Then you'd have Lee, Carter, Connor, and possibly James brought back for depth?

I think the Cowboys want Lee to take over the locker room this year, that will be difficult for him to do if James is still here...

Even if they have to platoon for awhile Connor run downs and Carter passing situations, until Carter hopefully takes over.
Plus you need a third guy to play 15 to 20 snaps a game from a freshness standpoint any way.
Connor a very solid run defender.

Don't know much about him, but he comes from two teams (Penn state and Carolina) that are notorious for having great linebackers. He's young and has NFL experience.
Based on those two things alone, seems like he would be an upgrade, although maybe not a permanent solution.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if James were brought back at or near the vet minimum to be that 4th 15-20 snap guy. The youth movement is fully underway - we've only got about 5 guys at 30, 31 so having one more aging vet for one more season won't do any harm. I think B James is a good lockerroom guy. He volunteered to play STs as well last season to help out the team.
I would still prefer to go younger, though, if we can. If we pick up Connor and draft 1 ILB, that will give us 4. And we can stash 1 on the PS.

Think Bradie James. 2 down linebacker.
From ESPN
"Connor has been a mixed bag as he has shown flashes of being an excellent run-stopper between the tackles but has struggled to play a full season. He is a tough, hard-nosed linebacker that is quick to locate the level of the ball and pull the trigger while taking good angles to get there. He can deliver a heavy blow when tackling head-on and is a strong wrap-up tackler from the angles but he's a bit stiff in the hips and can be shaken in the open field. He is more effective as a run-stopper than when playing in space for coverage. He can settle in the short zones and reads the quarterback well to get a jump on the ball."

Garrett wants competition at every spot. If we don't get another ILB, there won't be much if any competition for Carter... not to mention that all our proverbial eggs will be in one basket.
Bring in Conner and let Carter and him fight it out for the starting spot and the loser will be a still effective situational player.

The best part of all this activity the past couple days is that it really proves that Garrett has a plan to put together a roster from top to bottom like he has in his mind and that they are aggressively overhauling the roster from top to bottom.
He can't do it all in one off-season but it's obvious every position has been evaluated and Jerry and Stephen are doing everything they can to work with Garrett to get him the talent we need to compete for a championship.
For all the criticism we have for Jerry, they all deserve credit for having a plan and going after it.

He has youth on his side, something that is long gone for Bradie. Penn State has a good pedigree of linebackers, and we need linebackers. It's a good fit. I don't want to see both James and Brooking back next year. One or the other, but not both.

thats big money in Hawthorne compared to Connor.
Connor would be ideal for this team. Can replace Brooking and/or Bradie, not complain about playing time and be steady for the next 4 years.
Carter is the deafcto starter and i think can be every bit as good as lee is showing, but with better speed.

Connor would be ideal for this team. Can replace Brooking and/or Bradie, not complain about playing time and be steady for the next 4 years.
Carter is the deafcto starter and i think can be every bit as good as lee is showing, but with better speed.
I figured as much with money. I haven't heard his name out there so I wasn't sure what kind of offers he was getting. Just as long as we keep getting younger, I trust the FO moves.

Sure it has, our owner is hired and who is putting up with our sorry GM. One start of a decent off season can't erase the past 16 years. String a few in a row and start showing it on the field the we will talk decent owner and GM.

The Cowboys visited with Carolina free agent linebacker Dan Connor on Wednesday and those talks will continue today, coach Jason Garrett said.
"We're excited to have Dan Connor in, a Penn State guy, drafted by Carolina. He right kind of guy, a very productive player for them, a very productive player in college," Garrett said. "We've had a good visit with him so far and we'll get the chance to visit with him more today and just see where we are and where he is and continue along with this process."

It's time like this that make me realize how little I know about players. Is Dan Connor elite at his position? Forgive me for not watching any Panthers games.

Not elite. Think solid starter. Maybe a notch below Sean Lee and more of a run stuffing ILB than a coverage ILB. But he's darn good at stuffing the run and looks to bust the LOS rather than sit back and let the play come to him. He's also another PSU LB product and fits the mold well. Smart, instinctive, tough, hard worker, etc.. would love to have him here.

Just saw a tweet that Sean and Carter just got done working out together. Im sure he has something to do with bringing Connor in though, no doubt.

I just hope we don't have to take him in the 3rd after his good combine. I know they won't do it, but I wish Vontaze Burfict wasn't batsh** crazy so we could take him to stop the inevitable fall.
I do love me some Carder. I don't like all of the arm bands that he wears though.
