View Full Version : Great white shark kills championship bodyboarder

South African championship bodyboarder David Lilienfeld, 20, was killed by a great white shark Thursday in Kogel Bay near Cape Town as he caught waves with his brother, according to local news reports.

A shark estimated to be between 13 feet and 16 feet long bit off Lilienfeld's right leg, the reports said.

Witnesses saw the attack from the rocks overlooking the bay.

One of them was Lucille Bester, who said she saw the shark about 20 to 30 yards from Lilienfeld and others in the water but was too far away to catch their attention, according to a report from the Cape Argus on Independent Online.

"The next thing we saw the shark come from under one of the guys and grab him. The shark shook him and then let him go. The surfer was screaming – it was terrible!" Bester is quoted as saying.

I know this guys, I was just being sarcastic. Not shocked or saddened by this. It is unfortunate, but when you take that type of risk...you are rolling the dice everytime. Sometimes you lose.

Apparently the shark was head of neighborhood watch. The victim was only carrying Skittles. There is sure to be an investigation.

By the way here is the story of the "grizzly man"

timothy treadwell autopsy photos - American bear enthusiast, and environmentalist documentary film maker, Timothy Treadwell autopsy photos, one of Google Hot trends, who lived among the grizzly bears of Katmai National Park, Alaska to observe and film their lives, was mauled to death by a grizzly bear.

Timothy Treadwell an environmentalist documentary filmmaker and a bear enthusiast, for 13 seasons, who lived among the grizzly bears of Katmai National Park, Alaska when a tragedy struck. In 2003, He and his girlfriend, assistant physician, Amie Huguenard visited Katmai National Park in Alaska, wherein the two were attacked by a grizzly bear, killing them both at their campsite.

According to Werner Herzog documentary film in 2005, “Grizzly Man”, the film was based on the life work of Timothy Treadwell, states that Amie had a fear of bears and felt deeply uncomfortable in their presence. While, Treadwell chose to set his campsite near a salmon stream where grizzlies commonly feed in the fall.

I have studied sharks since I was a little guy. I have no problems swimming in the ocean. It's all about being smart and knowing the time of day and waters your swimming in. For example you don't really want to swim at dawn or dusk due to low visibility in the waters. Most bulls and whites are notorious for using the low visibilty for hunting purposes and thats usually the times they are feeding. One should also not splash around often attracting attention. Who goes in the water and starts being a spaz? You are just asking to have something come check you out, be it a shark or a seal or w/e.

I have swam with reef sharks and blues when diving. It helps to have eyes in the back of your head, so the buddy system is always something you want to use in the ocean.

It's just a fish. :p:

Sad to see the young man lose his life, but those South African waters are some of the worst in the world for active whites, bulls, bronze whalers cruising through and feeding.

You would be amazed at just how many sharks are near swimmers in populated areas.

Kind of a creepy situation, but definately something one can manage while swimming.

Don't be afraid to go into the water.

You should hear the tape of the Treadwell bear attack. It's gross. The feeding sounds are just awful. Imagine being eaten alive by a bear/shark while you are trying desperately to get it to stop.

There just isn't any worse way to go as far as I am concerned.

Correct. Seal Island is probably one of the only places I would never open dive. Those are waters where you specifically cage dive only and the reason being is you are there to film the whites in the areas.

Air Jaws is insane! How a 1800-2000lb body can launch and flip like that above the water is just incredible to see. I never miss a show during Shark Week.

I am a dive master and have been diving for over 20 years. Been all around the globe, mostly in the Carib. Sea though. Seen many different types of sharks, ranging from the grey reef shard to a whale shark, only have seen a tiger 3 times and never a Great White.

I moved out here to SF over a year ago and I have had the opportunity to go diving at the Farallon Islands just off the coast. I have turned that down twice because it is a known Great White habitat with a lot of them swimming around.

The area is littered with seals, sea lions and all those other shark delicacies. I do realize it would be rare to actually get attacked (especially being under water and not on top) but I just can not shake the thought of one of those big boys taking a stab at me. I am even afraid to try to surf out here, wont get in past my knees, heh.

This is all coming from a guy (me) who is not afraid of the water at all, I'm like a fish myself but when you go to the beach here and see Great White danger postings all over the place, it does damper the mood some.

Interesting. Thank you for posting. True about your local. Some giants swimming around in those waters. You hear the occasional story of a white taking a surfer or kayaker or hitting an abalone diver, but far less than what I would feel was normal. I wonder why that is?

Well you know Bull Sharks have been found in fresh water rivers

A Freshwater Nightmare: The bull shark is a river monster of nightmares — it is a sea creature that can tolerate fresh water, allowing it to travel far up rivers and close to contact with humans. Its tendency to dwell in shallow coastal waters and rivers ranging from the Atlantic to the Indian to the Pacific Ocean, coupled with its unpredictable and aggressive behavior, lead many scientists to label it as the species responsible for the majority of shark attacks on humans. Visit our bull shark safety guide to learn how to stay safe in salt and fresh water.

Actually from what all I've read you can not actually hear the actual audio of that incident because the ones you find online are fake.

From everything I've read about it there is only one copy of the real audio and the person who holds it has not released it and has no plans to ever do so.

I've never seen anywhere that confirms that they have the actual audio and I doubt they do or ever will have.
