That Earth-destroying asteroid was successfully veered off course on Friday, when the New Orleans Saints agreed to a five-year contract with quarterback Drew Brees.

And without squinting too much, it's easy to see some local implications. The Cowboys' own franchise quarterback, Tony Romo, has two years left on his contract, which is set to balloon dramatically in 2013, reason to believe the club could seek to extend Romo in the relatively near future.

With some extra cap money in place for 2012 - and considering they will still have a $5 million cap penalty for 2013 - it would make sense for the Cowboys to attempt to get Romo's financial situation in line before too long.

If Brees, who is only about nine months older than Romo, can average $20 million per year through his age 37 season, what sort of cash can Romo expect to make on his next contract, barring a serious injury or sudden wobble in his production?

Next year would possibly be a good revisit on contract situations involving Tony Romo. I think we should be proud with the rise of this franchise deserving QB now.

Tony Romo has already demonstrated more negotiable contract flexibility, during his time as a Dallas Cowboy, than Drew Brees has as a San Diego Charger or New Orleans Saint. There may be some future handwringing between the club and him to create a contract which best serves both parties, but I sincerely doubt that the same exaggerated melodrama will play out here.

I would expect Romo will get paid the avg of the top 10 QB's in the league. Currently he is the 7th highest paid QB in the league. Brees deal ups the ante for all the QB's

Romo is great and deserves and extension, but rarely do you want a QB retiring on his last contract. It usually gets pretty damn awkward towards the end.

What it means is that the Cowboys front office will have more cover for making the disastrous decision to extend Romo's contract.

If Romo doesn't win the Super Bowl by the end of this contract, he would have to be the oldest quarterback other than John Elway to win his first Super Bowl.

Basically, unless you're a brilliant quarterback who has won one before, 34 is the age limit for Super Bowl champion quarterbacks.

Wrong! It means as it does for every other QB moving forward, they just got richer.

While Romo does not have the stats that Bree's has, he is a top tier QB in the leage and is currently the 7th highest paid QB. When his deal expiress in 2 seasons, Romo will either hit the open market, be franchised by the team, or sign a new contract with the team.

Bree's contract will very much have an affect on this situation if for no other reason than in raises the average of the top 5 QBs if Romo has to be franchised. In laymans terms, Brees just made all the top tier QBs richer on their next deals.
