just found out I'll be headed to vegas this summer and was wondering if anybody has done anything particularly fun that isn't in a travel guide and where the best places to eat might be. My GF wants to take her dad to a really nice dinner for his B day/fathers day.
so far we plan on a trip to the hoover dam, zipline down freemont, planning to see a cirque du soleil(not zoomanity because it is all nude and with GFs father so, yeah), go to the pawn stars place, and we plan to stay at the MGM signature.

Good choice on your acomodations. Signature is attached to the MGM at a value rate rate, basically one block to the strip. Monorail runs behind the MGM. I would research the best of Vegas because the are so many places to eat there and stuff to do besides gamble.

If you are going to zip line, than zip line.

I did the Hoover Dam.. If you're going to do the tour, make sure you do the comedy one. Otherwise, you'll be bored out of your mind.
Don't know how you feel about hypnotism, but my friend and I went to a clean, comedic hypnotist show and she got hyponotized and it was hilarious. She was literally on all fours barking like a dog. lol
We also went to the Xcalibur Casino for the Knights of the Round Table dinner. It's about $50. You sit in a European country, and watch them duel one another while eating. They serve you a stalk of broccoli, a cornish hen, some sorta dessert.
I'm too scary to ride the rollercoaster on top of New York, New York, but I did take in some of the amusement stuff in the Circus, Circus casino. And did it all before our flight back home. lol
If you walk around, you might can catch some of their free shows in various casinos.

Gotta be honest, if not for my friend, I doubt I would've gone to see the Hoover Dam. It just wasn't my kinda thing.
Anyway, the comedian tells jokes throughout the tour, and she was pretty funny. On the way back, they stopped in a small town to allow us a little bit of time for shopping and to feed us at this quaint restaurant. The meal was part of the fee.
Also, on the way back, as part of the tour, we stopped at some sorta chocolate factory. M & M, I think, and that was pretty cool.
Overall, the hypotist thing was by far the best experience. The ridiculousness was too wild for words. And they videotape it, too. lol

A couple years ago my girl and I took a trip to Vegas and I got this package deal for her birthday. It was dinner at Lavo, and fancy italian restaurant attached to the Venetian/Palazzo, then Blue Man Group, and then the club Lavo when it opened at 11, which was the one Jerry Jones was at last year I believe.
The food was absolutely fantastic, show was awesome, and the club was top notch. I recommend at least trying out the restaurant if you're looking for something fancy for the birthday.
We went back there last year and did the same for her birthday, except this time we sat outside and watched the pirates show across the strip.
Other than that, I recommend you actually plan your days and what you're going to do in advance. If you just wing it you end up wasting a lot of time walking through hotels not knowing where you're going or what you want to do.

when i went to the hoover damn w/a friend, our tour guide, she was pretty cool. told all the stories as if talking to friends. when we got to where everyone would touch the feet of the winged dudes, i asked her if she ever did that while we were standing next to a handrail leaning on it. she said "hell no - do you know what kind of germs would be on that"
and i said "probably no more than the handrail you're holding now".

The lady tour guide we had kept flirting with this engaged/married guy the whole trip. And the flirts would be so hilarous, because she would go from all Hoover-focused to all over this guy.
She literally made the trip bearable.

I stayed at the Signature last year with my firm. Rooms are nice but the hotel is far from everything, it is about 10 minutes just to walk to the MGM Grand, although it is a covered walk. There is also no casino in the Signature.
Venetian is really nice or Bellagio.
Take a Grand Canyon Tour, I saw Cirque de Soleil Love, was stupid but the gymnastics were great.
The Planet Hollywood Mall is nice, good jeans store there, Rock and Religion, jeans are pretty cheap at 150 or so a pair for Rock Revival Jeans. If you don't want to go cheap on jeans, there is True Religion right next to it.
Forum Shops are high end but nice.
My wife says Fashion Show Mall is great but I have never gone there.
Eat at the Tao Restaurant or Spargo.
If you have never been to the real Venice, you can take a Gondola ride at the Venetian.
You might also want to go up to the Las Vegas Speedway and take a ride in a high end sports car. It is pricey but worth it big time.

