it was the 5th grade. i went to a private catholic school. we had one of those concrete sewer pipes in the playground to ... well play in.
i'd rev him up as much as i could to see how many loops he'd do inside the pipe.
oddly enough it was inside that same concrete tube i smoked my first cigeratte.

It's a good buy and I'm jealous. I have an old toy collector that was on American Pickers a while back that has just the Evil one from 78' still in the box and he said it he was offered $300 for it a couple months ago. Would of sold it to me for $350. With the red wind up the one you got is likely a 76' or 77' cause they went to yellow in 78'.

I actually got similar evel knievel bikes for my nephews several years ago. If I was to get a nostalgic toy that Six Million Dollar Man would probably be the one. Although I have held on to my original remote control R2-D2 from 1977-78.(not in the greatest condition and the controller disappeared)

BIG WHEELS!!!
http://www.babble.com/products/kids-products/toy-fads/images/big-wheel.jpg
I had a pink and light blue one with white tires and I had to be pried off it at the end of the day. I think there was a time or two where I probably got picked up and dragged it in the house with me. I wore the tires out on mine and then took my brothers. Loved doing spin outs in the drive ways, etc.
I don't see them much anymore -- I can't tell you the last time I saw a kid on a Big Wheel. I see they still sell them online on Google shopping so they still exist. I guess $50-$70 for a plastic bike that wears out fairly quickly isn't something too may parents are willing to spend their money on.

How about this for an old game the kids wouldn't play.

Got that like everyone, but me and my older brothers got this one in 1977 I believe. Anyone have this? (one of the grips broke a yr or 2 later and it had to be jury-rigged)

And yep... The controllers were not meant for long-term use when you had a teenage boy playing it.

To be honest this game was alot more fun to play than electric football. Some actual skill involved. Think the teams were Maple Leafs versus Red Wings.

The full arcade versions were the best though. My friend had the home version. That thing didn't last a month before we (a bunch of rambunctious boys) broke it.
I had the home version of Air Hockey. It was cool, but we busted it up too. :(
This isn't the one I had, but it was similar.

My racetrack was never electric. It had the launchers for the cars. I bought my son an electric racetrack and that thing was a complete and total piece of crap.
The cars wouldn't stay on the track and one car stopped working after the first day. the entire thing was in the trash within three days.

Yep. I had the ones that you could add loops into the track too. They owned. The best part about it was, you could go to the store and buy new hotwheels to have new racecars for it.
Another thing, the cars were so much better quality back then. My cars were 2-3x the weight of today's hotwheels. Not to mention they rolled much smoother too.
One of my favorites was a yellow 1957 T-Bird that I had.
Whoa! This is it! It's for sale too! :laugh2:

I remember Christmas 1985 my dad got me what I had been begging for. A Lion Voltron. He spent $79 for it. (expensive in 1985)
I just found one on Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA05101B0435&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle3&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle3-_-Toys+-+Action+Figures-_-Toynami-_-9SIA05101B0435) (Newegg, really? hah) for $399. That is probably what $79 was worth back then in today's money.

My nephew has it now. It was at my mothers house when she passed away. I was already back in NY when they came across it. A few of the lion's are missing tails and a head are missing. The sword is gone too, but it's still there.

We then advanced to the easy show projector that had a crank handle enabling us to watch moving movies. If you didn't crank it fast enough the film would start to melt you could see it bubbling and evaporating as the movie rolled.

I didn't mention Legos because I hate legos. My son has been a lego super hero since about the age of 4. I spent farrrr to much $$ on them. I blame myself of course but inside, inside I hope Lego steps on 1000 legos in a row.

That thing was a blast, but rated one notch below yard darts for danger...
I took that thing in the eye well more than one time... :D
You would pump it up until you couldn't pump it any more, then hold it between your legs because the release was to hard to do with one hand...
Rocket between knees, head bent over watching, suddenly snap the release, experience temporary blindness for a while and subsequent black eye...
But it was all worth it... ;)

But it was all worth it... ;)
with all the dangerous toys we had as kids, i'm amazed so many of us survived.

