Embarrassing. It wouldn't have counted anyway because his foot crossed the line during the initial jump.

Was he perhaps experimenting with a new technique, like the fosbury flop? Probably should have worked it out before the big event.

That is the in thing to do for long jumpers. I first noticed it a couple of Olympiads back, but it could have started way before then. Almost every jumper would try to get the crowd clapping before their jump. I thought it was strange then and still do. Now I don't know when the skunk stripe came into vogue.

All the runners get the crowd cheering and yelling and it makes you go faster, the field guys don't get much in the way of crowd support.