I highly recommend the Blue Ox Tavern as a place to go get a simple, not too expensive meal away from the bigger casinos. The food is good, the atmosphere is too. It's on Sahara.
I personally always liked the Imax Theater at Caesar's Palace.
Circus Circus used to have a great buffet with delicious prime rib. I haven't been there in 20 years so I am not sure how it is now.
The Mirage is my favorite place to gamble. I have no idea why, I just seem to be luckier there.
The show I would most like to see is the Cirque de Soliel. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love that stuff.
Garth Brooks would be next on my list. I have seen him twice and he is unreal in concert.
If you want a magic show Penn & Teller are the kings. Cris Angel is popular, but Dick Arthur is the most unheralded guy out there and his show is awesome. < That is per my brother-in-law who is a magician.

Circus Circus is an extreme disappointment, now. I tried their buffet twice, first about ten years ago and then again about 5 years ago. The food is okay, but the atmosphere completely kills it.
When I was there last year, the hotel just looks run down from the outside now. It's now a bit away from the strip, surrounded by construction and run down buildings. The Sahara had just been closed at that point, so it was a very eerie, odd feeling being in that part of the strip. Once you head back towards the strip past the Wynn, it starts to feel much better.
Buffets are a tad more expensive now in the main hotels, but often times worth it, in my opinion. The best breakfast buffet I've had was at Paris. It was fantastic, but get there early.

There's a ton of great places to eat, owned or run by chefs you've seen on TV. You mat want to check out the Vegas.com site to narrow down your choices based on what you're looking for (i.e. price, location, etc.).
Something I learned while in Las Vegas is that a ton of cheap/free stuff goes on all the time, you just got to be wise to it. Here's a site that could help you this summer (BTW, don't click this at work unless you won't get in trouble for girls in bikinis on your screen):
http://www.spyonvegas.com/
That site will tell you where free concerts and open bars are at this summer. I used it while in Vegas, and it was awesome. They're almost a lock to have a few events at the Hard Rock pool at night, which is usually pretty fun. I'd highly recommend checking it out.
If you're into crazy rides, check out the Stratosphere. At that height, even simple rides can get your heart pounding. Most people like the "Big Shot" but there's a few other rides that they've added in the past few years that also seem to be popular.
I'd write more, but I have to go to work. I hope you have a great time out there.

They are made of denim. Paying ridiculousness mounts for denim is ridiculousness in itself. The funny thing is, Levi's denim quality of say their 501 or 505 are 50x better than those $100+ fashion jeans. Anyone who pays $200 for jeans, tell them I've got a card board box I want to sell them for $7,000. They must be sucker enough to buy it.

I don't know, my Rock Revival jeans feel better and look better than the old Levi 505s I used to wear when I was less aware.
I also know my $55.00 Lacoste white tshirt feels better than a Hanes $5.00 one.
At the same time, I do it because I can.
It's like paying thousands of dollars per year to have my son in a private club for hockey when I could get by for $500.00 at a local city organization. I do it because I can.
Ask yourself, when you travel, do you stay at say a Hilton or a Motel 6? They both provide you with a bed, shower and tv. Why pay more, because you can.

Yeah. You can jump off the George Washington Bridge too, when are you planning to do that?
Spending more money than something is worth is stupid. The MacBook Pro is a really nice laptop, but to get one spec out the way I want would cost me over $2,000. That just isn't going to happen when I can get one just like it that isn't a Mac for around a grand less.
I drive a Mercedes, but I pay less than $500 a month for it. If I had to pay retail, I wouldn't have bought it.