Yeah. Just like the multi-pump air rifles. :laugh2:

My brother had one of those never forget the time he held it between his knees pumping it until he couldn't pump it anymore and almost ended up with a high powered suppository.

Legos were awesome, especially when there was one stray one in the middle of the floor where someone could step on it with bare feet and curse a blue streak.
:D
Wasn't as bad as stepping on Jacks. We had a shag carpet. You could not see them when they were buried in the carpet. My sister used to leave them everywhere.

Going through this thread sure has brought back a lot of memories. Since there were 4 boys growing up in my household almost all the boy toys listed here were in my house at one time or another. I loved the Evel Kenevel stunt motorcycle. I got it for my birthday in the mid-70’s and I was the only one I knew that had one but I’m not surprised people here loved that thing like I did.
I will admit toys were much more dangerous back then than they are today. Even the Tonka toy trucks were more dangerous back then. Since they were made of metal those things could pack a wallop when thrown by one angry brother at another. :)

My first video game console I got for my birthday in 1977 or maybe it was 1978. It was the Sears Video Arcade. It was an original Atari System, but sold by Sears and Roebuck and didn't carry the Atari name.

It is amazing the difference today than it was back in the 70's and 80's. We used to go out around 9 in the am, do our thing (ride bikes on dirt trails with jumps and everything, shoot BB guns, run around in fields, etc) and come home by supper (dinner to those not from the south). Rinse and repeat the next day. We would play street baseball, travel from friends to friends homes and play basketball at each one, football games in the local park, you name it. Seems nowdays, that is a thing of the past, great times they were!

Pennies, we used to stand around 10 metres from a kerb or wall and see who could through their coin closest to the wall. The winner won the money, the school used to send teachers round the playgrounds to make sure no-one was playing this as they didn't tolerate "gambling" Another game using pennies was table football, could be either Association or American. You started with the coin balancing over your side of the table and had 3 flicks to slide it so it was balancing over the far side of the table. You then flicked it up and caught it which meant your opponent had to make a goal with his fingers, you spun the coin and had to catch it between your thumbs then shoot it through the goals. (the goals were upturned if playing American Football)
The amount of games you could play with a football (soccer ball) as well. If there was only 2 of you then you could play "wally" which involved taking turns to kick the ball off a designated wall. Each player has a set number of lives which they lose each time they miss the wall, was all about trying to hit the wall then a tree or something to give them as tricky a shot as possible. "Kerby" was another 2 player game that only involved a ball, players stand on other side of the road and try to throw it so it bounces of the kerb and back, 1 point for hitting the kerb, 3 if you catch it before it hits the ground after coming off the kerb.
If more people turned up then some jumpers or would ever was lying about would be used to make goalposts someone became the goalkeeper and the others would try and score against them while trying to stop anyone else scoring. This could be done either everyman for himself or in teams of two. If of course there were enough people then you'd just play a proper game.
Never really see weans playing in the park these days.

Oh yeah. My brothers and dad used to play home run derby with the wiffle balls. Although we ended up switching to these nerf baseballs. They were spongy, but still sort of hard. They were also slightly oblong with allowed you to throw curves and other breaking balls. Of course you couldn't throw risers like you could with the wiffle balls.
I can't ever find those nerf baseballs anymore. Now all they have are nerf balls that look like actual baseball clones. Definitely not the same thing.

I wish I still had this. It was the first system at the time (around 1981) that was not connected to your tv. I think it lasted 3 years.
I had that game. It was great. I was in elementary school at the time and my Dad would try to beat me at the football game sometimes. I think it was the only game at the time that only came with one controller also.
This is a great thread and I was just talking about it with family.
I have not seen anything that kids would not want today though. Nothing.
I could even add on the little green soldiers that I had as a kid. All off that stuff was fun.
I had most of the stuff including the stunt bike. If I knew it would be worth anything, I would have kept it. haha. I always loved getting science stuff too. It was cool to look at the microscope or telescope and figure out what was what.
Side note...a bicycle is not really considered a toy. And I grew up in a strict military family. We didn't wear helmets back then though unless you were on a halfpipe.
Times change. But kids will love stuff they get if they are not spoiled (I say that as a kid that had a Grandmother with a shopping habit).

