Jail breaking iPhone

I think I'm finally going to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS (yes the old version of the iPhone) anyways....have a few questions as I tried to research this & still little bit confused.

Can I jailbreak it for free or it is best to pay to have it done?
Do I have to unlock it first then jailbreak?
Do I have to have a computer to jailbreak or can I do it straight from my phone or ipad?

What does jailbreaking an iphone mean? I still don't have a data plan on my cell phone, but I guess I could get one. I do have an iphone. I'm just stubborn about using it.
