View Full Version : Favorite Round 2 Targets

By know we should all be familiar with the crop of players that could be in play for us in Round 1, but the middle rounds are really the make or break stretch that contribute to a quality draft class. Who are some of your favorite targets for the Cowboys in Round 2?

Here's a name to start it off.

Jerel Worthy | DT | Michigan St.

He's one of those players that flat out dominated at the college level when he was motivated, and that was typically against the better teams like Wisconsin. Some have labeled him as strictly a 4-3 guy, but I think he could easily transition to NT in our defense and help contribute on passing downs as an interior rusher next to Ratliff. For those of you that are looking for a physical NT that can collapse the pocket and disrupt running plays behind the LOS, this might be exactly what you're looking for. He was once thought of as a top 15 lock but with his motor running hot and cold at times this season he could find himself slipping into the 2nd Round, and possibly right into our laps.

He's #99

I don't think Worthy is a good fit in a 3-4

if we could get him I'd flip: dude is projected 20-30 in first round. No way he's still around IMO: unless we trade up(in the 2nd round). That said, I think he's a good enough football player to adapt to a 3-4: but who really knows? He played in a 4-3 and was dominant at times. I don't think he ends up with us in any way, shape or form

.......I just posted in another thread I think we should go for Jones in the 2nd round(center out of Georgia: might be able to trade down to get him too) That's assuming we get Grubbs in free agency and take Cox in the first round....just a thought.

We do so many different things on defense that I'm pretty sure Rob would find a place for someone like Worthy.

Who do you like in Round 2?

You know, I do think Worthy is a better fit for a 43, but I agree with you that he could fit into our 34 at NT because of the way we play it. Let's be real, what made/makes Ratliff special as a NT is the fact he can get pressure up the middle and put pressure on the QB (or at least he used to). Worthy is one of the best penetrating defensive linemen in the entire draft.

I'd like that pick, I thought WVU was a terrible fit for Bruce's talents but he still made it work. Natural pass rusher for sure.

....what did this guy look like against USC and Oregon? I honestly haven't watched any tape on him, but in this clip he's pretty active, but totally gassed at the end of the game. Would middle of the 2nd round be considered a reach for him?

Favorite 2nd round types are Brandon Boykin, Chase Minnifield, Brock Osweiler, and Markelle Martin (most likely a late 2nd or 3rd rounder).

Bruce Irvin would be very nice at 45.

Don't see it from this. Little push, gets tied up too much, no burst, not real aware of the ball at times, leverage not good too often. Big guy though.

The video was just the first one I found on youtube. I realize it's only Utah.

I've heard the criticisms. I'd still be willing to role the dice on Ta'amu in the 2nd round. He's a pretty athletic big man, a natural NT and he makes Ratliff better instantly by moving him to DE.

He seems to be in everyone's 2nd round, so I don't think he'd be a reach. He's not my only consideration at 45 though. When the actual draft takes place I guarantee you there will be a player or players available at that pick that I never thought would be there and one of those will be my actual hope at that time.

I agree, he also takes off ways to many plays, he flashes but then goes away for far to long. I like Reyes in round two for DE.

Gimmie Bruce Irvin in the 2nd round....

I like Irvin, the defense he played in did not help him. The only problem I see when watching him play, was that when he rushes he run straight up field to far down field. I don't see many bull rush, or inside moves. He just tries to out run the OT and go around which drives him to far down the field.
He will have to work on that, maybe Ware could show him some moves. He has great talent, quickness, and potential though.
He wouldn't be my first pick at 45 but I wouldn't be upset with the pick.

Naturally, it will depend somewhat on what the Boys do in free agency, and especially by what they do in the first round... but here's a list of 7 players I'd consider:

Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin... unless the Boys draft David DeCastro or Cordy Glenn in the first...

Trumaine Johnson, CB/FS, Montana... unless the Boys go DB in the first, or go heavily DB in free agency...

Shea McClellin, OLB, Boise State... unless the Boys go with an OLB pass rusher in the first (which wouldn't surprise me at all)...

The following players might be available later in the 2nd round, after a small trade down:

Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State... again, he's off the board if DeCastro or Glenn are picked in the first...

Billy Winn, DE, Boise State... looks like a natural 3-4 DE to me...

George Iloka, FS, Boise State... I like this kid, think he'd solve some of our problems at safety...

LaMichael James, RB, Oregon... honestly, this would be a long shot, but he would bring another dimension to the offense and to the return game...

Should be interesting and it will depend on who is on the board.

I think it will be a CB, OG or OLB but depends on what we do in the first round and who is still on the board.

I like the following prospects:

Osmele
Silatolu
Bruce Irvin
Shea McClellin
Jake Bequette
Chase Minnifield

Depends on how the rest of the off season goes obviously but.....Irvin, Boykin, Hosely, Zeitler, Osemele, or Reyes. A lot of talent in the 2nd round, makes trading back 6-7 spots more appealing.

It also depends on who is actually there. I don't know about you, but I have no ability to accurately project every pick in the first round. There are always curveballs. Berman "whoooooa!" picks.

There might be a player at 45 than you thought was going off the board in the late 1st, so you didn't even include him in this thread assuming he wasn't an option.

Cam Johnson DE/OLB Virginia
Orson Charles TE Georgia
Kendall Reyes DT Connecticut
Trumaine Johnson CB Montana

I like Branch, I think he's going under rated in terms of pass rushers in this draft. Cam Johnson is too much of a tweener for the 3-4 in my opinion. He would need 10-15 lbs to be a DE, because I don't think he's athletic enough for OLB. Like everyone else, but wouldnt draft a TE in round 2. Not this year.

Huge Bruce Irvin fan. But it looks like he may sneak into the 1st round right now. He gains a few more pounds and sub 4.5 40 at his pro day, he could be Demarcus Ware-like in his ascension up the draft boards.
