Roll on Tuesday, so sick of this getting rammed down my throat 24/7. Can't put the tele or radio on or pick up a paper without hearing about it. Street parties, union flag bunting on the streets, parades. Not a fan!

Daschoo -- how do you feel about that scene in Trainspotting where they talk about how you Scots are colonized by wankers?
Does that cut too close right now?

Yes and yes.
To be fair I'm not accusing English folk of being wankers but I definitely don't see any reason for us to be ruled by them. Can't really say much more without going into politics.
As an aside I can't get my head round why Americans have so much time for the British royal family, after gaining your independence and forming a republic I'd have thought you would be against the principle.

Principle has nothing to do with it. You're talking about the same folks, us Americans, who follow closely the likes of the Kardashians, "Snookie", and all the other mindless trash out there now? The word "voyeuristic" comes to mind.
......And by the way, they are still the mother country, and probably the only true ally this country still has.

Presume you will be going to work on Monday & Tuesday then, wouldn't want to take advantage of the extra day off to celebrate the jubilee now would you ;)
I'm not a royalist by any stretch of the imagination, but to be fair to Queenie, 60 years on the throne is a big deal, only second time in history that it has happened
PS And FWIW, I would say that most of England would prefer Scotland to be separate too

It doesn't finish on Monday?
60 years of waving at people and jetting around the globe meeting her subjects, its a tough gig.
Hopefully we'll both be happy in 2014 then, main hiccup is going to be scaremongering from westminster as no PM is going to want the breaking up of the union as his legacy.
I should probably make the most of this weekend because a few years down the line for the funeral is going to be 10 times worse.
I don't actually have anything against her or her family as individuals, some of them seem like positively decent people its just the whole idea of the monarchy that irritates me.
ps yes I'm working Monday, Tuesday and was in this afternoon

I am sure Canada will provide us with all the maple syrup we can use during war.

They just conquered you because the Scots back then were weak (and economically you still cannot make it a go on your own). My grandparents all came from Scotland (Glasgow/Paisley and Dundee) because of how bad it was there economically. It isn't that much better now.
Scotland is beautiful, loved the Highlands when I was there 6 years ago, but you are better off in Britain than not.

Firstly we were not conquered by England, both countries invaded each other for years (mostly them invading us - The Scottish Wars of Independence) before a political union was formed in 1707. Also worth pointing out that in 1603 it was the King of Scotland who inherited the English throne so again they did not conquer us.
The only argument you could make for us having been conquered is the widely held belief that the Scottish signataries were bribed to pass the Act of Union.

As for us not being able to economically stand on our own two feet I don't want to get into that as it would be a political discussion which isn't allowed here, suffice to say I disagree and am not really sure why Scotland is the only small country that needs its bigger neighbour to survive.
From the way I've heard you talking about your kids on here before I'm guessing it's probably approaching a century since your grandparents emigrated. It may surprise you to know that things are somewhat different. I grew up in Glasgow and lived there the first 28 years of my life, believe it or not I wasn't dragged up in squalour but it is comforting to know that you worry about the plight of me and mine. Can't speak much for Dundee or Paisley as I've never spent enough time in either to really comment but to say Glasgow is poverty stricken is just ignorant. Multi million pound regenration on the riverfront, multi million pound new museums, 3 sporting arenas with capacities of over 50,000, Buchanan street is the 3rd most expensive street in Europe in terms of retail rents, 2 airports, talk of a high speed rail link to London, thousands of new luxury flats and apartments going up each year, the most exclusive shopping in Britland outside of London - at the Italian Centre, and a fantastic restaurant and nightlife scene. Yes there are areas of Glasgow with social problems and poverty but show me a major world city where that isn't the case.
Your last point yes it is a beautiful country but we'll agree to disagree with how you finished.

Seven and a half miles of boats would have been an impressive sight right enough - shame they never got a nicer day for it, I personally went for a drive in the country in the morning (nice and sunny up here) then watched the French Open in work in the afternoon.
Say a belter on twitter earlier "diamond jubilee, london olympics, chelsea win champions league. all set up for germany to win the euros"

Sounds like you had a good day. I'd have loved to have spent the weekend in the West Highlands or Skye. It's a shame it can take me two days to get there.

Apparantly unemployed folk were bussed in as security and made to sleep under bridges for the river thing. Shocking if true
