The Cowboys open rookie minicamp on Friday at Valley Ranch, and that makes me think about Dez Bryant (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13215/dez-bryant), who is entering his third season this fall.

When Bryant went through his rookie minicamp in 2010, a mini-firestorm flared up concerning his conditioning -- or possible lack thereof. During his very first practice, Bryant was wheezing and bending over. On the last day of the session, he tweaked his ankle.

Bryant has battled through some health issues during his first two NFL seasons, but he caught 63 passes for 928 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He endured several games where he was almost non-existent in the second half, finishing third on the team with 370 receiving yards after halftime.

When the veteran minicamp begins in June, Bryant has to enter with the mindset that he'll be better this season. He's a better talent than Miles Austin (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10147/miles-austin), just not as polished. The Cowboys need Bryant to play much better than last season.

I second that.

Hope he's able to put it all together this year.

Dez has already put a lot together. People have ridiculous expectations from a kid who only played in 27 games in college.. Barely more than 2 years of college football experience...

He was out of shape when he got here? Yeah could that have to do with not having played any football since September 2009. Those Mini camps were in what May of 2010?

I think we should also look closer to see who Jimmy Robinson developed.

He started coaching green bay's wide receivers in 2006.

At first glance you would probably want to credit him with Donald Driver, except if you go back to 2005, you would see that he was already highly productive.

Greg Jennings didn't develop any faster than Dez Bryant did.

Jordy Nelson and James Jones developed into decent backup receivers, but these guys are 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.

Just got to gain Romo's trust and run those crisp routes.....

Im afraid ....if Dez doesnt learn this year...the playbook...more then 3 routes....then he will never learn and never meet expectations.

Not saying he hasn't. I actually think he's done a great job given his situation. I just want him to get to the point where he knows this offense in and out, and I think when he does he'll be pretty unstoppable.

Yeah, people do (and did) have ridiculous expectations for Dez. I didn't expect him to be the best receiver in the NFL his first year, but I think he has progressed well since he's been on this team.

Study habits are his only weakness. It's all up to him.

Was watching some Rookie program on NFL network the other day, and I remembered reading something from Coachscout from last year about Dez. Something along the lines of only being able to run 3 routes. Patrick Peterson was mic'd for that game and he said the same thing verbatim on the sidelines, knowing exactly what Dez was going to run.
Dez needs to get more prepared to become an elite receiver in the NFL. The sky is the limit for that kid though. He's a beast.

It's "more than".