Anybody remember the green machine...that was fun. IIRC you could get a little faster in those but the fun thing was all of the turning and sliding you could get out of those things.

You guys were all pretty lucky.
When I was a kid during WWII we were very poor and on the move a lot and most of the time Santa couldn't find us and besides,we didn't have a chimney anyway, so I only got three Christmas presents during my childhood and one was a book (Otto the Otter). My best present was a cap pistol and a box of five rolls of caps when I was nine in 1948. That was my best Christmas ever. We all loved Christmas anyway because of all the beautiful lights and songs. We never had a tree but I used to love to go around looking at other peoples trees, they were always so beautiful.
We never got any birthday presents or parties. Rich kids get toys, poor kids get beautiful memories and have fun however they can and it doesn't take much to make them happy, sometimes just a pat on the head and a smile is all it takes but we didn't get those very often either. We were never sad and were always happy anyway because life was always good because we made it good. We didn't see ourselves as poor and we felt sorry for those who were poor.
Happiness is always more a matter of attitude than physical possessions. A good attitude usually lasts longer than toys anyway. We were never envious of others and were happy to be together as a family, at least until the "Welfare Department" took us kids away from our mother and sent us to a boys home two states away when I was ten. Life became a lot more serious from then on. We didn't want for anything physical but we were no longer as happy as we had been but she came to see us every year or two and that always made us happy.
Life was good then and it is even better now because it doesn't take much to please me. A good attitude will get you through hard times better than anything else. It isn't really about toys, it's about being happy no matter what.
Life is good even at 73.

Does anyone remember in the late 70s a robot that was similar to Transformers that had tank like tracks on its back and could be coverted into a tank like vehicle? It was red and blue I believe. I can't remember the name and would like to be able to google a pic.

This was a great toy. Fun to ride, but even better was using it as a weapon. We'd play extreme tag with it. Everyone takes off running, and the guy that was "it" would chase after and throw it at you. Sometimes getting hit by that thing while running would rip you right off your feet. Coming home with assorted bumps, bruises, and abrasions was just a part of being a kid in the 70's. The one we had was a little bit smaller than this one, tho.

As I was goggling my toys I realized how lucky I was at Christmas. Every year I was amazed at what my parents were able to get me. One year we got the lion king sound track from Santa and my brother and I were like,"why would we get this? What was Santa thinking?" My mom told us maybe Santa left it at the wrong house.:( Year later I apologized for being a brat.:laugh2:

Oh, by the way, no one should feel sorry for me because of the poverty of my fatherless youth because it served to motivate me to work harder and now my wife and I are semi-retired on our 1,000 acre cattle ranch. If you have a cattle ranch, semi-retired is all you ever get since it keeps you pretty busy.
And then there is my garlic business, which is my way of giving back to society for allowing me to overcome the limitations of my youth.
Good luck to you all.

I'm younger than you, but I remember my parents struggling to make ends meet...
Back then if I broke a crayon they gave me in a set, I almost cried because I knew how hard they worked...
I lost my dad last year and I tucked a note in his suit pocket at the funeral telling him how much I appreciated his sacrifice for things they couldn't really afford and I didn't really deserve...
I wish kids today appreciate what they have... they take WAY TOO much for granted... mine as well...

Sometimes you don't realize how hard your parents had to work to give you the life you had as a kid until you grow up a little. That's what it took for me.
I definitely realize that we were on a very limited budget, but I always had what I needed and a good Christmas. I know it was hard as hell. Yet, my parents always insulated me from their financial issues so that I never had to worry.

I didn't mention Legos because I hate legos. My son has been a lego super hero since about the age of 4. I spent farrrr to much $$ on them. I blame myself of course but inside, inside I hope Lego steps on 1000 legos in a row.
We have about 50 lbs of legos in bins at the house. I told him the other day they were going to get donated this summer.
He's cool w/ that.

I mentioned this thread to a friend and he mentioned GI Joe.
That reminded me of these foot tall action figures that were hard plastic. My brother had General Custer.

