now) and it arrives around the 26th or so of this month I believe.
We have a membership at LA fitness and it's hard to stay consistent with all we have going on. I find myself working out real well for one week and then missing the next week and the same for her. So we decided to get a home workout program.
Just a little history on me over a year ago I went thru a divorce. It was a low point in my life and I had put on a ton of weight those last few years of my marriage. So I joined a Fitness Bootcamp and dropped 75 lbs in 7 weeks. (Tried to workout on my own for a while after that.)
Since then I have put 20 lbs back on and my weight has gone up and down. I lose weight very quickly but I also gain it quickly. Looking fwd to my P90(X) vids getting here, we are amped!! Will be posting updates soon.
Just curious (If you don't mind me asking,) how much weight have you lost so far? And inches on your waist?
Keep up the good work you have inspired us.....:flex:

As far as my weight and inches go I won't know for another week. I won't weigh or get new measurements till day 30 which is a week from tomorrow. So Wednesday morning of next week I'll get my new weight and I'll do my measurements Tuesday or Wednesday night before the workout.
I'll have an update for everyone at the 30, 60, and 90 day marks.

Instead of starting a separate thread, I thought I would ask it here.
Do any of you that work out wear a heart rate monitor/calories burned watch or arm band?
I've been looking at them online as I start up in a new accessible gym today and I want to be able to keep track, but there are so many different options. I want a good one, one that you don't have to wear a chest strap, and one that is easy to use that won't break the bank. All have mixed reviews, so I was wondering if anyone here uses one and if you do what you like and don't like about it.
I more or less want it to see calories burned on the different machines I am using. A lot of them have pedometers on them which does nothing for me since I am in a wheelchair. I need one that shows calories burned on everything, not just walking.
Open to suggestions. I'm going to ask the trainers at the gym today if they recommend anything too.

I just bought a watch for heart rate monitoring from Walmart for 35.00. It has a feature for tracking heart rate continiously and calories burned in a workout but you have to wear a chest strap for that part. Otherwise you put your finger on the metal plate on top and it checks your heart rate that way.
I am not well versed in these so I don't know much about them but I don't know of any watches that will track continously without a chest monitor. I've got a buddy who just bought one that is a heart rate monitor and IPod all in one but that too has a chest strap and it's even more expensive. It was upwards of 120 bucks so he could continously track all those things and listen to his music.

Does your one from Walmart work well? I don't really care so much what my heart rate is, more so calories burned. I think my dad saw the one you use at Walmart when I had him look when he was at the store. If it works well, I might try it. I found a Timex (http://www.bodytronics.com/p/strapless_heart_rate_monitors/TIMHR) one online for about $50, no chest strap that does what I want. That's not so bad. One of the trainers recommended Polar, but they all have straps.
Before I totally rule out trackers with straps. Is the strap comfortable? Does it get in the way of any workouts?
One more question - is the watch really big? I've been reading reviews from women on all different monitor watches and some just are too big for women with tiny wrists -- I fall into that category. I really want a pink one, but frankly I just want one that works well and does a couple of things. I don't need the bells and whistles model. :)

Works extremely well. I'm quite pleased with it.
The chest strap isn't uncomfortable at all and doesn't restrict anything in a work. In fact after a few minutes you'll hardly even notice that it's there.
Now the size of the watch...yeah it might look a bit big on a womans wrist, particularly if she's tiny, but it's not huge or anything. I'd say it's an average sized watch for a man.
Definately worth the money though.

the watch doesn't have to be on your wrist when using the chest strap - just in close proximity. I used to strap mine to the handlebars of my bike.

Alright I hit the scale this morning. I gotta tell you I got on there just dying to see 10 or more pounds. Just knew that it was going to be a really good double digit number.
7 lbs...
WTH? That was my first thought. I'm looking at myself and I'm saying I know I can tell a pretty good difference already. How can this be?
So initially I was very discouraged cause I thought I was maybe fooling myself with the eye test. Seeing results that weren't really there, ya know? I mean 7 pounds? How can there be any real difference in seven pounds.
Thankfully the measurements confirmed that I wasn't just seeing things. I really have made noticable difference.
I lost 2" in my chest, 2" in my waist, 2.5" in my hips, 1.5" in my left thigh and 1" in my right (Seems so weird that I lost more in one leg than the other, lol).
And for my biceps....i actually gained 1.25" in each!
After seeing the measurements confirming what I could see I was PUMPED!!!!! I'm very pleased thus far.
So I'm tweaking my diet a bit for this next month, and I'm starting the second phase of the workouts, the longer and harder ones, with tonight so I'm really pumped about the workouts going forward.
I know those numbers might not seem like a lot to most folks but to me losing 2 inches almost everywhere is HUGE and then to gain a little in my arms...nice. I'm feeling really good.

Those are great results. Remember, you are adding muscle while losing fat. Muscle is more dense than fat, so it will contribute more per cubic inch to your weight than fat will. Don't let the scale discourage you... it really is not as important as lowering your body fat % and improving your cardiovascular capacity.
Kristi

That's 7 lb in a month, right? That's good. It's good to lose 1-2 lb a week. If you do it that way, the chances of it staying off are better.
I was a little discouraged this week as I wanted to hit that 25 lb lost mark and I was at 24.6. I would have hit had I worn my other tennis shoes. I don't take them off when I weigh, but my new ones are heavier and I had them on. Hopefully, I hit it next week and I'll do more measurements then too. Once a month is enough on those.
And as Wimbo said muscle weighs more than fat so if you are bulking up, it may not show up in pounds lost, but show up in your measurements as you begin to tone up.
Congrats on the 7 lb loss. A loss is a loss, and that's to be celebrated!!

