View Full Version : Do we even have a 4th CB on the roster?

Anybody?
Clearly we have to add depth at this position..as of right now if anybody gets hurt, we have nobody that can fill in..
Specifically speaking, we need a nickel CB..neither Carr nor Jenkins can play inside. Thus, if Scandy goes down, we are completely screwed. Whereas, if Carr or Jenkins goes down, we do know Scandy can play outside.
Brandon Boykin at 45
Who are some other CBs who can play inside in this draft?

2nd round pick on a 4th CB? Seems a bit early if you ask me. I'd rather sign a vet cut by another team then use a pick that high on a 4th CB.

The roster move that irritated me the most last year was the release of Josh Thomas. If Alan Ball and Frank Walker are your 4th and 5th CBs, then you have no chance to develop a player with high upside.
Playing inside CB is about lateral agility and explosion out of the backpedal, IMO.
In the draft I think Josh Robinson can play inside or outside. He has excellent agility being 1st in the Cone drill and 3rd in the SS at the combine. He is also explosive with a 4.33 forty and a 38.5" vertical. He has good, not great size at 5'10-1/4", 199 pounds.

Do we have a 3rd OT? A 3rd OG? A 3rd QB? A 2nd TE? A 2nd NT? A 4th OLB? A 3rd S?

Do you want to compare the # of snaps our 4th Cb saw last year vs these positions?
I didn't think so
Listen Gabe, we know you don't like CBs.. We get it

We still have Mario Butler on the roster, who I thought had a better pre-season than Josh Thomas last year. Athletically, he is a bit challenged though.

Well there you're talking about injury.
But I'd bet that 2nd TE would see the field more than a 4th corner would without an injury. Probably the backup NT too.
But hey, continue to be fixated on positions that don't matter.

We actually have bodies at NT and TE
Brent
Lissemore
Phillips
We don't have ANYBODY at CB

I think we definitely have to take a cb in the 1st 4 rounds given Jenkins contract situation. I like Boykin, Hosely, Minnifield, or Norman in the 3rd round.

I wouldn't be surprised if the club drafted 2 corners... Probably like 4th & 6th rounds.

Good question.
3rd OT - Parnell. I like this player.
3rd OG - They have multiple 3rd OGs, the question is 1st and 2nd OG.
2nd TE - They will probably draft one. Phillips is a good backup to Witten, but not really a replacement for MartyB as a blocker.
With all of the athletic OLinemen on the team, it seems that one should be able to function as the blocking TE.
2nd NT - Lissemore and Brent.
4th OLB - Highly likely that they draft one. Also, Alex Albright is underrated, IMO.
3rd S - Maybe Church. Mana Silva has the athletic ability and had 14 interceptions in college. Justin Taplin-Ross appears to have the size and athletic ability.

Mario Butler?
Butler is longshot at CB due to limited athleticism.
His measureables are suspect even as a Safety. For reference here are his measureables compared to Gerald Sensabaugh:
Bulter
Height: 6001
Weight: 182
40 Yrd Dash: 4.65
Vertical Jump: 30 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'00"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.37
3-Cone Drill: 7.09
Sensabaugh
Height: 6004
Weight: 214
40 Yrd Dash: 4.44
Vertical Jump: 46
Broad Jump: 11'01"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 3.98
3-Cone Drill: 6.80

Butler has been hangin around for a couple years now.
I don't see him being worthy of the final roster.
The team needs a couple more corners.

Then use the later rounds or UDFA for such a bit player. You can even find a guy after cuts.
I'm totally against it unless that just is the clear cut value.

i mean this team has so many holes, its damn near impossible to argue against any direction they go in..
i think we need a CB for sure..doesnt necessarily have to be a 1st or 2nd rd pick

We have Carr, Jenkins and Scandrick.
At TE our top backup is a guy coming off a major knee injury who clearly wasn't back 100% last year. At T our top backup is an undrafted nobody. At G we got 4th and 7th round question marks backing up two mediocre starters. We've got great depth at C because our starter sucks so there's no dropoff.
I'm hoping to move Ratliff to end. That would leave Brent as the only NT. We don't have an OLB backup this team trusts on run downs. Our backup safeties are career special teams players.

You won't see me complain about it if it's great value.
Like say somehow Jenkins slides to the 2nd round because of the baggage.

my only argument is that in ryans sytem the #4 CB actually plays...like, ALOT...more than any of those other positions you listed..save for maybe TE..that is also a huge need..especially in our system..
this team is screwed..for at least 1 or 2 more years..its impossible to fill all of these holes this yr

He's been a late riser that a lot of guys have going solidly in the first round now. Mel even mentioned him to Dallas at 14 as a possibility.

I don't agree we're screwed for a couple of years. Take a look at the Champs this year. They have their flaws. Look at the team they barely beat for the title. Their defense is almost non existent.
We can contend next year with the right upgrades.
IMO, they missed their chance in FA. Now I have to hope value meets need early in the draft. Because right now this team isn't good enough at the line of scrimmage to seriously compete with the best.

Right now, I'm thinking if the Cowboys are looking for a corner in the draft, the 3rd round range is about right... you'd have Chase Minnifield from Virginia, whose stock has dropped fairly sharply because tight hamstrings limiting his effectiveness in his workouts... I'm not too worried about that, though, I've seen Chase play maybe 10 or 12 games, and he's a legit 4.4-4.45 40 player on the field...
Or if you wanted to go big, you have Trumaine Johnson from Montana... then there's a player who's reportedly a favorite of Ryan's, Leonard Johnson from Iowa... yeah, you can find some nice value at cornerback in the 3rd round in this draft...
Even in the 4th round, you'd likely be looking at Casey Heyward, Josh Norman or Shaun Prater...
I'd like to add another corner in the draft, but I don't see a need to do it in the first two rounds...

Hmmmm, interesting... even with 3 good corners under contract, you'd draft 2 more corners??
To play devil's advocate here, once again the depth of this corner class seems to extend late into the draft... here's some interesting names to me in the 6th round:
Coryell Judie, Texas A&M
Asa Jackson, Cal Poly... the Boys have shown some interest in him...
Donnie Fletcher, Boston College... terrific size for a corner, surprised everybody by running a 4.4 flat 40 at his Pro Day... some project him to safety, but I think he's fast enough to stay on the corner...
And some 7th round prospects:
Ron Brooks, LSU... the Cowboys have shown interest in him, too...
Chris Greenwood, Albion... small school player with terrific size/speed ratio, is rising the NFLDS charts rapidly the last week or so...
Robert Golden, Arizona... has put some of the concerns about his speed to rest with a 4.45 posting in the 40... another who might project to safety...
I guess if the Boys decided to add Donnie Fletcher late, we could find a use for him...

Obviously the team has a lot of needs that a quality 3rd round pick would solve... TE... WR... Center.
But Minnifield would be a great pickup.

I think the odds are real good that one corner will be drafted. I mean Jenkins is on the last year of his contract and he's had injury problems so the drafting of one corner is probably a sure thing.
But adding another corner?
Yeah I could see that. Right now there are 3 corners on the roster who have experience... And then nothing.
If the Cowboys added a vet, then I'd back off the 2nd drafted corner thing.