I had Geronimo.

I missed this the first time you posted it, but my brother had both of these. For some reason these were the only "action" figures I actually enjoyed playing with. I guess the historical aspect made it fun for me.

Absolutely it was. There was nothing more fun in the summer than jumping dirt piles and stuff with my friends on our bikes, riding around pretending we were on motorcycles, etc.
You never put cards in your wheels with clothespins? :)
The simple things are what I enjoyed.
Yep. I loved pretending the bike was a motorcyle.
I had some of the best times of my life just riding my bike with friends.
I still ride a bike now, as part of my exercise. It's a simple exercise that is very peaceful and enjoyable.
Even when you are elevating your heart rate. :)
I rained terror on my relatives cats with this thing.

LMAO! Oh man yes. I had TONS of Ninja Turtle stuff. It was my second toy 'obsession' that I had during my childhood.

That was to me the coolest board game ever when I was kid. I used to that that was just about as good as board games would ever get.
Then I started playing Risk. Don't know why but Risk has always been my favorite.
Growing up, my family didn't have a lot of extra money, so us kids had to play games like:

Until one day I finally got some of these:

And then one of these:

And I haven't been outside since.
Had and played every one of those things. I loved marbles. It was just such a fun game to play and so simple.
Nintendo absolutely changed everything.
We had an Atari when I was a kid, and I liked it, but I was never into it the way I got into Nintendo.
Hours upon wasted hours on Legend Of Zelda, Mario Brothers, Kung Fu, Double Dragon, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy.

I had those and at the time it was one of my favorite toys. I thought he was cool as hell.
Damn, has anyone mentioned Legos yet? They were one of the best toys ever invented back then.

Had thousands upon thousands of these. I spent a ton of time building ships, homes, crazy tall buildings.

My brother and I didn't have a lot of toys, but we thought this was the coolest thing when we got it one Christmas. We only had a couple of Ninja Turtle actions figures to play around with it but we made due.
And here was the crown jewel of my toy obsession as a kid.
My first love, when it came to toys, was the He-Man action figures. It was my first favorite cartoon and I had absolutely everything you could have possibly got for the He-Man toys. I had all the action figures, Castle Greyskull, everything. Hours upon hours spend playing with these.
Later on when me and a buddy of mine had tons of these, Ninja Turtles, and Ghost Busters, and wrestling action figures we'd spend hours placing them different posses, and scenes, that we called Deadly Scenes, or something like that.
Everyone of them had people in the last moments of a bloody fight with another action figure and showing how they were ended.
It was awesome.
Started out with action figures like this one:
http://img3.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.264648731.jpg (http://img3.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.264648731.jpg)
moved into the world of electronics with this:
http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Vtech/Vtech-TalkingBaseball.jpg (http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Vtech/Vtech-TalkingBaseball.jpg)
until I got to the ultimate toy I ever had:
http://www.gamersace.com/images/Tecmo-Super-Bowl-NES-Cartri.jpg (http://www.gamersace.com/images/Tecmo-Super-Bowl-NES-Cartri.jpg)
Had them and that is still, to this day, the best football game I've ever played on any system. I've never played another one that I had more fun with then Tecmo Superbowl.
Food Fighters:

OMG! I'd forgotten all about the Food Fighters!!!! Those were hilarious. Like the Garbage Pail Kids Trading cards!!!!
THanks for making me feel like a superficial jerk!
Just playing.
Sort of.
Great post man. It really does make a person step back and think about how lucky they really were.
I was extremely lucky and I've always known that and been grateful for it.
Another great post. 1,000 acres!! Man that's awesome.
Anyway... good post as usual Bob. You are an absolute GEM on this site with your knowledge and wisdom...
Mahalo nui loa, my friend...
I've always taken great care of the stuff I was given by my parents. They never gave me a single thing that I wasn't grateful for or was a jerk and didn't like.
I never went out of my way to tear my stuff up like a lot of kids always did. I was always all about taking care of my stuff. Still to this day I take care of my stuff the same way.

I used to love drums as a kid, before I picked up the piano. These things were awesome!
