The Cowboys have signed Dan Connor to a two-year deal. He will compete with Bruce Carter for the starting inside linebacker job beside Sean Lee.
The Cowboys believe in Carter, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said recently, but they needed insurance in case Carter isn't ready to ascend to the starting job.
"We've had some veteran inside linebackers who have been here for a little while now, and I'm talking about Bradie James and Keith Brooking. Both those guys are free agents," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "We're excited about the progress that Sean Lee has made. He had an outstanding year last year. And really we're excited about the progress that Bruce Carter made as a football player, coming back from that injury and making a contribution to our team, mostly on special teams. He played a little bit more on third down in passing situations and didn't play quite as much on first and second down with those veteran players available to us last year. But we're excited to the way he progressed. We took him in the second round last year, and we feel like he has a great future. Having said that, we need more players in there."
