Maybe they should have called it the Kindle Fire? :laugh2:

According to early user reports, the new iPad may be prone to becoming physically warm during use, especially in the lower left-hand corner when holding the iPad upright in portrait mode. The question of whether the iPad has a temperature problem has been asked on both the Apple Discussion Boards (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17892192#17892192) and in the MacRumors forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1341985), and articles on CNET (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-57399443-64/does-the-new-ipad-have-a-heat-problem/), The Next Web (http://thenextweb.com/apple/2010/04/03/ipad-sun-rethink/?awesm=tnw.to_15tqf&utm_medium=tnw.to-other&utm_source=direct-tnw.to&utm_content=twitter-publisher-other)and Gizmodo have all brought unwanted attention to the new iPad's heat.

Typical of the complaints (via the Apple Discussion Boards (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17892192#17892192)):

Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2. Do you think it's harmless or .... ? My 64gb, wifi/LTE new ipad is 96.8 degrees currently (and must have crafty artificial intelligence because it's as if it KNEW I'd brought out my laser temperature scanner and cooled down for reading). It has been very hot to hold, lower left side, since first use. I'll continue to monitor with scanner...Mine is a 64 with WIFi and LTE - LTE not hooked up yet - got hot enogh that I measured with infared thermometer and it was 117 degree after 10 minutes - my little boy says its too hot to hold - (Great !) but seriously its not comfortable and I will be returning to the store.http://www.cnbc.com/id/46786775

I wonder how they miss something like that during testing?

Hardly. :)

Im just putting the upcoming problem out there for folks who are looking to upgrade ipads. It's def something to talk to the store about when you go in.

Personally...in these situations I wait until either its clear its a problem and the mfgr states it so or its made clear that this is just an anomaly.

For example an antennae issue on say.... a cell phone.

I can't imagine they didn't know about it. The heat is surely just a design flaw. I'm guessing they had a choice. Start over, or release what they had. They released it.

They definitely wouldn't be the first company to do that. There are numerous laptops out there that get hotter than hell when you use them.

My wife's old laptop she couldn't put on her lap. She had to have a board or something to put it on while sitting on the couch using it. It never burned up or anything, but it would get way over 100 degrees on the bottom.

That's not a flaw. It's a new heater app so you won't get cold while using it. Apple doesn't make anything with flaw. :D

MBPs can get hot too, that's probably the biggest complaint about them.

I've had the transformer prime since Christmas and recommend anybody that is considering an ipad to look at this one closely first.

I really want one of these, but my only issue right now is I would prefer that it support svn better and support WingIDE Pro. This is only because I can have a real keyboard on it. If it supports that, then I could do some development on it too.

So that makes me lean towards an actual laptop instead. Damn shame too!

I am 100% serious about this, you can google it. Yahoo had a story on their main page last year saying doctors are concerned laptops and tablets are too hot for men to have on their laps. They routinely get to a temperature that may literally cook your testicles and render you unable to have children.
So if these ipads are really 100+ degrees,I am sure that could be a huge lawsuit waiting to happen.

I am using the new iPad right now in fact. Haven't experienced any heat issues yet. Been on it almost all day too. Wonder if there is a small sample that had issues and now all panic is setting in?

Now having said all of that if It is true then Apple missed an opportunity and should have launched at Christmas time and included a mug and marshmallows and used the back to do s'mores.
