The Dud Scenario
by Rafael Vela (http://blog.theboys.com/?p=78)
Most draft speculation on this site has the Cowboys choosing from many appealing options at pick 11. What if Derrick Johnson andShawne Merriman are on the board? What if one of the big receivers drops? What do you do if Antrel Rolle is the top player on the board? Do you draft him and make him a safety?
Now, what if none of those options emerges? One of the games every NFL team plays is game-planning for all possibilities, good and bad. Imagine this permutation plays out on draft day:
1. San Francisco Aaron Rogers
2. Miami Ronnie Brown
3. Cleveland Shawne Merriman
4. Chicago Braylon Edwards
5. Tampa Bay Mike Williams
6. Tennessee Antrel Rolle
7. Minnesota Troy Williamson
8. Arizona Alex Smith
9. Washington Erasmus James
10. Detroit Derrick Johnson
Its now your turn. The wide receivers are all gone. The top linebackers are gone too. So is your safety option. The top players on the board are running backs, which you do not need. Your trade options are weak, since everybody is trying to move down. What would Dallas do in this case? My guess is that they take Marcus Spears.

Ware is climbing fast. Hopefully he isn't another Mamula.

If they take "no-play" Spears I'll snap.
But my guess is that someone may step up and try getting the OT from FSU or one of the backs.

I think Ware has less "Mamula" in him than does Merriman.

If it plays out that way, there should be someone willing to jump up for one of the RBs.
i don't think there is any way possible that both Benson and Williams falls out of the top 10.

If no trade down scenario presents itself, then you can take the best player available. Lets take a look at who would be left with first round grades:
- CB's - Pac Man Jones, Carlos Rogers, Cory Webster. any of these three would improve this team. Webster's stock has slipped, but Jones and Rogers are legit at #11
- DE's - Marcus Spears, David Pollack, Dan Cody. The first two have been projected at this point on many draft boards, and would , again represent an upgrade.
- DT - Travis Johnson. This guy is the only DT to get a consistent first round grade on draft boards. He would represent depth at a position that has been a weakness in the Cowboy's scheme
- RB - Carnell Williams - I don't see how this guy would slide this far, as TB saw this guy as the player to build around. If he was available at this point in the draft, he might represent the best trade-down scenario out there. Minnesota at #18 might feel that he's the key to having a dominant offense. If the Cowboys took him, he would provide a real depth to the running attack. Frankly, he really won't be there at this point. frankly, I would see him going to Tennessee, as they could use a stud RB (Brown's injury concerns) and they have a history of taking the BPA.
Cedri Benson - See the above. Both of these RB's will help somebody enourmously and would be good additions to anybody's team.
There are still good players left in your scenario and we shouldn't get too hung up on the obvious needs. We need a number of holes plugged and we can get good value at that point. If they took Pollack, Jones, Spears, or even Mark Clayton, I wouldn't get too worked up. I think that the reality of our draft boards vs the team's draft boards may be quite different.

yea well there was no way possible that both Stephen Jackson AND Kevin Jones would fall for Dallas pick last year, and absolutely NO WAY possible Dallas wouldnt jump to pick either.
And we all know how that went lol.

there are only so many top 10 players, and this year for our purposes, there are 11. one of the top players will fall to us, and whether we choose to draft him to fill a need (DE/LB, OT, WR) or trade down and hope to fill two needs is the only question. but rest assured there will be a suitor for that #11... good money says we trade down - with who depends on who falls to us.

Tough scenario I think Alex Barron at that point is the BPA at a position of relative need at a marquee position. I make Alex Barron the 11th pick.

It's a little early for my tastes, but if they are stuck with the pick don't count out Alex Barron, the OT from FSU. They would probably need to move Flo to the right side, but this would complete the O line.

I think we would take Ware and be happy about it. Only if we couldn't trade down though.

I cqn see this and unless they are married to Barron and don't have to fall too far as well as being able to get the right deal this would be exactly what they are hoping for.

I agree with Followthestar. If Benson or Williams fall to # 11, there will be several teams jumping up and down to trade up to snare one. Both are franchise RBs.
