IRVING -- National experts have been critical recently of the lack of leadership in the Cowboys' locker room. Many believe the Cowboys haven't reached the playoffs the last two seasons because the group is without a true leader.

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young said Wednesday (http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dallas-cowboys/headlines/20120502-steve-young-properly-led-cowboys-reach-super-bowl-claiborne-doesn-t-matter.ece) that the leadership in the locker room is the only thing preventing the Cowboys from making a Super Bowl run every year.

Working out at Valley Ranch on Friday, Cowboys inside linebacker Sean Lee talked about the leadership role he plans on taking in 2012.

"I think playing more last year, being a guy that makes the calls in the huddle, I'm definitely going to have to step up from a leadership standpoint on the field and off the field," said Lee, who was sporting a red Texas Rangers hat. "I got a ton of great guys on the team right now to look up to. Guys like obviously Tony [Romo], Jason [Witten] and DeMarcus [Ware]. So, there are a lot of guys that I'm looking up to and trying to be like, but at the same time, trying to become a better leader myself."

With Bradie James and Keith Brooking gone, Sean Lee is in the prime position to be a more vocal leader in the locker room.

Lee seems to be the kind of leader the Cowboys have been looking for particularly on defense. Don't get me wrong; love Ware but he's more of a look what I do instead of calling out other players when the situation warrants it. Fact is we have quite a few of those type. And again I'm not saying that Lee must be a loudmouth but a player that other players respect enough to play, workout, study, etc. likes he does if we expect to go all the way. Realize this only his 2nd year as a starter but if he continues to play like he did last year then he could well be one of those team leaders we've been looking for.

For example, some teams (like the Patriots) have group of vets who respected enough that other players on their team listen to them when they aren't playing their best or clowing around, etc. It's not all on the QB to be the one who leads--must be several players in that role.

When Parcells was the coach, the players supposed believed he quashed such an attitude to develope on the team cause he was the big guy. Wade was much too lenient. I remember reading (one of the Cowboy players told this story) that at least once in practice Romo wanted to rerun several offensive plays cause he wasn't satisfied with execution of some plays. Wade refused to allow Romo to rerun the play(s); no mention what Garrett said about it or whether he had any input.

BTW: One of the things I'm hoping to see is the offensive to line up better then they did in 2011 when it seemed like Romo had to tell many of his players where they should be in the formation, etc.

Lee might be the same way. I don't know how vocal he can be. A Penn St. fan could provide better input.
