The Cowboys haven't restructured any contracts, according to multiple sources. But they can create salary cap space by re-doing the deals of several players.
The Cowboys are roughly $12.5 million under the salary cap, but that will get eaten up quickly with new contracts.
It's written in wide receiver Dez Bryant's contract that the Cowboys can move his $1.4 million roster bonus into a signing bonus to create $957,000 of cap space. The Cowboys have done this in the past with several players.

And that article doesn't even include Ware and Romo.
I think we can do quite a bit more this FA than we've done in several years.

let me do math. 12 under the cap plus 8 in restructing plus 6 million in cutting newman plus another 1 million in cutting burhler equals 27 million. Plus some other moves like Romo signing an extension.

True. For argument sake lets say Spencer is given the same deal Brooks got in SF
Brooks base this year is 750,000 his cap charge is 2.8 mill. That would be 6 mill freed up

Add to that the cap likely goes up next year by $10M, creating more space under contracts that we add this off-season.
If players want to play here this year, there's no reason we can't sign them.

We could do even more if we didn't have 9 million tied up to Mr. Marginal Anthony Spencer.

Romo restructured last season. The only way to further it would be to give him his extension now and back-load that.

He'll likely be extended, reducing the cap hit significantly.
But don't let me get in the way of your vigorous pushing of agenda.

That's not a guarantee. Tag hasn't been signed yet and we can rescind it especially if we land Mario.
Could do a contract extension too for much less than 8.8 but you can keep complaining about it.

Hey, extending mediocrity over multiple years. That's a great solution.
I'll be over here looking for an upgrade.

While I agree, he hasn't even signed it yet and there is fear (by some) that he might not sign it.

Just placing it on him is bad enough. It means the team covets the player. Why, I don't know.
I don't want him back under any contract because I want to see our defense be threatening from both sides. I don't like to see us lining up and it being so obvious which side the protection needs to be rolled to.
DeMarcus Ware's not a machine. He's not going to keep cranking out 20 sack seasons. It sure would be nice to give him a better compliment than Anthony Spencer going forward.

Sadly, this D is so far off from being playoff ready, we may just have to hang on to even decent players for the time being.
