Brodney Pool runs down field after intercepting a pass against the Steelers in the 2011 AFC Championship game.

When the Cowboys' interest in Brodney Pool first became public, many a Cowboys fan quickly scrambled to look up Pool's Pro Football Focus grades for last year and the year before. There was much consternation when, at first glance, Pool's grades for the previous two regular seasons didn't turn out to be all that exciting:

Pool is just ok. No need to have high expectations with him. If he's better than avg we should be thrilled.

i really hope that we can draft a safety and that church is better then pool. i really am not to confident in pool. i saw him get beat plenty of times down the middle of the field in the few games i watched the jets last year.

I think our safety situation is probably not a lot better this year. Maybe we can find a S in the draft.

Sounds like this is the first safety we've had in years with some actual ball skills. I'm ok with that. I'd still like to draft one fairly high this year.

Roy Williams was the run stopper, pass rusher who couldn't cover his own grandma in the pass game.
The one thing we've complained about most is safeties who don't make plays on the ball and can't cover. Now we get a guy who has been highly rated among safeties in the league for just that, but we're going to call him just a guy because he isn't a big run-stopper or pass rusher? crazy.
I'll bet he's easily going to be the best cover-safety we've had here in quite a few years...let Sensabaugh play the box and TE's...he's good at that.
Even if we find another safety who's so so at everything, it will pay huge dividends to have a nickel safety who can actually play center field.
I'm excited about the guy.

Pool is a decent player on a 1 year deal. This is a short term fix not a long term solution.
Not much in FA at safety that would be worth a longer term contract.
Draft you have Barron outside of him not much but at least by getting Pool the Cowboys do not have to reach for a safety.
If one is there they think can be a longer term solution take him if not then at least the position is being filled by a decent player with experiance.

Pool is a bit player, not a super star but he could be a capable starter.
A solid unit doesn't need superstars, just team players.
Dallas won a Super Bowl starting second year man and 11th round pick Larry Brown and rotating Isaac Holt and rookie Kevin Smith at corner, while switching out Ray Horton and James Washington at Free safety, the lone star on the secondary being AllPro Thomas Everett at strong safety, and he joined the team late.