Yeah that was in a month and I'm pretty pumped about it. Well I'm more pumped about the measurements then the actual pounds but that's because those confirm the eye test which is the be all end all to me.
Last night I started Sculpt 3-4, the next level up in the P90 workout and I was THRILLED with the extra work in it and the raised intensity of some of the moves. I'm really going to enjoy this workout over the next few weeks. Build up that strength more and more and do some shedding so I can hit the X next.
Great workout. Looking forward to Ab Ripper 200 tonight.

Congrats BraveHeartFan! Keep it up!
I'm not using the P90 but decided to get back in shape with diet and walking on my treadmill and doing pushups and situps. I walk 3-4 miles five times a week and in 7weeks, have lost 17 pounds...
I turn 40 this september so I want to get my fat, lazy butt in shape by then hopefully!

Congrats man.
Don't ever be disapointed with a 7lb loss. Thats a quality weight loss unless your 400 lbs.

Thanks Catch. I'm actually proud of it now. I was just really worried that I was wrong about what I thought I was seeing. I realise now that I wasn't and that things are going exactly the way I'd like them to be going.
I'm getting stronger with every workout and feeling better with every one. I did Sweat 3-4 last night for the first time and I'm gonna be honest that 3rd round of everything would have been brutal if I could have given it 110% the whole time. Unfortunately with the poor shoes I'm having to use I have a great deal of pain in my ankles and calves which is causing me to have to slow down more than I'd like in the cardio sessions.
I'm going to try and get that fixed soon though by getting me some quality shoes for working out and for my running.

Tomorrow I'm not going to make it to football practice cause I got 8 more hours of OT so tomorrow I'll take an official rest day for the first time since I started. lol
Feeling really good right now. I hope everyone has a great day and their workouts are fantastic for them this weekend as well.

I terminated my gym membership. The only thing I really couldn't do at home was use a treadmill. So, we just bought a treadmill. Got a freaking steal of a deal on it too.
We have been looking at them for a while. We wanted to stay below $1k. We narrowed it down to either the Sole F63 (http://www.soletreadmills.com/Folding-Treadmills/F63-Folding-Treadmill) or the Livestrong 10.0T (http://www.livestrongfitness.com/product/ls100t-treadmill?gclid=CJ68pI2mlq8CFUXc4AodTSv0zA). They seemed to be the best quality treadmills in the $799-$1,000 range.
We didn't even realize Dick's Sporting Goods sold Sole products. They only show Livestrong on their website. We stopped in there to look / test out the Livestrong 10.0T, but saw the Sole F63 sitting right beside it. Not only that, it was on sale for $699 with free delivery and setup!. SOLD! :laugh2:

Just to chime in....my wife and I have always been active people (kayaking, surfing, snowboarding, hiking, etc), but since we've moved to Florida we've both found ourselves doing less outdoors. While I've been working out some, albeit sporadically, my wife has not.
So I've been trying to find something we can both do together to get us back in the shape we're used to being in...we're on week 2 of Insanity. It's pretty great for both of us. I get to do something that is somewhat challenging with my wife. It's not on the level I really want, i.e crossfit, but it is a good compromise. I've done P90x a few times, and while I think it's a better program for men, this is the better weight loss and cardio program IMO. It's also easier do to the fact that you don't need any equipment...a hug bonus when you have to drag all of your weights around when you want to workout (which I do since I currently live in a condo).
AND, I like the diet program that Insanity recommends. We haven't stuck to it completely, but this is the first time that I've really changed my diet whatsoever, so that's a big step...probably cut about 1500 calories a day.

Sculpt 3-4 went down tonight. It was tougher tonight cause we had a cook out for Mania yesterday and I didn't eat nearly as clean and good as I wanted to cause of it so it slowed me down a bit today for my workout.
Still got it finished, and finished it up strong, but since the Hall of Fame show was on tonight I decided to skip my run afterwards. I'm disappointed about that but I'll kick the run in after my resistance workouts starting on Wednesday.

I love fitness and training, but i'm not as big on these pre packaged workouts. I know they work great for some people, but they seem to much like a "quick fix" to me. I think many people try to use these programs without really changing their lifestyle, and in a year or two they are right back where they started.
I like to take a more long term approach to health. I think the most important priority when wanting to improve yourself is your diet. Simple things like not eating refined sugars and avoiding garbage fast food can go a long way.
I am also a big fan of cardiovascular exercise, not just because of the obvious benefits to your body but because of the incredible benefits to your brain. (In mice, it has been shown that neurogenesis, or the generation of new brain cells continues much more effectively in mice that exercise, even old mice!) A mediocre cardio workout ever other day can go a long way to keeping yourself mentally fit as you age.
I am in school and time is a huge factor in how much I can work out. I think this is true for many working people as well. That is why I would recommend starting slow with realistic goals. Maybe quitting soda and walking/jogging with light weight lifting for the first few weeks. If your diet is sound and you stretch to retain your muscle mass, I find it can be very effective in avoiding "taking a step back" during busy weeks.

