With the No. 14 pick, the Cowboys obviously can go in many different directions, from staying put and taking the best player available, to moving down a few spots or possibly trading up.
Different players have been discussed, but we've tried to narrow the field down to just a handful of prospects, one of which is Mississippi State defensive end Fletcher Cox, who played tackle in college but would switch to end in the 3-4 scheme. About a month ago, Cox was considered a late first-round pick, but he has now skyrocketed to the point that he may not even be around for the Cowboys at No. 14, possibly taken in the first seven or eight selections.
Former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus, the new football analyst for DallasCowboys.com, broke down game film of Barron. He watched four Mississippi State games from 2011 (LSU, Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky) and came away with this scouting report:
Initial Take:
He will normally line up at defensive end but has also played inside as a tackle. Initially, I didn't think he had the quickness to get the edge as a rusher but he did a much better job of this against Alabama and Kentucky. He has a tendency to play tall out of the stance but makes up for it by playing with power and his effort. I was impressed with the way he never stopped working to try and get to the ball. Cox is not a one-trick pony, but like some of the ends in the draft, he is going to need to develop some pass-rush moves.
Strengths:
His best move was the spin where he was able to get the tackle's weight on the outside foot then come back inside to free himself ... Was able to work this move against LSU and Kentucky with some success ..
