It's really the only move possible. Who replaces him if he's not tagged? BTW, Spencer's not as bad as people think. He drops into coverage alot of the time, so it's difficult to judge him compared to Ware.

Only hope now is that they get the long-term deal done soon.
We really do not have the cap cash to set aside 9 mil for Spencer. That buys two high quality free agents. We could get starting OG and FS for that 9 million in cap cost in 2012.

We had to, and if you want to know why, look no further than the failed 2009 draft. When you have 12 picks and 9 of them aren't on the team 2 years later and not a single one is a starter, you better get ready to write some fat checks.

The key part of the equation you're ignoring is, who are you going to replace Spencer with, and how much does that guy cost? Or, alternatively, how much are you going to spend on Spencer's long-term deal? Either way you play it, that 9 million doesn't all go to an OG and a FS -- most of it would have to go to an OLB unless you want our pass rush to be even worse.

Cowboys though are talking extending the contract of Romo which would free up more cash on this years cap. Only downside with Spencer on a longer term deal it would be putting off getting a top prospect at OLB in the long term.

Not neccessairly the case. per Twitter, Todd Archer stated, it wouldn't be difficult to rework some of the Cowboy's contracts to create more cap space.

Ditto. I just don't understand this move. Even before this was announced, this is the first time in 20 years I am not excited about the new NFL season. I'm so sick of being "also ran's".

is a mistake.
Franchising someone because of the " who is going to replace him ? " reason as oppossed to " because he's one of the best at his position " shows a huge lack of vision, absolutely NO confidence in the scouting dpt and/or coaching staff, and a sign of a desperate front office that has ZERO ideas on how to address with this particular issue. They're taking the incompetent's way out. They're timid and they're scared, and that's not a good sign of things to come. And if it's Rob Ryan who's behind this, then he should not be given that much power.
Spencer might have a break out year ( how long have we been waiting for that to happen, again ? ) or he might just be his usual average self, but either way he's not at the level of a franchise tag..

Of course he's replaceable. Just not for free. And the better the replacement, the more expensive.

It is a mistake, if they plan on paying him $9 million for 1 year. If they just use the franchise tag to ensure that he doesn't sign elsewhere, and negotiate a long term deal with Spencer then it is not a mistake.
As has been pointed out before, Spencer is #4 in sacks by SOLB's in the league. And he is one of the best if not the best SOLB's in the league in stopping the run. Is he a great player, no he is not. But he certainly is not just some average player like many on here try and make him out to be. He is a very good OLB, who certainly is deserving of a contract extension.