Well, it doesn't look like you got much protein here, but lots of carbs. You need protein if you are doing any sort of strength training - even if it's just the bands. Also, protein helps you feel full longer after a meal. What kind of energy drink are you taking? Most of those are sugar bombs that can mess up your diet, not to mention your blood sugar levels.

Yoga rocks. I am a fool for waiting so long to start doing it (started just over a year ago). I thought it was too girly. Boy, was I wrong. It is hard! Great exercise, and it targets an area that I (as most men do) neglected for years - flexibility. The benefits are numerous... in addition to muscle flexibility, other benefits are strength, balance, joint range of motion, endurance, soft tissue elasticity, and improved posture.

Sweat 3-4 and Ab Ripper 200 got grand slammed today!!! Booyah! Best cardio workout I've ever done. I'm not talking about how good the workout itself is, cause yes it's great, I'm talking about this is the best I've ever personally done on any cardio workout. I killed this today.
I got about 190 of the 200 ab erps in. I struggle still with the legs straight in the air one but it's the only one I struggle to do. The rest I can get to my 20, even though they are burning like hell when I do. In a good way though.
And for the Sweat 3-4 today I kept my heart rate in the 75-80% rate for about 90 percent of the workout. I really brought it to this workout today and I'm feeling amazing because of it.
I'm getting back on track and the motivation is growing by the day as I continue to see improvements in my cardio and strength every time I do something. I'm popping out around 15-20 pushups on almost every push up type now and that's amazing. Last night i popped out 18 wide fly push ups in the final push up max sequence.
18! At the end of the workout.
I'm so stoked right now it's unbelievable. I hope everyone is having a great Easter weekend and keeping their workouts in.

Sculpt 3-4 was completed today and it might be the most proud I am of any workout. Now let me explain.
Yesterday I was really sick. Flu or something so I was just out of it. In fact I went to sleep about 2 pm yesterday afternoon and other than a few minutes here and there to get up and go to the bathroom or get a drink of water, I slept straight through till 7 am this morning for work.
17 straight hours!!! Yes. I was out.
So today I wasn't sick anymore but I was really weak, and tired, and worn out cause of the illness yesterday and the sleep. I really didn't want to workout at all. I wanted to skip it. I almost did skip it.
But in the end I didn't. I decided I'd give it whatever I had tonight and I was able to complete about 85% of the workout with pretty much my normal numbers. Slightly less on some, right about the same on others, but most importantly I was able to get a large portion of it done and not miss a workout.
Which was very important to me.

I'm thinking about the P90X. Maybe down the road, but I'll be honest. I've been having success by going to my gym, and working out with the XBox 360 Kinect of all things. The Sports game season 1 has the track and field and the boxing games. The boxing is awesome, but I found it too easy at first. This was until I found you can increase the skill level of your computer opponent. I put it on "professional" and I'll be damned if I don't feel like I'm in a real fight in the ring. I sweat buckets, and can barely go three rounds if I don't get knocked out by the computer before that. I literally need to sit down like a real boxer between rounds! As for the gym, besides doing both cardio and weights, I've been on the treadmill alternating walking then sprinting for short bursts. A friend of mine told me to try it, and it's been great! I'm down 16 pounds now in a little over a month. Good luck to everyone fighting the good fight!

Well, ABS100 takes about 5 minutes or so, maybe a tad longer. But, the circuit training that leads up to the ABS100 has many other exercises that work the abs, like kicking up with the legs, some weight training in a position like starting a lawn mower with a weight that helps the abs, and other circuit, core exercises that help the abs. So, the actuall ABS100 is where you lie on the floor and do some of the "normal" abs exercises that we have all done before.
So, since P90 and the X version is based on muscle confusion the circuit training along with the ABS100 at the end, it all works together.
I really doubt that just doing the ABS100 or 200 by itself would do much.
And, as everyone has said, the abs start in the kitchen.

What's ab ripper 200?
Im about 4% BF away from see'ing abs so im thinking about finally doing some ab exercises. I hate Ab exercises more than anything in the world. Even Squats.
I've done the Ab Ripper X for about a month but since my BF was higher I felt like it wasn't worth the effort just to get gains that I couldn't see.
So is the Ab ripper 200 killer? Im actually looking for something easier than Ripper x.
Ab Ripper 100 and Ab Ripper 200 are the precursors (did I spell that right?) to Ab Ripper X.
They're shorter, less reps, but they're easier moves to complete and do all the moves. It's 10 moves (the same 10 on 100 and 200) the only difference is the amount. In Ab Ripper 100 you do each move 10 reps. In Ab Ripper 200 you do them 20 reps a piece.
They're really good crunch moves and such, some of which are similiar to ones in Ab Ripper X, but they're not nearly as advanced. More of the old fashioned type moves.
I did Ab Ripper X a few years ago, when I did my one round of P90x, and personally I enjoy Ab Ripper 200 a lot more and I feel like I get a lot more out of it because I'm able to do all the moves, with solid form, for the reps, rather than having to skip multiple moves because I simply am unable to do them.
And for tonight i got my Scuplt 3-4 workout in again tonight and killed it. I love the resistance workouts more and more every time i do one.

