View Full Version : Is Decastro worth the pick at 14?

Decastro worries me a little at 14. He's got great feet and hands and he's an excellent pulling guard and pass protector. I just don't know that he's got the power to be a road grader in the running game, especially in short yardage.
If I were to pick a guard that high, he'd better be the second coming of John Hannah.

I agree, his weakness seems to be the same as the 'Boys interior lineman had last year. Collapsing right into Romo's lap.

The more I think about it and the closer the draft comes, the more I want defense. I hope that is the way they go (with at least their #1 pick).

Ross Tucker says otherwise and since he actually played in the NFL at that position I say anyone claiming such is FOS.

Wrong, not even close. Decastro is a great run blocker. Great power blocker and zone blocker plus he's the best pulling/ trap guard in the country.

Yes, DeCastro is worth the pick. Question is where is he at on Dallas's board and who do they have in front of him?

Yes. Well worth the pick at that position. Just pencil him in, barring injury, for the start of the year and the next 10.

yes, but let's be realistic. some criticize his ability to run block. in open space they say he looks lost. he's still a hell of an OL though and worth the 14 IF we can't get mark barron :D

DeCastro is a freaking stud, most scouting services have him graded as "elite" so I dont know where the idea that he is weak in the run game came from.
DeCastro could literally start for almost every team in the league on day 1, that is how freaking good he is.

I loved what Glazer was saying about him and what other GMs told him. "He is nasty. He is the one guy no one wants to fight."
Reminds me a bit of Erik Williams attitude.
I want him more than I did before and I really wanted him.

He's not weak at it but his run blocking has been criticized. That's a fact.

David DeCastro. I chose to read the bad things too. It was hard to find since he's so good but there were a couple of notes about him that I saw. He's still elite and worth a 14 or higher pick.

I was actually looking for some discussion about this. You know stuff like...
"In the Washington game he handled a hard driving Alameda Ta' Amu and just plain pancaked him." You know.. information?!?
I know a lot of you guys aren't great fans of Bryan Broadus but he echoed my concerns in a recent Lunch Break and he was a Scout so I was just wondering if some of those knowledable on this forum could elaborate on the positive side for this particular supposed flaw in Decastro's game. But so far all I'm getting is....
uh he's great and powerful he'll be awesome, don't worry about it.
He benched 35 reps at the combine so that shows well but what's his actual playing record against guys like Ta' Amu? Cause if he can't handle Alameda how's he going to handle other hard to pronounce names like Haloti Ngata or Ndamakung Suh?

I have never seen him described as 'looking lost in space', in fact everything I have read states the polar opposite.

from what i've read he struggles a bit when it's one on one and when he's in open space which i assume is the same thing, when he pulls off the line and go out to make a block for the back. that's about the only negative that i've ever heard about him. he's a stud

maybe i read one more article than you. i don't know what to tell you. i'm sure it wasn't put as harshly as i put it since he is a serious talent. but it was absolutely brought up in critiques about him.

Anyone can say this but unless it is someone that is knowledgable it means nothing.
Coaches and scouts and former players - they are worth listening too; anyone else is not.
Especially mediots. And among coaches and the rest they make mistakes all the time. So usually when 90% of the people in the know say something that is what you should listen too.

now that i don't know the answer to. i'm sure it is over looked because it is something that can be fixed relatively quickly. i don't remember where or who, which isn't much help, but i don't know if it was someone you'd consider "worth listening too" and don't get me wrong, i'm a huge decastro supporter and would absolutely love him if we can't get barron. i'm just not gonna ignore a few tiny negative things i read about him.

i'm about 90% positive it came from a scouting site. I'm sorry i can't remember where and I really don't feel like looking because I've read so many things. Maybe SDogo will know something.

I watched the entire USC game recently and if you watch that game you will clearly see him being pushed into the QB on numerous occasions when he was straight up with a DT. So I say it, I saw it.

That's not what I've seen on tape -- he seems to have a real knack for getting to the second level and finding someone to smash. Wonder who "they" are?

What I saw was that he was excellent at pulling and trapping and combo blocking.

Mike Mayock said that he has trouble with bigger DT's. Anyone who doesn't believe it is FOS. I think you are an internet bully who reads what others write and say and then take it as their own opinion. I comment on what I see. Like I said, I saw it and I said it.
