Cowboys work out draft picks

02:14 AM CDT on Saturday, April 9, 2005

The Cowboys worked out a number of potential draft picks at their Valley Ranch facilities Friday. The team is allowed to work out players who live in the area or went to college in the area.

Player Pos. School
Anthony Alabi T TCU
Anthony Armstrong WR West Texas A&M
Issa Banna FB Northwestern (La.)
Jeremy Davis LB SFA
Jonathan Evans FB Baylor
Reggie Harrell WR TCU
Brandon Hassell QB TCU
Trey Haverty WR Texas Tech
Michael Hawkins DB Oklahoma
Joey Hawkins TE Texas Tech
Keelan Jackson LB Texas A&M
Tommy Manus WR Morgan State
Cody McCarty TE TCU
Ryan Moats RB Louisiana Tech
Thomson Omboga WR Missouri
Martin Patterson LB TCU
Johnny Randle LB Ark. Pine-Bluff
Jamaica Rector WR NW Missouri State
Jonathan Simon DT Colorado State
Tyson Thompson RB San Jose State
Chris Ban Hoy DT Louisiana Tech
Sam Wilder T Colorado

Out of that list, aside from Moats, Anthony Alabi intrigues me the most. He was a dominant offensive tackle at TCU, and All-Conference USA First Team for two consecutive years. Roadgrader run blocker how but isn't an ideal athlete in pass protection. Weightroom maniac who squats over 800 lbs. Might make a good Day 2 prospect at right tackle. Parcells' type of offensive lineman.

Strengths: Very strong both on the field and in the weight room...Has great size and a massive frame...Has long arms...Explosive...Also a hard worker.
Weaknesses: Not a great natural athlete...Needs to work on refining his game and mastering the nuances of the position...Not great in space...An overachiever.
Notes: Transferred from Navy...Has some tools and his size and long arms alone should earn him a long, hard look from most team.

Joey Hawkins is kind of a novelty. He's probably the tallest player who played in college football last year. A 6'9", 245 lbs. H-back who was used at Texas Tech as a situational player. They would throw the deep fade pass to him in short yardage situations and let him outjump people for it. Played for Bobby Knight on the basketball team, so Parcell's old buddy can vouch for him.

Reggie Harrel is a good, big posession WR too. 6'3" and was pretty much the only WR that TCU had. If TCU had to throw the ball, they were throwing it to Harrel everytime.

Micheal Hawkins was a 5 star guy out of Texas was pushing for a starting spot as a true freshman. 6'2" with great speed. He left OU for personal reasons but the guy was a major talent. Could be a good Practice Squad guy with a very very big upside.

Cowboys work out 22 players from area

By Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING - Former Irving running back Tyson Thompson, former Colleyville Heritage and Texas Tech tight end Joey Hawkins and five former TCU players were among 22 prospective draft picks from the Fort Worth-Dallas area who worked out Friday at the Cowboys' Valley Ranch headquarters.

The Cowboys invited players who played high school or college within a 50-mile radius of the team.

Three players who attended the "Dallas Day" workout last year made the team. Cornerback Jacques Reeves and wide receiver Patrick Crayton were drafted in seventh round and linebacker Kalen Thornton was signed as an undrafted free agent.

Hawkins, who also played basketball for Texas Tech, might have the opportunity to play for both Bob Knight and Bill Parcells.

Thompson played for San Jose State.

When I think of former Parcells offensive tackles, Jumbo Elliot and Jason Fabini, his prototype doesn't really involve someone with athletic ability. They are great, big, strong maulers who ride defensive ends out with their strength and their long arms.

Keelan Jackson LB Texas A&M - he was a safety with speed that bulked up to be an LB. He was an absolute terror until he got hurt his sr. season. If he's there in the 7th I'd take him in a heart beat. Or at least pick him up as an UDFA.

Someone said he was a guard and that could be his best postion as he is a great run blocker and mauler and does not have quick feet or play that well in space. Some technique on footwork can be taught as well as trained for. He translates into a good 2nd day draft propect but may not help the team right away although that's a projection and not fact.

They could do worse drafting an OL day two. If he slips into the six round he would be a good deal there.

I've only seen a few clips so has anyone really watched this guy?
