A Cowboys' scheme to gain a financial edge has blown up and will compromise the team's ability to upgrade its roster over the next two seasons.
It also gives 28 teams an unexpected advantage over the Cowboys in the pursuit of free agents.
The NFL has stripped the Cowboys of $10 million in salary cap room for how it structured Miles Austin's contract extension a year-and-a-half ago, sources said. Washington was docked $36 million for comparable maneuvers with its players. Both teams can divide the hit over the next two seasons however they see fit.
