What The Cowboys Said They Would Do In Free Agency And The Draft - And What They Ended Up Doing

Heading into the offseason this year, it wasn't exactly a secret that the Cowboys needed help in the secondary. And the Cowboys weren't shy about confirming it. At the Senior Bowl end January, the Austin Chronicle' s Alex Dunlap quoted Rob Ryan, who briefly outlined his focus:

"I’m only looking at DBs. Nothing else. DBs."

For a team to be this open about its strategy is a little unusual. Unless it was all part of a carefully constructed strategy of subterfuge, obfuscation and skulduggery of course. In Rob Ryan's case, it obviously wasn't, as he got himself lots of shiny new toys in the secondary with two draft picks and two free agent pickups.

That leaves Jerry Jones, who also addressed the press during the Senior Bowl, where he was remarkably clear about the direction the Cowboys were going to take from a personnel point of view. More chicanery and duplicity from the owner himself?...

I dont know why people are ever surprised when Jerry is honest. He doesn't shy away from letting the media know what is going on with the team. Another way to get the team attention.

The whole world knew that we had to have help in the secondary. Saying something different would not have fooled anyone.

What did surprise a lot of us was that there was not more money spent on O-line or a #3 WR.

Considering they are close to the cap, why would they spend big? They need to leave themselves a little wiggle room.

If you listen Jerry will tell you most everything.

True, and not avoiding any of the tough questions along the line...:)

I have full confidence when it comes to manipulating the cap that they could have found the money if they had wanted to. Stephen is top notch.

In order to do that dance, they need a partner. Who's contract are they restructuring that they didn't already?

This team is in limbo... they are not going to extend a players contract that they aren't sure about (whether they are right or wrong). Spencers situation is a prime example of that. The team will either progress this year or they will start a fairly large turnover.

It would just be stupid to listen to Jerrah before the Draft he never says anything relevant, it's all a smoke screen!:laugh2:

I keep hearing these WR3 comments when we have about 5-6 young guys who have not even had a training camp yet.
Furthermore, when was the last time a team with two young and productive starting WRs and a Pro Bowl TE ever gone out and spent money on a Wr3?
I'm not sure I can recall it ever happening, but I could be wrong.
