View Full Version : 3-4 DEs in the draft...

The Boys could use an injection of fresh talent at the DE position, but looking at this draft, I'm not sure they'll want to use an early pick in this draft... to tell you the truth, I don't see DE as being as big a need as NT is, because I think that once Jay Ratliff slimmed down into the 285-290 pound range, he made himself more effective as a DE than as a NT... at 300-310 pounds, he had the strength to hold up at NT, but not now that he's some 20 pounds lighter... I also want to see more of Lissemore at DE...

But let's say the Boys are set on adding a 3-4 DE in this draft, which way should they go??

Well, we know they like Fletcher Cox of Mississippi State, he's one of three players that I think they're hoping to find still on the board at pick 14... if one of those players is still on the board (the other two are OG David DeCastro from Stanford and S Mark Barron from Alabama), the Boys will probably claim that player, but if all 3 are gone (I think that's a possibility), they'll probably want to trade down into the 20s while adding a 2nd or 3rd rounder...

When you get to the 3rd round range, there are 3 intriguing prospects who might merit a close look-- Jared Crick from Nebraska, Billy Winn from Boise State and Cam Johnson from Virginia... from what I'm reading, if I had to hazard a guess as to which of the 3 they'd prefer, I'd put my money on Cam...

Along about the 6th round, the Boys seem to like Brett Roy from Nevada, but I wonder if he isn't more of an OLB in a 3-4... he goes about 6-3, 275 pounds... however, he's pretty slow for a linebacker, so perhaps the Boys think he has the frame to put on 20 pounds and play DE... that would mean a "redshirt" season for him, but you can take a chance on that kind of player in the 6th...

Among the likely undrafted rookie free agent DEs, there are 3 that I kind of like-- Randy Colling from tiny Gannon College, who looks to me like a poor man's Cullen Jenkins (big body); Michael Cosgrove from Idaho; and David Hunter from Houston...

Looking at my board right now, I think I might not look to draft any of these DEs, but if the Boys are set on adding a DE, I'd go with one of the three in the 3rd round range...

The real reason I wouldn't go that route is I have my heart set on drafting Ryan Broyles, and I think it'll take that 3rd round pick to get the job done... I don't think Broyles will last until the Boys' first 4th round pick...

So I'd look for a NT in the draft (more on that in my next thread), and look to sign one or two of those 3 big DEs that look like they won't be drafted...
