Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys didn’t give themselves much of a chance to win the NFC East last year with Alan Ball and Frank Walker playing big roles at cornerback.
That is why Mike Jenkins remains valuable to the Cowboys, executive vice president Stephen Jones said.
“We were trying to win the NFC East championship, unfortunately, with guys like Alan Ball and Frank Walker,” Jones said. “Not trying to be rough on them, but guys get hurt, and we would like to have good players to be available, and Mike Jenkins is a damn good cornerback.”

It's funny when some of us were saying this last year, there was a lot of support for Alan Ball on this board, with people saying he's just fine for a fourth corner and deriding those who didn't feel the same way.
Ball was on the field far too much last year to be just fine as a fourth corner.

Wow... don't disagree with S. Jones, but talking about throwing a couple of role players under the bus...
So... if the players are giving it everything they have, but that isn't good enough...
That begs the question - is it the players fault or the ones who decide which players will be on the team?

I agree. It's definitely true what Jones is saying, but he didn't have to throw specific guys under the bus. He could have just said, "With the state of our cornerbacks last season and with all the unfortunate injures, we didn't really give ourselves much of a chance to win the NFC East." It's called rhetoric, Steven.

Maybe Mr. Jones needs to look in the mirror before speaking...

I think its a little unfair to indict a guy off the street (walker) but Ball had his chances.
There is also a difference when your top 2 corners are both injured and your slot cb can't play the outside for his life. Then your 4th corner isn't your 4th corner any more.
I haven't been this excited since we had Tnew, Anthony Henry, Pacman, Jenkins and Oscan back there.
Hopefully we get slightly better results than 08 (for example: none of our players get suspended for fighting a team provided bodyguard)

haha love how stephen blatantly came out and said well we couldn't defend with guys like ball and walker back there.

D'ja think, Stephen?

I don't remember support for Allan Ball as a starting CB on this board. People, rightly, said he was find for a dime CB, but he's not a guy you want in your starting lineup. We should have drafted that player prior to last season, frankly.

I'm glad to hear this. I like Mike Jenkins a lot and would love to keep him as a 3rd CB. I hope he has enough sense to ask for a reasonable pay day next year and stays a Cowboy.

I actually like it. Wish they would always be this forthcoming because it indicts the player and the ones who made the decisions to keep them.

Alan Ball will be lucky to make the 2012 roster.

The Giants games made this painfully clear if it wasn't so already.

Well, its like in business, you have to be "PC" about things.
I dont know if you have ever had to fire anybody before, but I can tell you from experience that you usually say "this is not the right fit for you" or "your talents are being wasted here", ect.......
Of course the truth is that they employee flat out sucks, either they are showing up late everyday or their work is subpar. However, you dont say that when you fire them, you are more diplomatic than that.
Thats my point, it usually is not "PC" for the owner of the team to call out specific players as the reason the team did not win the division.

certainly a different approach from his father....who is the KING of hyperbole....having said that...I am not opposed to a different approach, because I personally feel his dad got WAY to friendly with players and was loyal to a fault at times.

I wasn't caustic but I was to the point.