Well, today I finished day 11 of the circuit sculpt and cardio/ABS100.
When I look in the mirror, I can see the first top two little mucles in my abs trying to peek out at me. Four more and I will have a little six pack. :D
Each day gets just a little easier, but, it is still hard. I'm going to stay on level I-II for the rest of the month and then I might try and catch up to BraveHeartFan and go to level III-IV.
Also, it was either Wimbo or thompson75 that said something about thinking about your muscles as little peaks and valleys. Well, I am starting to see little muscle bulges in my forearms and my biceps, also in my thighs and calf's, and this is when I'm totally relaxed, not after a pump up with the weights.
Also, I have really been watching what I eat. I have not had any junk/fast/garbage food since I started. And, I'm not eating to get "full", I'm eating just enough to not be hungry.
Prior to starting these workouts, after I would eat lunch, I had to have a nap of maybe an hour or so. Now, I kick back and I doze off for maybe 1/2 hour but then am wide awake and have to get up to do something. I was never like that before.
This really works..

Yes I have got that but I have not used it. It's for after you've completed a full 90 day round it's an exercise you can sub in, for a harder workout, I believe on the cardio days if you decide to do another 90 day stint of Power 90 before going to P90x.
If you get to that last month and Sweat 3-4 is just way to easy for you, and I just don't see how it would be for anyone that wasn't already fairly fit before they started doing this, then you could sub the Sweat 3-4 out for that one instead.
I'm working late tonight so I'm going to be getting my workout in after 8 pm tonight but I'll be getting it in.

Completed Sculpt 3-4 again last night and KILLED it. Today, in about half an hour, is going to be Sweat 3-4 and Ab Ripper 200 again. Tomorrow I've got a couple hours of Flag Football practice. That's going to leave me about 10 days out from the end of month 2. It's flying by and I'm getting more and more nervous and ready to see the new results for the end of month 2. I can really tell that I've lost at least a couple more inches on the chest and waist and my strength has gone way up.
Last night I pushed out 20 decline push ups and still got 18 Wide Fly Pushups at the end of the work out in the final max rep upper body workout. Man was I pumped about that.
I've also taken to using two 25 lbs dumbells when doing one of my sets of Squats on the workout.

Today is cardio and abs and I can either take today off or tomorrow off. I'm taking today off and not even feel guilty! ;) I'll do the cardio/abs tomorrow to start the week.
Besides, yesterday, during the sculpt I worked at it hard and am just a tad bit sore all over so I'm going to kick back today and just chill out.
BraveHeartFan, good jobs on the pushups! Those 3 different positions just kills my arm and shoulders, but they do get a little easier as I go along.

Yes that third set of pushups when you do the Wide-Tri-Die set are killer.
I haven't been as happy as when I was able to get all 7 of those really close pushups. Those are freaking hard when you've already done a couple of other sets of push ups and all these other moves as well.
Finished my cardio abs this morning and I did the best I've done. I've really enjoyed this.

Well, I just finished cardio/abs100 this morning.
I did something a little different today just to try it out. During the kicks and the boxing, I used a little 5lb weight in each hand while doing these exercises. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, just a little more weight to help my upper body and arms. I'm going to continue using those little weights anywhere that I think it will help. I doubt doing the abs100 with them will do any good, but they felt good during the kicks and boxing.

Awesome, man! Have you been noticing results?
I'm hoping to do something like that this summer after I graduate.
This semester I've just been running 3x per week and I'm already down 25 lbs (I think I got about 15-20-25 lbs more to go).
But yeah I want to be healthy before I go to med school when I will definitely be very unhealthy.

Sculpt 3-4 is knocked down once more. I enjoyed the workout but I had to pull back just a bit tonight. I tweaked my groin muscle slightly during football practice yesterday so I took it a little easy tonight because even though I had no pain in the area anymore I didn't want to tweak it again. Figured I'd give it a little backed off work tonight to keep it healthy and keep myself going.

Well, I've had 17 days of workouts so far and I can see results already...
I have not eaten any junk food and I think that helps.
One thing I noticed is, after some workouts I feel strong and good, then on another day afterwards I feel weak and gimpy...so, I don't know what is happening to my body.
In other workouts that I've done, I've never felt that before. I think it's because of "muscle confusion"?
In the yoga, when I try and come from "down dog" into "the warrior" I almost always lose my balance like a newborn deer...sweating like a hooker in church!

P90x yoga is no joke. It's incredibly hard to get over the hump with it. I think I bailed after the first 35 minutes about 5 times before I finally made it through the whole thing. I then kicked myself in the *** as I realized that it gets MUCH easier after the first 37 minutes. :D

I've got a couple midnight to eight shifts tonight and tomorrow night which is going to really mess with my sleep schedule for this week but I'll get my rest and get my workouts in. I am just not sure about weighing in tomorrow morning now. It's weigh day but I'll be coming off a midnight to eight so I won't have slept any.
If I came home and slept and weighed in the afternoon is that going to be the same as weighing first thing in the morning or should I wait until Saturday morning when I can weigh after sleeping properly the night before?

From other workout methods, it suggested that you weigh yourself in the morning right after you get up. Just be sure that when you come home tonight to eat something light...and drink some water, go to sleep.
I'm just in day 24 of the I-II...I can't believe that I have not missed a workout. I did sculpt today and am kinda sore all over, but not that bad. I hope I can get to 90 days.
I'm not using the bands, but I am switching up my weights for the different exercises.
And, what is really jacked up? When I first started...I regretted the cardio, now, I sort of want to do it, and not the sculpt!
And, what scares me is that I'm just doing the I-II until the end of this month, then I'm going to try the III-IV...

