RVING, Texas - While Kyle Orton might be the biggest name linked to the Cowboys on Wednesday, and cornerback Brandon Carr could potentially sign for the biggest contract, the biggest player added to the mix here in free agency could be guard Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Terms of the deal have not been announced. Bernadeau came into Dallas Tuesday night to meet with club officials and the coaching staff. He remains at Valley Ranch on Wednesday and has been touring the facility, alongside new offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

The four-year veteran has been primarily a backup with the Panthers but does have 20 career starts under his belt, including 12 in 2010. Bernadeau played in 15 games last season for Carolina, with only one start.

Good depth signing here. Young guy with some experience. Has experience as G and OT in college.

The scarcastic side of me says that when we sign him, he becomes the second best OG on the team.

And Phil Costa has how many starts at center?

Kind of reminds me of the Columbo deal from Chicago. This guy could pan out.

We need youth and that's what were getting.

Callahan may know a thing or two about this kid, no?

Columbo was a first round pick that was hurt his rookie year. The Cowboys rehabbed him for a season. I need to read more on this fellow to see if he is as good a pick up as Columbo.

doesn't mean he sucks...willing to keep an open mind. Definately a depth signing: just trying to get better: anyone have some concrete info. on this young man? Thanks in advance....

My guess is that he's just a depth signing -- I don't think he was a priority. He likely has the same agent as another player who we were negotiating with.

Of course, if we find out he got 5 years for 20 mill then we'll know different.

Training camp foder?

You don't sign free agents as training camp fodder. LMAO.

The Panthers tried signing him as their starting RG and he decided to check out the market. He has a positive rating on profootballfocus. If signed for a cheap deal, it's a very smart move.

This is a highlight of DeAngelo and Stewart but you can see Bernadeau in some of those runs. He wears #73.

Here is one with him as a focus.....lol.

While I could easily be wrong, I imagine this guy is supposed to be a starter. At the very least he adds significant competitor at G.

Good depth signing. Should not be looked at as a starter. Will battle it out in camp with a rookie, Arkin, and Nagy

Bernadeau has started 20 of the 47 games he's played...

He seems to fit the mould of smaller OL with good mobility.

He ran a 5.25 40 but a 4.56 short shuttle and a 28 vertical with 9-1 broad jump. He measured in at 6-3.5 298 pounds at his pro day in 2008.

He also fits some of our other recent draft molds as he was a former college team captain.

Played in 14 games last year..

Started 1.

We'll see how he does, but not expecting much.

Something in me doubts the Cowboys would pay him, in their words, a starter's salary if they really thought he'd end up being merely a backup. Callahan or somebody within the staff must surely have seen starting potential in this guy, just like Carolina finally did before Bernadeau decided to test the market. If nothing else, he'll, at the very least, provide some stiff competition for the youngsters and challenge for a starting role. He also fits the mold for JG's more mobile linemen.

Is that why he started 1 game for them last year?

How do you play in 15 games but not start, sounds like Carolina was trying to hide somebody.

Some get back for Matt Moore?

Bernadeau has started 20 of the 47 games he's played...

The one season where he made most of his starts he was benched after week 5 and only went back to a start because of injury.

I'm not exactly thrilled with this signing. Would be okay depth and maybe he can develop a bit but I'd be hard pressed to believe the guy will go from warm body in Carolina to adequate starter in Dallas in an offseason.

Sounds like he was on a special teams unit to me.

He played 123 snaps on offense and 122 snaps on special teams last season. That's almost two games' worth of snaps on offense and a little more than one-fourth of the Panthers' special-teams snaps.
