It's about freakin time. I can see holding on to a potentially great qb, wr, rb... or any other position, but for a kicker, such a waste of a roster space. Glad JJ finally got the message although without the fine, I doubt he would have seen the light. Oh well...

Correction.
David Buehler doesn't get cut...rather, he tells the team he no longer needs its services.

The Cowboys announced (http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/nick_eatman.cfm?plckController=Blog&plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&userid=1990bfd1-c6a9-4728-af3f-a229e85b981c&plckPostId=Blog%3a1990bfd1-c6a9-4728-af3f-a229e85b981cPost%3a037a24b9-6d83-45b4-8844-1187891d6bcf&plckScript=blogScript&plckElementId=blogDest) they have parted ways with kicker David Buehler in a move that will save the club about $1.6 million on the 2012 salary cap.
Buehler, who suffered both hip and groin injuries last year, only played in four games last season. He was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 10 and underwent hip surgery before the end of the regular season.
Buehler was drafted in the fifth round in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Nick Eatman @nickeatman
PK David Buehler has been released by the Cowboys to save about $1.6 million on the cap.
Cutting Buehler doesn't save $1.6 million. We save his $1.26 million base salary, but we have to add another player's base salary ($390,000) to our top 51. The net cap savings, then, is $870,000.
You have to keep the Top 51 Rule in mind anytime we add or subtract a player during the offseason. Right now, the base salaries for the bottom few players are each $390,000, so if we add a player, the amount of cap room that we lose is equal to that player's cap number MINUS $390,000. Likewise, the cap room that we gain by cutting a player is equal to that player's base salary MINUS $390,000. After we add a handful of players to our Top 51, the base salaries of the bottom players in our Top 51 will be $465,000, so that will be the number to use.

You are correct (but June 2, not June 1).
It wouldn't surprise me, however, if we cut him without designating him a June 2 cut. The difference in cap savings would be $2 million (that amount would hit next year instead of this year), but we'd get NO cap savings from it until June 2. So the question is whether we want $3.626 million of cap room right now or $5.626 million (or so) in June? Adding that much cap room in June doesn't do us a lot of good unless we expect other teams to make some cuts then (which rarely happens anymore) or if we plan on using cap room to extend contracts later this season. That's way more cap room than we would need to sign all of our rookies (we'll need less than $2 million), and most of the free-agent pool will be dried up by the time we gain that cap room.
Personally, I'd rather get the $3.626 million now so we can use it. There are plenty of other ways to open up another $2 million later.

He will. I think he'll be something other than a kick off specialist. This will be his wake up call. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in Dallas if they ever change the kickoff rule back to the way it once was.

It usually takes a few years for kickers to adjust to the league.

Yeah. I like The Buehler alot, but I'd have still cut him.
However, I might offer him a min salary contract to make it as a special teamer. I bet he'd be a great gunner.

Only a year too late.
Pretty much.
Laurent Robinson diamonds in the rough are rare to find at the juncture Dallas found him.
Imagine if Dallas would have keep churning that last spot and ended up with a guy that was just half as good as Laurent that played on defense.
He'd have been like the 4th best guy on the D.

But, but, but what about the decided advantage Beuhler gave us on kickoffs? Jerry said it was crucial that we carried two kickers.
Nevermind that fact that just about every kicker in the league was putting the ball into the end zone with the new rules.
What are we going to do now?

Yes, oh well.
Orie Lemon or a developmental DB could of helped this squad in 2011, at least on STs.
Sometimes it's the little things that matter the most, you can't measure that.
Jerry Jones is a proven loser in the NFL.

Well, the guy was drafted under the old rules so the advantage would have been there
I also think Jerry got gun shy on firing kickers too quickly after seeing a couple he let go have some decent years in 2010. So he held Buehler longer than he should have for that reason.
Once into the season I think they kind of did David a favor by holding onto him when it was obvious that Bailey wasn't going to give the job back on FGs and that Bailey's KOs were more than good enough with the rule change.
I think he did this because David's GF had an aneurysm or something to that extent around midseason and it occurred a short while after giving birth.
I'm not sure how David's contract would have looked but I think Jerry and company made a call that by the time Bailey had fully emerged, a reasonable replacement for Buehler's roster spot wouldn't really pan out. I don't agree with this because nobody saw Robinson panning out so you never know what is going to happen.
I also think that Jerry wanted to give Buehler an opportunity to show off his leg for the upcoming offseason and then Buehler went to IR.
And I think Jerry had a little twinkle in his eye for the kid for whatever reason. Kicking the hell out of the ball is all he was ever going to do so I don't know why they would view him as some utility player who could potentially do a little bit of everything. And even if they could get him to be a good punt coverage guy, what roster spot does that open up? One of the few given to the WRs?
Never really made sense, IMO.
In short, I think they took the guy at the wrong time, felt compelled to keep him because of previous K cuts and then extended him some leniency when his girlfriend had health problems to not only keep him at ease while caring for a newborn but also to potentially find a spot somewhere else.
I didn't agree with his roster spot before the season, during or after but I can agree with Jerry's intention and good will at a time when:
The team was sitting almost halfway through the season and probably couldn't have found a diamond like Robinson even though I wish they would have tried.
The guy's entire life as he knew it was up in the air.
We can say what we want about Jerry but he treats his players right and is very loyal to them, sometimes to a fault.