Workouts have still been getting completed and I weighed and everything today.
For month 2 I've lost another 7 lbs. I'm down 14 so far in the first two months.
I also lost another half an inch, slightly more, in my chest, I gained a little in my left bicep, my right stayed the same as did my thighs, my hips stayed pretty much the same but my waist lost another 2.5"! I was very happy with that!
I'm going to push really, really, really hard for the final 30 days because I've already decided that I'm moving to P90x after that. I want to be as ready as possible for that.

Well, yesterday was my day off and I took it easy...
However, when I woke up this morning the back of my right shoulder was hurting like hell! I don't know what happened? Maybe I slept on my neck wrong or something, but it hurts.
I've been doing some light stretching on my shoulders to try and loosen it up, but it still is sore, but as of now not quite as sore.
So, to my disappointment, I have to miss today's cardio! I was thinking that although it's still sore that I might try and get through it this afternoon, but then again, I remember that if something is that sore, or injured (which I don't think is the case) that you need to just lay off for a minute...so, this is my first missed workout...I feel guilty.
Hopefully tomorrow I will wake up and it will be gone because I have no idea how it got so damn sore.

I wonder? Since I'm about 98 years old or close to it....:laugh2:
I might just take two days off instead of 6 days a week....?

Well, one month has gone by and it seemed to fly by. I did I-II sculpt/cardio/abs100 all month long.
Today I felt fine enough to exercise and did my first III-IV cardio/abs200. I was sweating like a dog in heat!
By the time I finish this month, BraveHeartFan will have already finished his 90 days. Just think, if I would have started the day he did, I would only have a month to go...but, I still have two months!

Sweat 3-4 and Ab Ripper 200 is exactly what I had today as well! Awesome workout and it flat kicks your butt. I love it.
Working pretty good in this final month but I'm looking to up the intensity of every workout till the end. Pushing hard.

I can't wait until you start P90X...I want to hear your posts on that one also. I don't think I will ever do that, I know that I would not make it.
I've done the P90X program and liked it but if it doesn't give you that six-pack you've always dreamed about you can try this.

Actually at the moment i'm undecided on what I'll do next. I was thinking I'd go to P90x but now I'm seriously considering going with Insanity next. I've got both so it's possible to do either for me.
I'm leaning slightly toward Insanity at the moment for the cardio build it will give me for flag football come fall. I can't decide just yet but I'm thinking I'm going to Insanity next.

I think that would be a good idea. P90X just looks to damn hard. It would be good if you want to have a body builder look, but the Insanity will give you more cardio.
Also, if you send a before and after picture they will send you a free t-shirt with the word "Insanity" on it...that would be cool. It's a 60 day workout, but, it says that it will also get you in shape and lose fat faster...and for you and your football gig...that might be the best way to go.

Kind of what I'm thinking as well.
I'm wanting to add some lean muscle but I've never wanted to have a bulky, huge, look. The nice thing about Insanity is that even with it being very cardio based it does have a lot of body weight resistance work which still allows me to build some lean muscle.
I think I'll give it a whirl. After that 60 days I can always go to P90x or a P90x/Insanity Hybrid if I want to do something different.

Without drugs and or outstanding genetics, getting the bulky, huge look is practically impossible.......If you have an average frame forget about it, so don't worry about that, good luck!

Don't listen to this.
If you want that look than it's all about lifting heavy and getting the propper nutrition. Mainly getting your Macronutrients right for your body type.

Genetics do play a big part. I saw a study where they put 6 guys on the same training and nutrition program for 8 weeks and a couple of them added a lot more muscle than the others.

Holy crap! So, I took all the angle pics of me on April 2nd the day I started. Today I took the angle pics of me on May 2nd, today...I have them on my computer and made a slide show transitioning from the first April pic to the same pose on the May pic and so on and so on for the remainder of the pics.
I cannot believe how much I actually changed from one pic to the other! It blows me away, and this is just the first month.
I swear to you...my body has changed dramatically. I wonder what I will look like at the end of this month. ;)
Yes, I think genetics play a part in lots of things, not just building muscle, but in more ways than we can probably list. ;)
6 different people on the same nutrition program and it didn't work for everyone? You don't say?
You just denied that genetics don't play a big part. You said " don't listen to this if you want that look than it's all about lifting heavy and getting the proper nutrition." The guys I mentioned all lifted heavy and got the proper nutrition and some didn't gain near the muscle that 2 of the guys did.
They had them on a weight training and nutrition program that's been proven effective for a lot of guys looking to gain bulk. They had them changing their workout every week and the end results showed how genetics play a big role.

Yes they play a role...in how long it takes you and how much different your diet has to be from others to get to where you want to go.
I'm sorry but putting everyone on the same diet, and workout program, of course isn't going to work the same amount for every single person.
First off the likely hood that they all lifted the exact same weight amounts, from the get go, is highly unlikely. Which also plays a factor.
Nutrition for each person is extremely important and pretty much impossible to figure nutrition from one person as the same for another.
There is nothing in your genetics that will keep you from adding lots of muscle to your frame if you're willing to put in the hard work and to eat right. I've never known a single person whose eaten properly and worked their butt off in the gym who couldn't gain muscle and get built.
The people who don't are the ones who quit because they don't get the results they want fast enough and without lots of hard work. It's why so many weak minded individuals turn to roids or just flat out quit all together.
But yes genetics play a role. If you're 5'6" I'm sure it's going to be very difficult, no matter how hard you workout and how well you eat, to make yourself a 280 pound muscle head. But does that mean you can't put on lots of lean muscle? Absolutely not.
Just as an example on that 6 people deal...if you put me, you, Catch, and 5Star all in a gym, doing the same workout and eating the same meal plan, we're likely all going to gain at a different rate.
Couple big reasons being that each individul will have to figure out how to make their nutrition work for them and secondly, as I mentioned above, when we're all lifting heavy it's highly unlikely we're all going to be lifting the same amount of weight. Which, obviously, factors is a great deal as well.
For example if I'm bench 250 for 3-5 reps, you're doing 280 for 3-5, Catch is doing 325 for 3-5 and 5Star is doing 310 for 3-5, we're obviously not working the same heavy load. I'm likely to put on less lean muscle over the same period of time as the rest of you because I'm simply not lifting as much weight.
Hard work, proper eating, and time and patience is what it takes to get to any muscle goal you're wanting.
Very, very, very few people have the mindset for every one of those things to get there thus you get the "Well I just can't do this because my genetics say I have to stay smaller."

