I think I have asked this before, but I have seen differing information from the response I got.

How does a roster bonus count against the cap? Is the entire thing applied towards that year's salary?

How about a two-tiered bonus? Can there be a signing bonus in year 2 that simply is counted against the remaining life of the contract?

Thanks.

Roster bonuses are treated just like signing bonuses If contract was signed after the last preseason game. other wise it counts fully against that years cap, from what I understand.

Signing bonuses are prorated over the entire length of the contract. (when an uncapped year occurs the bonus can only be prorated for 3 years beyond the last capped year)

For a two teir bonus the same applies but works like this. lets say you receive a 16mil bonus contract of 6 yrs it would work like this. Lets say a 7mil in year 1 and the second teir would be 9mil in year two. so the cap hit in year one is
(because 06 is the last capped year it can only be prorated for 5 years) 1.4 mil. the second teir would kick in in year two which is 9mil so the cap hit for signing bonus in year two through 5 would be 3.65 mil ( 1.4 from the first teir and 2.25 from the second teir) in the final year of the contract the hit for the signing bonus would be 0. the second teir could only be prorated for 4 years because 06 is the last capped year.

Now if a new CBA is reached then the bonus would be prorated over the entire length.

Some sites differ on the last capped year is it 06 or 07 the last season with a salary cap is 2006 even though 2007 is the last year of the CBA I think that is the confusion between sites some say 06 because the salary cap ends in that year some say 07 because its the last of the CBA.

JK has it pretty much correct. For the most part, roster bonuses count in full in the year they're paid, unless they're guaranteed (in which case they're prorated). Signing bonuses are prorated beginning in the year they're paid, and they can't be prorated more than three years past the final capped year (which is 2006 right now). So in a "two-tiered" signing bonus, the second portion would be prorated starting in the year it's paid.