I wear Kirkland Jeans most of the time and I don't care the name brand of a t-shirt. I'll wear Wranglers. I'll wear Levis. But Kirklands are inexpensive and fit my butt.
My wife is a very down to earth gal who would skin me alive for spending that kind of money on a sweater. Remember, I live in Arizona. Sweaters are basically useless here. I don't put her worth on what I will buy her. Nor does she expect me to. If she wants something I don't say no, but I can't see her wanting an item of clothing for that price. Just not her thing.

i almost got sucked into the expensive jeans trend while at a Nordstrom's outlet. People were like, "wow, look at these Seven brand jeans, they are half price! Only $100!" So, I think wow, half price... I'll try some on. I went through 3-4 sizes/styles from Seven, and they felt cheap and/or fit poorly. I then tried several other outrageously priced jeans... nothing felt good. Then I went in the Levi's store & grabbed a pair of off the shelf 505 Straight jeans. They fit perfectly, right off the shelf. Looked good, and at $40 each, I got 2 pair. Sold for life (again).
On a related note... Have you noticed that America has both an obesity problem & an affinity for skinny jeans? Bad combination.

Almost the same thing happened to me.
I walked into an Abercrombie and Fitch when we got our first one and immediately felt out of place. I tried on some jeans that were alright. They fit okay, but had a weird texture. Then I noticed they had holes in them.
Then I noticed they were $70.
I hung them back up and never walked into an Abercrombie and Fitch again.

Abercrombie is notoriously small on its' sizes. I am 5'10 180 so usually wear "large" but at Abercrombie I am XXL.
I tried a pair of jeans on at a store called Zara once, they were Euro fit. I usually take a 33 or 34. Tried on the 34 at Zara and they couldn't even be done up.
Banana Republic jeans are better than Gap which are better than Old Navy.
I find Wrangler, Levi's and Lee to be too rough a denim.
I love my Lacoste dress shirt. Yeah I was shocked when I got to the till and found out it was $160 plus tax, but by then no way I was going to say no, I am not buying it.
I used to have less $$ so I bought less expensive things but I have more now so I figure why not.
It's like going to WDW next month, I could stay at All-Star Resort for less but I am getting a Savannah room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge so my kid can see giraffes, zebras and wildebeest in front of his room. Nicer interior and that atmosphere is worth the extra 1500 it will cost.

The holes were deliberate you know, add to the flavour of the jeans.
If you want a cheaper version of Abercrombie, go to Hollister.

You are going to hate this.
Just not her thing.
that's fair but any dress she buys will be at least $100.

I know they were deliberate. I can't in all good conscience buy jeans with holes already in them, even if they are deliberate. Faded, yes. Holes, no.
My point was that the Abercrombie jeans felt really so so. I don't necessarily want a cheaper version.
To me, you're paying for a status symbol, not quality. And I used to be concerned about that.
I got best dressed four years in a row in high school, so I get where you're coming from. I just don't agree with it anymore.

we cancelled the mgm signature reservation because m-life sent an email offer for the mirage at $39 a night so that was just too good to pass up.
also so far we are planning to go to pole position go karts, cirque du soleil LOVE which is in the mirage so that works out, we get 15% off tickets but maybe we get comped which would be awesome.
we are also planning to see another show but have decided to be flexible about which one we see so we can save a ton of money by using the tix 4 tonight service in vegas. the hope is for blue man group but there are a few others we are interested in.
as for restaurants we are still looking and open for suggestions but we will make it a point to stop by serendipity 3 for some frozen hot chocolate :D

Go to The Sugar Factory (restaurant) at least once and have the Steak and Eggs. You will thank me.
Don't buy candy there it is a rip off. I never had steak and eggs before in my life but it was worth the money and delicious. It is in front of the Paris casino.
You can go to Red Rock Casino via bus that comes to the fashion mall (outside of Forever 21, and only a couple of blocks from the Mirage). Bowling Alley, Movies, Food Court in the Casino, beautiful place, the mountains on the horizon are awesome.
I go to Vegas at least once a year. Hit me up with pretty much anything.
Side note: Unless you are buying something from the pawn shop it isn't worth going. It is not near the strip and just a bigger cleaner version of any other pawn shop that is anywhere in the states.
Freemont street is cheaper and good fun at night.
The Harley Davidson restaurant (on the main strip, not Freemont) is cheap and really good.
If you take a cab don't go down the strip. Ask them to take the back route.