Sorry I haven't been on in a few days. I've gotten the workouts in with the exception of yesterday. I'll tell ya I just flat out skipped yesterday. Wasn't feeling it and decided I needed the day off. Today I'll knock out Sculpt 3-4 again. I'm looking forward to it. Gotta make sure I get some good eating in prior to that though so that I actually have the energy to give it 110%, unlike Monday when I just flat out struggled and did poorly cause of poor eating prior to the workout. I didn't eat bad things I simply didn't eat enough to be fueled for the workout.
Anyway I hope everyone has a great start to their weekends!
And I believe I've decided that at the end of this final 30 days that I'm going to give Insanity a go. I know it's going to be super tough but I'm looking forward to the challenge. I really want to improve my cardio and amp up the fat loss so I'm looking forward to that challenge.

Genetics play a big role in building muscle like in sports some athletes are simply more gifted naturally than others. Some people don't have to work as hard to gain muscle as others because of their genetics. There's guys who can eat crap all day and still gain lean muscle. There's guys who remain skinny no matter how much junk food they eat while others will get as fat as pig. There are three classes of body types the Mesomorph, Ectomorph and the Endomorph. In short the Ectomorph doesn't put on muscle very easily and fat either and is therefore skinny the Endomorph puts on fat easily but also muscle as well.
The one that everyone wishes they were is the Mesomorph which is the best of both worlds they put on muscle easier and gain just a little bit of fat. Some people have a mix of body types for example you can be a little bit of a Mesomorph and an Ectomorph so you have to find out what kind of body type you are in order to maximize your diet and training. Unless you are a pure Mesomorph with Godlike genetics you will have disadvantages stacked against you and will have to tweak your diet training and maybe even your supplementation to overcome these challenges.
This is what they did with those 6 guys on that training program. They monitored their progress and tweaked each guys training and nutrition accordingly. Naturally they couldn't all lift the same amount of weight you have to go according to each individuals strength level the key to building muscle is to lift to failure and to have at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Some guys have genetic disadvantages and it's going to take a lot longer to reach their goals than others.
Some guys want to build huge arms but they may not be able to build them as big as someone else because they're not as genetically gifted. Some guys have naturally big calves while other guys calves remain small no matter how hard they work them. Everyone has limitations it all depends on your genetics. It's genetic limitations that cause some guys especially bodybuilders to use steroids. Bodybuilders know every trick in the book to gaining size but even they have genetic limitations and have trouble competing with guys who are more genetically gifted.

Don't listen to this.

Many people's natural metabolism prevents them from being physically able to gain large amounts of muscle, especially younger people. It's the reason why the peak body-building age is roughly 28-40 when your metaboism is gradually slowing down, give or take a few years. Even then, a very high natural metabolism makes it incredibly difficult for many people to "bulk up". A typical weight lifter can do an entire training session and only burn a few hundred calories, whereas some people burn upwards of a thousand in the same workout. Burning that many calories while lifting makes significant increases difficult and, in some cases, impossible within reasonal training methods.
Besides, studies have shown that slimmer, toned individuals with moderate amounts of muscle, high metabolisms and good cardio training are much healthier than your tpical weight lifter. Some studies have shown that above a certain muslcle to fat ratio lifespan starts to actually decrease slightly due to the large amounts of protein ingested throughout such a lifetime.

That's all fine and well. I'm not interested in being a body builder in the first place, which I already stated, so I'm not sure why that stuff was even brought up in the first place.
From what I've seen in my lifetime though I'll say this. I've never seen any person, ever, who ate the way they should for their body, and worked hard on their workouts, who simply couldn't add lean muscle. I've never seen it.
So unless I'm lucky and happen to live in an area where every single person I've ever known whose taken their weight lifting and workouts seriously, and ate right, are just extremely lucky genetically I'm going to go with the eye test as I've seen it.
Eat right, work hard, and you will see results.

I sat down on my recliner and turned on the TV...and after about 3 or 4 minutes something in my brain remembered something.
"Don't let your body control your mind, let your mind control your body" - Jimmy Johnson
So, I got up, changed into my workout gear and did my workout. And, afterwards (about 10 minutes ago) I was so glad that I did...! I even almost got through all the X bunny hops without just stepping and the arm lunges since those are the ones that dog me. The jumping jacks felt really good and the kicks and punches did not seem hard at all. The 200 abs exercises were pretty hard towards the end with all the legs in the air stuff, but I got through all that, so I feel fine. Time for a hot shower...
I think I will take the next two weeks off...unless my mind says otherwise!

