Cowboys have shown interest in re-signing Keith Brooking
By Tim MacMahon
Don’t count out Keith Brooking’s return to the Cowboys.
The 36-year-old linebacker said on CBS 11’s The Score that the Cowboys have expressed interest in re-signing him.
“I don’t think Jerry Jones is a liar,” Brooking joked. “I know Jason Garrett is not, but they could have said that just to make my agent feel better.”

Of course. Spencer is guaranteed to come back and now it's only a matter of time before Brooking and Newman are extended too. They love these guys...they would NEVER let them go

if so it would have to be on a small contract and I would make him earn the roster spot. I like him but his age has caught up to him.

He was cheap when we signed him in 2009. He ought to be even cheaper now.

He would be paid at least vet minimum. I would also say signing and remaining on the team past training camp is not the same.

That's what I think as well.
I'd prefer to get a younger player there.

In normal circumstances, I would like the team to go with more youth. But when your two likely starting LBs are very young and inexperienced, it doesn't hurt to have a older veteran who knows the ropes on the sidelines...
And it's not like there shouldn't be more than enough room for another younger ILB. I think Brooking is just a safe stopgap.

I agree. I have no issue with him being part of the 80 players brought to camp and if he can earn a spot great but I would not hand him a spot.
I would also say that if the contract offer is vet minimum then it would not prevent the Cowboys from finding depth behind Lee and Carter, right now we have none. If anything I would see this as a safety net move by the Cowboys.

That's right. If he earns the spot, that's fine. And it wouldn't prevent the team from getting another vet in FA if the opportunity presented itself or getting lucky in the Draft.
I would give a similar type of contract to Holland, in fact.
It provides the team with some cheap insurance.

The difference would be that Holland actually played pretty well last year.
People read stuff like this and still have faith in those running the team?:laugh2:

What is the big deal in the report of "shown interest"?
Like he said, probably just to make him feel good and showing respect.
People read too much into anything reported, even rumors.
Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to stop the agenda train, continue sir.

The guy has been DONE for two years, torched on the pass, a step slow on the run. If the agenda is winning, guilty as charged. The whole thing is laughable from them even having the slightest interest to anybody defending it.

No I think some read it and then look at the overall situation at hand. If Dallas lets james and brooking go then we have Lee and Carter whom I would expect will start then what? Who provides backup to these guys or do we expected them to play every single snap of 2012 season? I hope we can find some guys to work as backup to Lee and Carter and if bringing Brooking back to camp gives the Cowboys a safety net the great. I don't think brooking will be ensure a spot on the final roster

Exactly. These users who scream just to scream forget that we do need some sort of backups for the starters.
The circus rolls on here at CBZ.

Hey I hope we do find either vet help or late rd help at ILB who can provide backup and we can move on from Brooking but I think you have to account for what if we can't find adequate backup.

A backup needs to be able to contribute on special teams. Brooking? Not so much. Gimme a younger player to take that spot. He probably can't do worse than Brooking on defense either. The man needs to retire...I have a sick feeling that as long as he wants to play, the door will be open for him at Valley Ranch, whether it's just 1 more year or 2-3 years. He's got that Favre in him

The only thing worse than an over the hill rock star is an over the hill athlete who cant see what is painfully obvious to everybody else.

I catch enough heat when I'm wrong that I'm going to take this opportunity and say you could have heard this weeks ago in my pre draft/FA thread.
It's time to move on......
We dont need him .....not as a starter or backup.......he is done....
We would be stupid to keep him IMHO

I don't see anything wrong with that.

Brooking going to camp and possiably making the roster is the least of my concerns.

I was thinking, coming back as a assistant coach,or player coach if they still do that like Dan Reeves did.I have no problem with him coaching.

Broken down veterans and underachievers come on down! You're the next contestants on who wants a repeat of last year!

At the vet min there is no guarantee he'd make the team.
He'd basically be insurance if anyone we acquire doesn't pan out.

Brooking is old and didn't contribute **** last season. If you can't see that, then maybe it's YOU that has the agenda.

Don't get your panties in a wad. Newman is gone. If Brooking comes back, it will be in a back up role. Even he knows that. Wherever he went, it would have been a back up role. He is a hard worker and a leader. It's not that bad of an idea.
Carter will get every opportunity to start. Just like Lee when he took over for Brooking. We need depth.

Sure. Bring back the band. I just can't get enough of the same tune they've been playing for all these years.
This will be spun into how he's a player coach. A veteran leader.
Last I checked we already have a LB coach and that roster spot should go to someone with the ability to actually play in the league going forward.

The thing is, we need a third ILB to play full time in the event of an injury to a starter. Ideally, that person has veteran experience, but I'm not sure Brooking's got enough speed left to play anything more than in a few sub packages anymore. I know I"m not comfortable with him as a long-term injury replacement for two guys with a history of missing time. And if he's not the third ILB, he might as well make way for a young player b/c he becomes a progress stopper at that point.
I think a player like Connor makes more sense for us at this juncture, given that we know very little about how Carter is going to end up performing.

I'm not sure which news is worse....that we are franchising spencer or that we are considering bringing back brooking. look, both are great guys, but this isn't sho'friends, it's sho'businees. both of these guys represent the status quo of mediocrity. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Brooking is slow and old, and spencer isn't worth anywhere near what we have decided to pay him. I'm starting to agree with the "afraid of the unknown" philosophy that has been mentioned in recent days. Personally, Id rather have two hungry unproven rookies over either one of them. I'd rather take my chances with a young kid than keep settling for average. Such nonsense. Where is the improvement ....or even, the ATTEMPT at improvement, in these moves? Very frustrating day as a fan today.

unfortunately we have only one franchise tag
if we had 2, we could have franchised brooking as well and not risked losing him ;)
now, nothing is guaranteed