There are plenty of very nice restaurants in Vegas. Pick a nice one with the kind of food you like and do that one night.
A couple of decent places off the beaten path are the Breakfast Buffet at the Orleans on West Tropincana. It's priced decently and the food is pretty good.
The Black Bear, also on Tropicana is a good place to get a good Breakfast as well.
Ellis Island is a good inexpensive place to eat as well. Nice little steak cooked well. There is a Micro Brewery there so if you want a beer, you can get that too. Also, there is a little BBQ place right there in the same location that I like. Decent BBQ and Chicken all fairly inexpensive. It's on Koval there in Eastside.
The Sandwich Earl there on South Vegas Blvd is good. It's a sandwich place but it's pretty good.
People will say Heart Attack Grill but if you want a good burger, the Burger Bar is close and it's a good burger. It's in the Madalay Bay.
If you like Seafood or Asian, Sushi, that kind of thing then Roy's is a good place. It's a romantic type setting if that's the kind of food you like. Roy's is on East Flamingo.
Vic and Anthoney's is good, I've eaten there many times. It's expesnive, it's Steak, Seafood, upscale. It would be a very nice place for a special occasion. It's on Fremont St.
If you like Greek Food, there is a place called the Fat Greek. It's pretty good if you like Greek Food. It's not over priced and I've always gotten really good service there, which is a big thing in Vegas. It's on Decatur.
If you like Italina Food, Casa De Amore is a good place. It's off the beaten path as well. You can eat in the formal dinning room or you can order at the Bar which is also not bad and listen to live music. It's kind of cool to do that. My Wife likes that. It's not real, real expensive and the food, I think, is really good. It's on East Tropicana.
There is also a place called Off The Strip. It's also Italian and it's pretty good too. We don't go there as much because my Wife likes the Music at De Amore but a lot of locals go there. It's more of a neighborhood place. People don't dress up and it's not formal. It's just a good place to eat and not very expensive. It's out on South Highland Parkway.
If you like French, which I am just so-so on, I am told that Le Crique is the place. I can not say as I have never eaten here but I have several good friends and family that have said it is very good. Also very expensive. It's a special occasion kind of thing, very Romantic I'm told. It's in the Bellagio.
If you want to shop, you can go out towards the AP and there is an outlet mall that you can go to which will be priced much better then on the strip or what have you. If you want to make a day of it, you can plan a drive out to Stateline for the outlet mall there. It is bigger with more shops and priced better because it is further out. In these places, you can find just about anything you would want.
I hope this is helpful.

good at least you are right on the strip now, closer to fashion show mall and the forum shops.

thanks, lots of good info here, i'll have to check out a few of those places, especially the sandwhich place, we are focused so much on dinner meals I know that we will end up just doing fast food for lunch a few days and I would rather not get something that I can get in dallas

Yeah, and I wouldn't pay that so it isn't worth anything to me. Give me my jeans and t-shirts. I will die a happy man.
Why would anyone pay 60$ for pants? Because some places don't have Ross or Marshall's. Other people are just too egotistical to shop there. But you get the same thing if you look hard enough. I like Ross because I can choose from a bunch of stuff at around half price or less usually.

You can't get decent pants for under 100 these days, certainly not dress pants for a law office.
I was able to find Rock Revival jeans at Nordstrom's in San Francisco, well ordered there and they were shipped to me. They look nice and even though I had to pay shipping and duty, they are worth it to me.
Remember something is only worth what someone will pay for it.
The service I got at Nordstrom's from the men's wear dept including him ordering the jeans for me was worth the extra 90 above normal price I paid (shipping and duty). I will pay more to get better service.
To each his own.

It isn't the same, they are usually cheaper versions of the stuff you get in the big stores. Anyway, as I get older and have more, I can't be bothered going through racks and sorting through stuff thrown around by others. I prefer when a store remains clean, tidy and the staff actually acts like they want your business.
