Interesting.....

Gary,New Jersey
Hey Mort,What are the chances that Merriman of Maryland falls to the cowboys at #11?If he is not,Will they be interested in Demarcus Ware? With their second pick,do you see them trading down to get extra picks? With their extra picks aquired do you see them finallly getting the trade done for Darren Howard?Your thoughts.

CHRIS MORTENSEN
I think they are reluctant to do the deal for Howard. I could see Marcus Spears in the mix on that 11th pick. I can see them trading back from 20.

Chris, im going crazy trying to figure what the Jets should do. I would love to see them trade Abraham to the cowboys for those 2 #1's

CHRIS MORTENSEN
I bet you would....I would be shocked if the Cowboys traded both those 1's for Abraham.

In both 1992 and 1993, and I believe in 1994 too, Mort was the only guy on ESPN predicting the Cowboys would be in the Superbowl.

I guess that makes him an idiot, as well.

I am growing an affinity to Ziegen and Shiner Bock, both of which are brewed right here in my home state of Texas.

I am a big corona fan.....I like light beer. If I want alcohol, I drink a belt of whiskey.

I like the idea of Marcus Spear at the 11th, but I just think Miami aka Nick Saban won't pass on his former collegiate stud. Spears scored alot of defensive TDs for LSU. I won't be surprised if Miami try to trade down to about the 7 to 10 spot to acquire Marcus Spears and get an additional pick in the 2nd or 3rd.

Charles,

I am fairly new to the board and I've enjoyed some of your views on the draft. This time, I have to say I think you are crazy. I'm not saying that Saban wouldn't like to have Spears, but if they don't shore up the running game the Miami fans will have his head.

I have no doubt they take a RB round one.

I don't know, this draft is pretty deep at RB. They could easily pick up a pretty good one in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

IMHO I think the Miami Doplhins running attack woes has more to do with their putrid Offensive line than Rbs. There O-line has been horrible. I think Nick Saban defensive background will make him address the trenches on both side of the ball before he goes after a 1st RD Rb. I think they will try and trade out that spot and get a D-linemen (Spears) and Olinemen (Tackle).

The reason I think Nick Saban isn't interested in drafting a RB is because he contacted Ricky Williams in an effort to woe him back. I agree the Doplhin fans might raise hell but they also witnessed Jimmy Johnson another great talent evaluator bomb on RBs.

They should be happy if they go in another direction just for a change

I really think that Spears is getting overlooked. I think he's going to be a great player. He really reminds me of Richard Seymore. Getting him at #11 and someone like Blackstock at #20 allows the team enough versatility to play any scheme you want effectively.

wow I'd be stunned if Spears went that high...honestly I could see him being one of the fallers on draft day...his workouts werent impressive at all from what I read and from wathcing him in games he wasnt a consistent impact player...I think he's a solid player and has potential, but taking him at 11 (or if he goes before) would worry me alot

I don't really buy into combine or workout numbers. I think they are underwear olympics.

You couldn't have watched Marcus Spears and not be impressed. He has scored numerous defensive TDs and 17 tackles for losses in his senior year. not to mention about 7 or 8 sacks.

I have paid very specific attention to Spears and there is no doubt he is worthy of a 1st round selection.

There is also no doubt he takes many a play, off, which REALLY concerns me.

I wouldn't throw TOO much a fit if we grabbed him at 20 - but if we were foolish enough to take him at 11, I'd throw pea salad all over the place.

I know what his numbers were and they were ok but werent exceptional...he probably should have had better numbers than he did condiering his size and athletic ability...granted he is still learning the DE position

he does have a knack for timely big plays, but I doubt he's ever gonna be a 12-15 sack a yr guy in the NFL...his best position is probably LDE and we already have one of the best LDE's in football in Ellis

I wont complain if we take him, but if we do I hope its after trading down from 11...

to be honest nobody at 11 really peels my banana unless Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards somehow falls in our lap...my hope if we dont get MW or BE is we can move back 4-6 spots or so and still land a Ware, Merriman, Spears, Pollack type and pick up the extra pick or two

Every time I think about Spears not being able to play RE, I always think about Seymore again. If I'm not mistaken, when the Pats were going to four man fronts last season, Seymore was the right end, wasn't he?

Look, I wouldn't argue with anyone who said that Spears didn't have prototypical speed. I understand that. I just also believe there are several ways to pressure the QB, and Spears always seemed to do that.

Let's break down Mort's exact quote:

"I think they are reluctant to do the deal for Howard."

In this case, Mort is expressing some doubt but not dismissing it.

"I could see Marcus Spears in the mix on that 11th pick."

"I can see them trading back from 20."
