I came across this question and decided to make it a thread here. (maybe I shall make other threads with other questions too)

What is the worst design ever?

I haven't completely thought about this to give an absolute answer for myself, but to start I will say Plastic Clamshell Packaging. Whoever designed it should be scheduled for a public hanging.

If you've ever opened up a CFL light bulb, you know what this is.

Speed bumps. If I ever meet the jerk who approves them for any street I'm going to go to jail. This city has potholes that can swallow cars and we're putting perfectly good asphalt on top of the streets to makes more bumps.

That's right up there with the old cassette packaging that was a shoplifting deterrent. It was as long as your forearm with all this hard plastic and a handle on the end.

I can't find a picture, but some of you that are my age may remember it.

I want speed bumps on my street. I've got kids to worry about. If I could legally do it, I would shoot ever mfer that sped down my street.

His name is William L Morris. :laugh2:

Theft resistant cassette holder: United States Patent: 4,567,983 - February 4, 1986 by William L Morris of Troy MI. (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect2=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=PALL&RefSrch=yes&Query=PN/4567983)

The clamshell packaging actually has several inventors based on shape and stuff. Hang them all.

As product designs go, some multi-tasking convenience options shouldn't be offered ... ever.

Pretty much.

On a side note, did you notice those 'green technology' lights come in plastic/petroleum packaging, while the old fashioned lights come in recycled paper?

Batteries...

If I need two, I have to buy three. If I need three I have to buy four.

You cannot mix one brand with another. So, I'm left with random batteries...I buy one brand for a flashlight and have one left over. The wife buys another brand for something else, and one left over!

I strongly agree on the clamshell packaging, so frustrating. It takes forever to open and is risky on whether you will cut yourself on accident trying to open it.

American road engineering in general. Shoddy foundation = potholes and cracked roads.

We should re-build all our roadways the way the Germans do it.

These are just good examples of man's ability to ruin anything. I really can't blame these people that pack up and move their families away civilization.

Taxes, government, and war are necessities of civilization. The streets you drive on, the police force, the prisons that take bad people off the street were all paid for with taxes. Think about how not paying taxes would change your life. The ability to make war protects you from others outside of your own civilization who would take your things and possibly put you to death just to get rid of you. The government is who builds those roads and builds the police and military forces that protect you, your family, and your property.

As for the other one you listed. I suppose it helps some people be better people. Others use it as a means of control and power. (this applies to government also) Religion is in no way a necessity the way the other three are.

To me, the worst design ever is the miniature shopping carts that they have at our grocery stores. There is a special place in hell for the inventor of those.

They are cute the first time your kid has one, but then you realize they hold too little stuff, terrorize your heels, and seem to aim themselves automatically the glass bottles throughout the store. Also, it really inhales excessively when there are no more left for your kid and you seem to pass somebody else's kid pushing one of those things every 10 seconds. Or, god forbid, some other kid launches one of these shin missiles in your general direction for the hell of it.

TL;DR Miniature shopping carts are a dangerous drug for any toddler and shouldn't even be in the stores.