That's the spirit. I'm very proud of you man. That's awesome.
Absolutely you get to that point where you just won't let yourself miss if you can help it at all.
Today I was doing well eating right for the day and was playing Battlefield 3 on my XBox. I had told myself when I got up this morning I was working out at 2pm, prior to work, no matter what.
As 2pm approached I really didn't want to quit playing BF3. I was having a blast but I refused to let myself be lazy and miss the workout and I got up and did it. I am tired now but I feel great for having done it.
I'll sleep well tonight for it. :)
Today was Sculpt 3-4. I did a pretty good job on the workout today. I wish I could have pushed more but I had this weird pain that started at my hip on my right side, and ran down my butt, to the back of my leg, whenever I was doing my pushups my heavypants or back flys.
I had never that happen during a workout before but it really hindered me on those particular moves and so I didn't hit my target reps on those today. Really iratated me.

I'm not sure, BHF, about that saying that "no pain is no gain"...but, so far since I started, I have felt little twitches, little pains, little nagging muscle twitches in various parts of my body. So, like we are being taught, "just listen to your body" and adapt. If you feel good, go harder...if not, slow it down.
Like right now, my left shoulder (not like my right one when I woke up and it was painful as hell), is pretty sore because I had surgery on my left shoulder due to a broken humerus bone ( the ball that goes into the shoulder socket broke off and I had to have it repaired..Vietnam) hurts from the top of my shoulder up the side of my left neck about a couple of inches up.
But, I attribute that small pain due to working out and recognize that that is why it might be sore...so I can handle it. So, what you described is probably your body adjusting and getting back to where it needs to be...just don't over due it...listen to our body.
One thing that I have noticed is that I'm not drinking enough water. I'm taking all my supplements, but not drinking enough water. Maybe that is why I feel these little pains?
Tomorrow I do the sculpt III-IV exercises...and, not to blow my horn, but, bro...I'm really starting to look better than I have in years, and it's only been a month and a week!
Anyway, I'm proud of you also, bro! If it wasn't for you, I would have never gotten into this program. I'll give it hell for as long as I can...unless I die of a heart attack first!!
;)

My sculpt was fun today and like I said, I did the I-II sculpt. What was interesting was that I did all the weight training with heavier weights than what I was doing when I started...I upped the weights by 10lbs and was able to do less reps but with the heavier weights and got through them all.
For the strength people...what is better? More reps with lighter weights or less with heavier weights?

If you're building strength I believe it's heavier weight for less reps. That gives you more strength to lift more.
The less weight, with more reps, is more for toning and sculpting your muscles. I am sure it also makes you stronger, in plenty of ways, but I believe it's more weight for less reps that is better for strength gains.

BHF, don't let all that hard work go to waste. I think you said that you have lost around 14 lbs so far?
Here is what I've been eating lately.
Breakfast - some oatmeal with a piece of wheat toast (with a little butter...I know that's bad, so what?) a hard boiled egg and a protein shake. Or, a 3 egg omelet (one full egg and two egg whites, with a little cheese, some diced onions and peppers) a piece of wheat toast and a protein shake. Sometimes I just eat a couple of hard boiled eggs and toast and a shake.
At lunch I just have some deli meat (turkey and roast beef - one slice each rolled up) a piece of celery smeared with Laughing Cow cheese and a protein shake. Or, maybe some tuna on wheat with celery and Cow cheese.
At supper time, since my step-daughter lives with us, they only eat that vegan crap (food made with lots of seeds and nuts, vegetables and such - some of it tastes good, but it tastes real dry for me) but, I will try some of it, otherwise I just go the deli meat routine or grill me a chicken breast with some cottage cheese and a small salad and protein drink.
Also, after workouts I eat a banana or apple slices, grapes or some other kind of fruit and a protein drink. Also, I snack on some walnut halves or almonds.
Yeah, I don't like it...! I'm hungry all the time, but, again, like they tell us, eat just enough to not be hungry, not to get full. I want to eat some fast food garbage like hell! But, I cannot do it. I want a footlong chile cheese dog so bad, or a BigMac, fries, and a chocolate shake (make my teeth sweat just thinking about it right now). :(
So far, I have become skinny but have gained 4 lbs...that does not seem much, but, again, I'm not a big guy to start with. I'm 6'1" and weighed 175 when I started, now I weigh 179 and look skinny as hell...plus I'm about twice your age! ;)
But, eat right, bro...or at least give it your best effort, I don't want you to lose all that hard work that you have been putting in.
My diet is only what I eat, so it may vary depending on what you like to eat. Maybe someone of the others can give us some different foods to eat, because, maybe like you, it gets old as hell eating all the same food...but, it does make a difference.
Good luck, bro! I'm pulling for you, You started this crap!

THank you very much.
I'm definately going to get it back into the right gear. I'm going to take the next two weeks to not only get my eating back on point but to really go all out on these P90 workouts and then it's time to start Insanity.

Good for you!
Now, my confession.:laugh2:
I broke down (after chastising you about eating):D I just had to go get something to eat. So, last night while the cooks were grinding seeds and crap...I snuck out, got into my ride and went and got me a Santa Fe burger. It is a hamburger with a fried egg, some jalapenos, and swiss cheese, and what ever else the smear on it....got small fries, too! And a small chocolate shake. It tasted so friggen good!
I did my workout this morning. I did cardio I-II again. I like the pace of it because all the moves are the same and while they are teaching, I'm already doing my thing, but faster to see if I can reach 20 before they reach 10...on my abs workout I can reach 20 right away...no hesitation because I already know the moves.
;)
Maybe next month I'll go get me another one, or something else that makes my teeth sweat.

