IRVING – Former UTSA sprinter Teddy Williams is lining up at cornerback after spending last season on the Cowboys practice squad as a wide receiver.

“I welcome any opportunity to prove myself,” Williams said. “If you are given an opportunity to perform, you embrace it. It doesn’t matter if it’s on (special teams) or (at cornerback). Wherever they put me, I’m going to go out and give it all I’ve got and go as hard as I can every down, every play.”

Williams’ time with the Cowboys has been an up-and-down affair. He was thrilled when the team took a flyer on him in 2010, but his battle to make the active roster ended early in training camp last year when he ran into wide receiver coach Jimmy Robinson during a training camp practice last July at the Alamodome.

“He’s different than some track guys in that he has a physical mentality playing football. He just needs to understand how to play football. We are going to give him another shot playing defensive back, hoping he can use some of that physical ability that he has. He shows up on special teams a lot. He has physical tools. He just needs to learn how to play.”

sorry to say it, but i doubt he'll make the team.

in addition to being way behind developmentally, there's probably less of a chance of landing a spot as a cornerback than there is as a wide receiver. we already have four cornerbacks who can start. conversely, only two wide receiver positions are guaranteed.
