IRVING — Dallas Cowboys rookie Kyle Wilber graduated from Wake Forest with an appreciation for arguably the greatest pro athlete the school has produced: the Spurs' Tim Duncan.
And like the four-time NBA champ, Wilber is known for embracing the fundamentals of his sport and doing things the right way. An outside linebacker with a quick first step, Wilber believes mastering the X's and O's is just as important as his time in the 40 or how much he can bench press.
“I really want to get into the playbook and learn the scheme, eliminate mental mistakes,” Wilber said at rookie camp last week.
Midway through the three-day camp, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan gave Wilber a positive review.
“He's a smart kid,” Ryan said of Wilber, who graduated in December with a double major in sociology and communication. “He plays hard. He knows how to cover, which is a hard thing for an outside linebacker. All they do is rush in college. Well, this kid knows how to cover. He's going to be a lot further advanced than most rookies are.
“The kid's got a lot of talent. So we hope he'll be able to help (right away).”