Nothing wrong at all with a cheat meal once in a while. It's actually good for you to do that in fact.
I've also got some really exciting stuff going on now. I've always wanted to get in with a boxing trainer, for the workouts and to learn, and we found one in our town that is going to do private training with my 10 year old son, wife, and myself 3 times a week. I'm really thrilled about this because I know the cardio work you put into this is amazing.
I'm also probably going to be taking a Karate/Tae Kwon Do class on Thursday nights as well. Now since I'm limited and can only do it 1 time a week it's obvious it's not going to be something I'm doing to become a master at or anything but I've always wanted to learn some form of martial arts training, because I'm extremely interested in it, and so I'm looking forward to just getting to do something different and learn something new.
So I'm pretty happy with whats happening at the moment. On the days I won't be doing some form of training I'm of course going to continue with some Insanity workouts. I'll probably take Sunday's completely off with this particular schedule but I'm definately pumped.

I'll probably get a nasty remark from the mods for bringing up an old post!
Checking in, I took last week off and will the rest of this week. I will start again on the first of June. And it feels good...my body feels really rested.
I needed some time off because it got to the point that...this is hard!
:laugh2: Then, I thought, why am I doing this? Why am I torturing my self?
But, I'm looking for June 1st to come. And, I will be back at it for another month and half. ;)
And, you can tell BraveHeartfan I said, "Thanks, alot"!
;) ;)

Sounds great man.
I started my boxing training today. I think I'm really going to enjoy it.

If you mean that CF is like a smartcar...because the people that do them, generally, are ridiculously smug.
CF is a good workout, but it's nothing you can't do in a regular gym. And the performance is exactly the same as it is in power lifting (which I think is what the 400lb bench refers to). It's training for one specific thing, CF. It's performance for performance's sake, imo, which doesn't make it any different than bodybuilding to me.

Got my boxing training in again today. I've been really lax lately on updates and truth be told it's because I've been slacking quite a bit lately as far as working out goes. I started my boxing training last week, had two sessions, and got my third in this week. This week was the first week I could set the schedule up to do Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
That's the schedule I want for the boxing training. Now I'm about to get me a new membership, very soon, to a really quality gym in our town and I'm gonna start lifting on Tuesday, Thursday's, and Saturdays.
I'm going to start taking Sunday's off, outside of when I'm playing Flag Football. Of course on my weight lifting days I'll also being hitting some cardio work so I'll be working out, in some fashion, 6 days a week.
I've slid on the eating and sodas lately as well but I'm putting that back on track as well. Just trying to get reorganized.
With my P90 being done I realised, that last month, that I simply don't have heavy enough weights at my house for those workouts to be as effective as I'd like. I'll have my P90x workout sheets that I can use at the gym, which is a much harder workout than the P90 I did to get myself going again, but I believe before I step into that one I've decided I want to really work this excellent workout system I saw on Body Building.com from Jim Stoppani called his 12 Week Short Cut to Size.
Now out of the gate let me say that I'm not doing it because I think it's actually going to be some magical short cut or anything. It won't.
But reading all about it, and watching his videos on it, it's a dang fine put together program with a bunch of prinicples that absolutely make perfect sense.
In fact it's got quite a bit of the P90-P90x priniciples that they build upon in this program. It just looks like a quality program.
Now it's a 4 day split workout. Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday off, Thursday and Friday with weekends off.
So I'm not sure how I'm going to put the 4 in so I guess I'm likely going to have to tweak it somewhat to put the Thursday-Friday workout into 1 workout. You can't do everything from both days on 1 day, or you'd kill yourself, so I'm gonna have to tweak it some but I'll figure that part out as I go.

I have 12 stupid pounds that i've been trying to get rid of for months but I kill myself on the weekends. It's time to get rid of it so i'll report it in this thread.
Weekends are going to be the killer. If not for the weekends I would've had this 12 lbs lost 3 months ago.

DallasEast will probably blow a gasket for bringing up an old post, but...
Checking in on my P90 workouts. I'm still working out, but have changed from five days in a row to every other day. That makes me feel/heal better and faster. It will take me longer than 90 days, but, at least I will get in all the workouts.
Up until two week ago I was using different weights for the various weight training, but since then I started using the resistance bands! I have to tell you...those damn things work! It seems harder and harder everytime I use them, and it feels good, but burns at the same time. Also, I'm able to do the yoga without looking like a baby deer that is trying to stand up without losing it's balance!
I have also started to eat what I normally used to eat somewhat. I have lost so much weight that I need to not only get strong, but, now, I think I need to gain a little weight. I'm a lean person to begin with, except around my belly and chest which I lost most of my fat. I look good, but look skinny...at least to myself. However, I have good muscle tone that I have not had in a long time.
It's funny, because the first month and a half I lost some fat, but gained 4 or 5 pounds...but now I am losing weight again. I cannot understand that?
But, I'm going to keep on keeping on until I finally finish this routine.
Then, BraveHeartFan and I are going to have a big talk! (torture me like this, and I don't take this lightly BHF)!

Weekends are easily the hardest part of keeping yourself on track. I understand that fully.
